Sunday: Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion Jn 12:12-16 Casting a Net Is 50:4-7 Ps 22:8-9,17-20, 23-24 ear brothers and sisters in Christ, Phil 2:6-11 Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion begins the holiest of all weeks in our church’s Mk 14:1—15:47 D liturgical calendar. This holy week will remind and make us relive days of pain, anguish, as well as days of surprise and joy. This week's services are more than a visual repetition of the Monday: passion, death and resurrection of our Lord. Holy Week invites the total participation of our Is 42:1-7 whole being and senses, in uniting ourselves with Christ in his permanent offering to God, the Ps 27:1-3,13-14 Jn 12:1-11 Father. As your pastor, I am aware that many in this world are going through their particular challenging Tuesday: pilgrimage through their Good Friday to Holy Saturday. I am cognizant of the reality in our Is 49:1-6 community and to the problems that many parishioners are facing: the financial problems in the Ps 71:1-4a,5-6b, home, the battle with the vices of drugs, pornography, and alcohol, that not only affect 15-17 individuals but families, the fear of deportation and separation from families, the pain of Jn 13:21-33,36-38 transition to a new way of life for our refugee parishioners, the courageous battle that some of Wednesday: you are having against a deadly illness, the hurt in seeing children straying from their faith, and Is 50:4-9a the grieving process that many are undergoing following the death of a love one this past year of Ps 69:8-10,21-22, pandemic. Some of us are in the transitional space of Holy Saturday, waiting with anguish for good news in our lives. 31,33-34 Mt 26:14-25 The readings this week will remind us of the importance of faith—a faith that holds us firm in difficult times. Sacred scripture and church tradition highlight to us a God who prepares and Holy Thursday: accompanies us during our trials and challenges in life. In response we join our life to Christ’s Ex 12:1-8,11-14 passion, death and resurrection confident that God makes all things new. This assurance also Ps 116:12-13,15- requires that we confront reality, that we do not run from reality or pretend that everything is 16c,17-18 going well around us. To face reality with faith is to cling to God in prayer and to unite ourselves 1 Cor 11:23-26 with Christ on a deeper level and seek help from God’s people, the Church. Jn 13:1-15 The passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ makes visible the love of the Father and Good Friday: teaches us that the best response to that love is not only gratitude, but conversion. The most Is 52:13—53:12 appropriate response to the saving actions of God is the total transformation of our life, realizing Ps 31:2,12-13,15- that we are sinners redeemed by Christ. When we confront the effects of sin, individual and 17,25 communal, we make a huge step in embracing fully the salvation that Christ gives us. At every Heb 4:14-16;5:7-9 Mass we make this present when we give worship to a God who loves us, who makes everything Jn 18:1—19:42 new, and reminds us that every Good Friday has an Easter Sunday. Holy Saturday: I invite you to participate in the liturgies of the Holy Week especially the Paschal Triduum, which Easter Vigil begins on Holy Thursday with the evening Mass of the Lord's Last Supper until the evening of Readings Easter Sunday. The Paschal Triduum is the most sacred time of the Church. We will be live- streaming most of the liturgies, so you can join us that way if you are Easter Sunday: unable to be present with us at the Cathedral. Please note that we have The Resurrection added an 8am Mass on Easter Sunday to accommodate as many returning of the Lord parishioners to celebrate Easter Sunday with a hope-filled joy in Acts 10:34a,37-43 thanksgiving to God for the gift of salvation. • Easter ORIGIN of EASTER: WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
Easter ORIGIN OF EASTER: WHERE DID IT COME FROM? The exact origins of this religious feast day’s name are unknown. Some sources claim the word Easter is derived the Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Other accounts trace Easter to the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time. Through a translation error, the term later appeared as esostarum in Old High German, which eventually became Easter in English. In Spanish, Easter is known as Pascua; in French, Paques. These words are derived from the Greek and Latin Pascha or Pasch, for Passover. Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection occurred after he went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover (or Pesach in Hebrew), the Jewish festival commemorating the ancient Israelites’ exodus from slavery in Egypt. Pascha eventually came to mean Easter. In the Christian Religion Easter is also called Resurrection Sunday. It is a festival celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, It is a movable feast. Gregorian Calendar has 5th April, Julian Calendar 12th April and Jewish Passover 4th April, for this year. Customs vary across the Christian World. Easter is preceded by Lent. A period of fasting and penitence for Easter, which begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts forty days (not counting Sundays) The week before Easter is Holy week, The Sunday before Easter is Palm Sunday, the last three days are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday commemorate Jesus entering into Jerusalem. Ash Wednesday a day of fasting, the first day of Lent. Jesus Christ spent 40 days fasting in the dessert.

  • Pastoral Letter for Easter Monday We Are Now Through Holy Week
Pastoral Letter For Easter Monday We are now through Holy Week, which began on Palm Sunday and continued through Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Easter Sunday was yesterday, and hopefully, you were able to either view the service on our website or, at least, read the written copy of the sermon for the day. It has been a surreal experience following the directions of the Stay at Home Order and visiting grocery stores with bare shelves. The news is obsessed with the death toll from the coronavirus outbreak and the economic fallout. Fortunately, we do encounter occasional acts of compassion that warm the heart. One such episode happened a few years ago, but I thought that you might appreciate the message that it contains. A young lad who was paying his way through school by selling goods door to door found himself one day virtually penniless. Hungry and exhausted, he decided to ask for a meal at the next place he visited. When a young lass opened her door, the boy lost his nerve and simply asked for a drink of water. Seeing that he looked emaciated, she gave him a large glass of milk, which he gratefully drank down. He then asked her how much he owed her. She responded that he didn’t owe her anything – that she never would expect payment for a kindness. He thanked her profusely. As Chris Galen departed, his faith in God and humankind was strengthened. He was on the verge of giving up, but that young woman saved the day. Years later, that woman became critically ill.

  • Liturgical Guidelines for Holy Week 2021 Diocese of Madison | Most Reverend Donald Hying, Bishop
Liturgical Guidelines for Holy Week 2021 Diocese of Madison | Most Reverend Donald Hying, Bishop The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread through communities all over the world. While the spread of the virus seems to be slowing, we still must be vigilant. We are not aware of any “super spreader” events ignited by the prayer and worship of the Church, which gives testimony to the diligent safety precautions that parishes have been observing, With that in mind, the Vatican’s Congregation for Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments declared that we should use many of the guidelines from 2020. The following guidelines are to be observed in 2021 in the Diocese of Madison. They are drawn from a recent Vatican document, Note to Bishops and Episcopal Conferences on the Celebration of Holy Week 2021 (February 17, 2021). Access to pertinent Vatican Document is available from our Diocesan website: https://www.madisondiocese.org/holy-week Palm Sunday Parishes should use the Third Form of the Entrance Rite (The Simple Entrance). In the Diocese of Madison parishes may opt to use a “hybrid” method using some of the elements of the Second Form but omitting a large procession. Most parishioners remain in their pews while a few may be in the procession. Social distancing should be followed. For the Distribution of Palms: o Ushers or Greeters place palms in each pew before Mass. o Avoid an area (like a table in the back of church) where all come closely together to select their own palm. Chrism Mass Tuesday of Holy Week (March 30) at 7:00 p.m.
