Resentment diminishes and devours the self. Be the first to forgive, to smile and to take the first step and you will see happiness bloom on the face of your human brother or sister. Be always the first, do not wait for others to forgive. For by forgiving, you become the master of fate, the fashioner of life, a doer of miracles. To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return you will receive untold peace and happiness. And here is the program for achieving a truly forgiving heart: Sunday: Forgive yourself. Monday: Forgive your family. Tuesday: Forgive your friends and associates. Wednesday: Forgive across economic lines within your own nation. Thursday: Forgive across cultural lines within your own nation. Friday: Forgive across political lines within your own nation. Saturday: Forgive other nations. Only the brave knows how to forgive. A coward never forgives. It is not in his nature. Help Jesus in Disguise Catholic Relief Services Collection March 13 & 14 Next week, March 13 & 14, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection. Funds from this Collection provide food to the hungry, support displaced refugees, and bring Christ’s love and mercy to vulnerable people here and abroad. Next week, please give generously to the collection and help Jesus in disguise. Saint Joseph’s Feast Day Mass and Altar Each year, the tradition continues of honoring Saint Joseph for his blessings on the people of Sicily, Italy. According to most sources, Saint Joseph’s Altar started in the Middle Ages during a long drought and famine. People dying of starvation appealed to Christ’s paternal provider for help. They asked Saint Joseph for relief from the terrible famine that gripped the island. Finally, the skies opened sending down the life-giving water. The people rejoiced in celebration and to express their gratitude, they prepared a table with a special assortment of foods they had harvested. After paying homage to Saint Joseph, they distributed the food to the less fortunate. Saint Peter’s will dedicate a Saint Joseph’s Altar on Friday, March 19. We will start the day on Friday morning with the 9:00 AM Solemnity Mass of Saint Joseph. The Altar this year will be a little different due to COVID 19. We will have blessed bread available for you to use in time of storms, (a basket will be available for a donation to help the less fortunate) a fava bean, Saint Joseph’s Prayer Card and a slice of homemade cake and water to take with you. All Parishioners, family and friends are invited to attend the blessing of this altar. For more information call Mary Ann Lorino at 205-907-1299. Due to the Solemnity falling on a Friday of Lent, a dispensation is granted for that Friday from the obligation to abstain from meat. • Lent & Easter Season
LENT/EASTER SEASON February 22, 2015 WHAT’S THIS? At its root, Lent is a name for Spring, and is a 40-day period of preparation for Easter Sunday and one of the major liturgical seasons of the Catholic Church. A penitential season marked by prayer, fasting and abstinence, and almsgiving, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The color of Lent is purple; The six Sundays in Lent are not part of the Lenten fast, and thus we say there are 40 days of Lent – a biblical number – while there are really 46; The Stations of the Cross are a devotion imitating a pilgrimage with Jesus to commemorate 14 key events around the crucifixion; Because of the solemnity of Lent, the Gloria and Alleluia are not said or sung. March 1, 2015 WHAT’S THIS? During Lent the Church is called to embrace a spirit of repentance and metanoia (“a change of heart”) or conversion. There are many opportunities for prayer – communally or individually – such as: Daily Mass (communal) Stations of the Cross (communal and individual) The Rosary (communal and individual) Liturgy of the Hours (individual) Reconciliation (communal and individual) Adoration of the Eucharist in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel every Friday (individual) Free web Lent program offered by Dynamic Catholic—sign up at BestLentEver.com. March 8, 2015 WHAT’S THIS? The next four weeks of “What’s This” will be highlighting specific components that lead up through the Easter Vigil. Palm Sunday – March 29: The liturgical color of Palm Sunday is red. Red signifies Christ’s Passion; The Palm Sunday liturgy begins with an additional Gospel highlighting the jubilant entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem; The palms are ancient symbols of victory and hope, as well as new life; The Palm Sunday liturgy takes on a more somber tone with the second Gospel reading of Christ’s Passion; The blessed palms received this day should be discarded as other blessed articles.

  • Easter ORIGIN of EASTER: WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
Easter ORIGIN OF EASTER: WHERE DID IT COME FROM? The exact origins of this religious feast day’s name are unknown. Some sources claim the word Easter is derived the Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Other accounts trace Easter to the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time. Through a translation error, the term later appeared as esostarum in Old High German, which eventually became Easter in English. In Spanish, Easter is known as Pascua; in French, Paques. These words are derived from the Greek and Latin Pascha or Pasch, for Passover. Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection occurred after he went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover (or Pesach in Hebrew), the Jewish festival commemorating the ancient Israelites’ exodus from slavery in Egypt. Pascha eventually came to mean Easter. In the Christian Religion Easter is also called Resurrection Sunday. It is a festival celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, It is a movable feast. Gregorian Calendar has 5th April, Julian Calendar 12th April and Jewish Passover 4th April, for this year. Customs vary across the Christian World. Easter is preceded by Lent. A period of fasting and penitence for Easter, which begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts forty days (not counting Sundays) The week before Easter is Holy week, The Sunday before Easter is Palm Sunday, the last three days are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday commemorate Jesus entering into Jerusalem. Ash Wednesday a day of fasting, the first day of Lent. Jesus Christ spent 40 days fasting in the dessert.

  • Good Friday: Liturgy of the Lord’S Passion
Good Friday: Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion Good Friday: Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion Notes As the second part of the Triduum – the great three-day celebration of the institution of the Eucharist, the Passion, and the Resurrection – the Good Friday Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion is a continuation of the Maundy Thursday liturgy and hence begins in the silence with which that rite ended. By tradition, the altar is completely bare until covered by a clean cloth of white linen at the Holy Communion. Since at least the fifteenth century, Jesus’ Seven Last Words from the Cross, drawn from the gospel texts, have been central to preaching on this day, and for much of the twentieth century formed the basis of a three-hour devotion, from noon to 3 pm (the hours Jesus was on the cross), with addresses interspersed with hymns and periods of silence. This custom has proved of enduring value across the Christian denominations, but is difficult to incorporate into a liturgical Office such as that provided here. The customary fourteen Stations of the Cross is an extra- liturgical devotion, which may be observed in various ways, and at all times of the year; it is an appropriate form of devotion throughout Lent, and on Fridays through the year. The Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion This rite consists of three discrete parts. (i) The Liturgy of the Word should always be used, with either the Solemn Intercessions provided or other appropriate intercessory prayers which reflect the solemnity and significance of the day.
