Dear Parishioners,

This Friday, March 19, is the Solemnity of St. marriage. And so, as the crowining part of His Joseph, which takes upon itself special significance in creation, God creates the first human family. So God this Year of Saint Joseph, especially for our parish created man in his own image, in the image of God dedicated to the Just Man of Nazareth. As will the he created him; male and female he created them. Church throughout the world, we will set aside the And God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be somber violet vestments as with joy we celebrate the fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it Patron of the Universal Church (Bl. In January, I quoted from Pope Francis’ Humanity may change what it has itself created, even Apostolic Letter, Patris corde – “With the Heart of a if that change is a mistake. But humanity may not Father” – noting Joseph’s humble, obedient, change what God has created, even if it seems like a courageous role in the Divine plan of salvation, as good idea. God has created marriage to be between well as the patron of working men and of fathers. one man and one woman; and He has created the Our own Bp. John O. Barres published a norm for the family to be that of a husband and wife, pastoral letter addressed to the faithful of our diocese, who then become a father and mother, with their Go to Joseph! That traditional invocation is children. Even though our modern families may inscribed over the main doors of our church, certainly infrequently look like this, that does not change that appropriate for an edifice and a parish dedicated to this is the norm, and that this is what God desires. St. Joseph. Therefore, this is what all families, with God’s help, Bp. Barres’ letter offered many worthwhile should strive to attain. One of the main reasons for points for reflection, paralleling, as would be the breakdown in the life of the family over these last expected, Pope Francis’. One section that I would few decades is that men and women have denied the like to share is his consideration of Joseph as husband truth that marriage and the family have been created and father: by God expressly for us. This is a foundational part St. Joseph and the Family of God’s plan for us. God chose to come to us “Even though there was not very much detail through the human family, and He desires that we to draw from, the Evangelists made sure that we come back to him in the same way.” knew the name of the man chosen by God for this This Year of Saint Joseph is an appropriate enormous task, to care for the Lord’s two greatest time for us to look again at our homes and our possessions on earth: His Divine Son; and His families with renewed appreciation of their essential Immaculate Mother. St. Joseph was chosen by God holiness. The family is, as St. Paul VI said, “the for this unique purpose, and so he became the spouse Domestic Church” – the first place where we of the Blessed Virgin and the earthly father of the Son encounter God’s presence in our lives, where we of God. But our elderly, who even in infirmity and illness have when He came, Christ chose to come to earth through much to teach us about faith and quiet perseverance, the human family. As Catholics, we do not believe who offer us the opportunity to return to them the that the family is merely an accidental byproduct of love and care we received from them in our early anthropology, as if human beings created the family years. Husbands and wives show us the enduring because it was convenient, or practical, or was suited power of love in their commitment, in their promise to the culture in which they happened to live.
