2017 Colorado Rare Plant Symposia USFS Sensitive Species of Colorado Forest Service Status Species 2017 Colorado Rare Plant Symposia USFS Sensitive Species of Colorado Forest Service Status Species • National Forest Management Act (NFMA) – law that directs the management of NFS lands – NFMA is implemented in each National Forest’s or National Grassland’s Land Management Plan (LMP) • The way we do Land Management Plans has changed, status species lists will change accordingly – NFS units that have revised their LMP will have Species of Conservation Concern – Those that have not will retain Sensitive Species until they revise • Species protected under the Endangered Species Act are different Sensitive Species • What they are: Species with evidence of a current or predicted downward trend • Threshold for management: No decision can be made that will put a Sensitive species on a trend towards listing as Threatened or Endangered or would lead to the loss of viability on the planning unit (the area that the LMP covers) • Will continue to be updated until LMP is revised Species of Conservation Concern (SCC) • What they are: substantial concern about the species’ ability to persist over the long term in the plan area • Threshold for management: Effects of a proposed project can not result in ecological conditions that will not support SCC persistence within the plan area • Can be updated at any time after LMP revision Species of Conservation Concern • Management Focus: Creating or maintaining ecological conditions that promote recovery, conservation, and viability. These conditions are spelled out in the revised Land Management Plan. • Only NFS units that have revised their plans under the 2012 Rule will transition to SCC – Rio Grande NF – about halfway through process – Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison NFs – just starting – The rest of the NFS units in Colorado are TBD and will keep Sensitive Species until they revise, sensitive list will continue to be updated Sensitive vs. SCC • Focus is on threats • Focus is on ecological conditions (EC) • Have fairly general plan • Have species- or ecosystem–specific components plan components, specific to the unit • Threshold is trend to listing or • Threshold is EC that won’t support loss of viability on unit persistence • Management tends to be hands • Management focuses on ecosystems off • Each unit has Abstract Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands occupy 230,000 acres of public land extending from northeastern New Mexico into the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. A mosaic of topographic features including canyons, plateaus, rolling grasslands and outcrops supports a diverse flora. Eight hundred twenty six (826) species of vascular plant species representing 81 plant families are known to occur on or near these public lands. This report includes a history of the area; ethnobotanical information; an introductory overview of the area including its climate, geology, vegetation, habitats, fauna, and ecological history; and a plant survey and information about the rare, poisonous, and exotic species from the area. A vascular plant checklist of 816 vascular plant taxa in the appendix includes scientific and common names, habitat types, and general distribution data for each species. This list is based on extensive plant collections and available herbarium collections. Authors Donald L. University Avenue University of Wyoming Laramie, WY 21 February 2012 Cooperative Agreement No. 07-CS-11040300-019 ABSTRACT Three sensitive and two other Wyoming species of concern were inventoried in the Wyoming and Salt River Ranges at over 20 locations. The results provided a significant set of trend data for Payson’s milkvetch (Astragalus paysonii), expanded the known distribution of Robbin’s milkvetch (Astragalus robbinsii var. minor), and relocated and expanded the local distributions of three calciphilic species at select sites as a springboard for expanded surveys. Results to date are presented with the rest of species’ information for sensitive species program reference. This report is submitted as an interim report representing the format of a final report. Tentative priorities for 2012 work include new Payson’s milkvetch surveys in major recent wildfires, and expanded Rockcress draba (Draba globosa) surveys, both intended to fill key gaps in status information that contribute to maintenance of sensitive plant resources and information on the Forest. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS All 2011 field surveys of Payson’s milkvetch (Astragalus paysonii) were conducted by Klara Varga.     The intergenic spacer region of the rDNA in Haplopappus gracilis (Nutt.) Gray M. Ruffini Castiglione1, M. T. Gelati2 R. Cremonini1, M. Frediani2* Abstract In this paper, we provide further information on the genome organisation of Haplopappus gracilis, one of the six angiosperms showing the lowest chromosome number, i.e. 2n=4, by determining the nucleotide sequence of the intergenic spacer region of the ribosomal RNA genes and its cytological localization on metaphase chromosomes. DNA sequence analysis reveals the occurring of a product of 4,382 bp in length, characterised by the presence of four blocks of different repeated sequences. Our analysis also evidenced putative promoter regions with three transcription initiation sites for polymerase I, as previously reported in Artemisia absinthium, belonging to the same Asteraceae family. A fluorescent in situ hybridization with the intergenic spacer probe indicates the presence of rDNA genes only in the satellited chromosomes of H. gracilis; besides, differences in the signal intensity between homologous chromosomes were frequently observed, thus suggesting for these chromosome sites the presence of a variable number of rDNA gene copies, even if a divergent chromatin organisation in corresponding regions cannot be ruled out.
