Young Department of Entomology 445 Russell Labs University of Wisconsin-Madison Madison, WI 53706 Abstract: A survey of Wisconsin Nitidulidae and Kateretidae yielded 78 species through analysis of literature records, museum and private collections, and three years of field research (2000-2002). Twenty-seven species (35% of the Wisconsin fauna) represent new state records, having never been previously recorded from the state. Wisconsin distribution, along with relevant collecting techniques and natural history information, are summarized. The Wisconsin nitidulid and kateretid faunae are compared to reconstructed and updated faunal lists for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and south-central Canada. -

CLINE (Louisiana State Arthropod Museum, Department of Entomology, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 10803, USA; email: [email protected]) The adventive sap beetles present in Hawai`i are all saprophagous, except for Cybocephalus nipponicus Endrödy-Younga, which is predatory. Species in the genus Carpophilus are the most commonly encountered and are considered nuisance pests around pineapple fields and canneries (Illingworth, 1929; Schmidt, 1935; Hinton, 1945). The remaining species are less frequently encountered and are not considered to be impor- tant pests. We report 2 new state records, 5 new island records, and 4 taxonomic changes for the adventive sap beetles in Hawai`i. With the exception of Stelidota chontalensis Sharp, all of the species reported are widely distributed outside Hawai`i. -

Subfamily Carpophilinae is represented in Egypt by nine species within two genera Carpophilus (eight species) and Urophorus (one species). The study starts by reviewing the main Egyptian insect collections for target species. To recognizing and facilitate the identification of the member of this subfamily, a taxonomic key to the genera and species is presented together with diagnostic characters of the family and the subfamily. The key based the morphological characters of adults obtained from the preserved materials as well as collected specimens. Habitus figures is also provided for each species. They are used with the bait of fermenting liquids (beer, wine) with the addition of sugar and other carbohydrates. The research was conducted in 2018-2020 in several regions of Russia. It was possible to identify 294 species from 45 Coleoptera families during this time. Simple traps have been shown to be highly effective and can be used to study insect biodi- versity in forest ecosystems. Abstract: The possibilities of applying various methods to study Coleoptera give unexpected and original results. The studies were carried out with the help of fermental crown traps in 2018-2020 on the territory of eight regions in the central part of European Russia. The biodiversity of Cole- optera that fall into crown traps includes 294 species from 45 families. The number of species at- tracted to the fermenting bait is about a third of the total number of species in the traps (this is 97.4% of the number of all caught specimens). -

Patterns and drivers of terrestrial arthropod biodiversity in northern Canada Crystal M. Ernst 2015 Abstract The overarching goal of this thesis was to describe patterns of terrestrial arthropod biodiversity and community structure in northern Canada, and to explore the underlying drivers and mechanisms that are responsible for these patterns. The term “biodiversity” is used here in a broad sense that includes both taxonomic (TD) and functional (FD) diversity. Ground-dwelling arthropods, especially beetles (Coleoptera), were used as model taxa, and were collected using standardized methods from twelve locations in the three northernmost ecoclimatic zones of Canada. Beetle biodiversity changes over time and space. Over the course of one active season, rapid species and functional turnover were observed in two major habitats in one subarctic location (Kugluktuk, Nunavut). While some functional groups were apparent only for brief periods of time, entomophagous predators consistently dominated the assemblage structure in biomass and abundance. This dominance by carnivores was observed consistently throughout the study, regardless of spatial or taxonomic scope. This inverted trophic structure suggests that predators may rely on alternative, non-epigeic prey items. A natural history study of previously unknown host-parasite interactions between beetles and nematomorphs (Gordionus n. sp.) suggests that beetles use alate insects with aquatic larval stages as an important nutrient subsidy. Across the entire study region, beetle TD and FD, as well as overall assemblage structure, display strong negative relationships with latitude, which conforms to the classical latitudinal gradient of diversity. -

Fennica 15: 53–61. Coniferous and deciduous logging residue (“slash”) was collected from six 1- year old and six 4-year old clear-cuts in South-West Sweden during the spring of 2002. In the laboratory, insects were emerged under standardised conditions. In- sects emerged in 41% of the rearing-tubes with 1-year old slash. In 4-year old slash, 54% of the tubes contained insects. The most successfully emerged order was Coleoptera, represented by 10 families, 22 species and 425 individuals. The second most abundant order was Hymenoptera. The most abundant Coleoptera family was Curculionidae that comprised 48% of all the beetles. Four distinct species groups among Coleoptera were found, each group being separated by slash age and tree category (deciduous/coniferous). Significantly more species were found in the 4-year old deciduous slash, compared to the 1-year old. In co- niferous slash, there was a tendency for more species in the 1-year old slash than in the 4-year old. The results suggest that slash is valuable as breeding substrate and/or food supply to the beetle fauna on clear-cuts. K. Nittérus* & B.
