    Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies.

Agricultural College Tirupati-517502 ABSTRACT Soil fertility parameters viz., pH, electrical conductivity (EC), available macronutrients and micronutrients were determined in one hundred and fifty seven soil samples in Agricultural college farm, Mahanandi. Based on the data maps were prepared in GIS environment using ArcGIS 9.3.1. Soils are neutral to moderately alkaline (7.00 to 8.10) in reaction, and non-saline. The organic carbon content was low to high (0.02 to 0.77 %). In the study area the available nitrogen content was low to medium (50.18 to 388.86 kg ha-1) while available phosphorus was low to high (2.23 to 62.37 kg P2O5 ha-1) and the available potassium content was high (361.20 to 1117.54 kg ha-1). The availability of sulphur and the micronutrients Zn, Cu and Fe are in deficient to sufficient range while manganese is in sufficient range. Based on the overall assessment, the nutrient status in these soils was optimum. Over the last three decades extensive marine geophysical data (bathymetry, magnetic, gravity and multi-channel seismic reflection) was collected over the ECMI. These data sets were analyzed to understand the structure, tectonics and the geodynamic evolution of this passive margin. This paper presents the synthesis of the results obtained from marine geophysical studies spanning over a period of nearly two decades, mainly related to the geomorphology, tectonics, coastal seismicity, Holocene sea level history and marine geohazards of the margin. The geodynamic evolution of this passive margin is explained based on the major tectonic lineaments like Continent-Ocean Boundary (COB), the NE-SW horst and graben trend of the continental basement and the rift related dyke intrusions within the continental basement. Land – Ocean Tectonic lineaments (LOTs) identified from the data reveal neotectonic activity associated at the three locations over the ECMI. Holocene sea level history has been traced from the high resolution seismic reflection data. Marine geohazards over the basinal and non basinal areas of ECMI have been demarcated.

Venkata Raju E mail : [email protected] Issued 02 November 2008 ABSTRACT The present report deals with the phytotherapeutic properties of certain potential anti-poisonous crude drugs used by the Adivasis, inhabited in the forests of Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. The critical taxonomic analysis yielded twenty species belonging to 17 families of angiosperms used for poisonous bites. The majority of drug formulations (14 spp.) were administered as antidotes for snake bites. Key words: Crude drugs, Poisonous bites, Rayalaseema region. INTRODUCTION Since time immorial plants play an important role in the spiritual as well as physical well being of the mankind. The indigenous people depend either directly or indirectly on the forests for their daily needs and preserve the knowledge about the traditional and cultural uses of plants as family secrets. It is necessary that unwritten folklore uses of plant products must be documented and preserved. In this connection an attempt was made to collect folklore information about poisonous bites from Rayalaseema forests. The critical review of literature (Jain, 1991; Kirtikar and Basu, 1935; Rama Rao and Henry, 1996) revealed that very few and sporadic attempts were made on crude drugs used for poisonous bites (Reddy et al., 1996 and Imam et al., 2003).

    Chapter 2 Physical Features 2.1 Geographical disposition Nagarjunasagar - Somasila link canal takes off from the existing Nagarjunasagar reservoir from its right flank earth dam and runs parallel to the NSRBC to its right side, till both the canals amalgamate into one at RD 202.75 km. Beyond this point upto its out-fall into Somasila reservoir, the canal generally runs in south direction. The canal passes through the mandals of Macherla, Durgi, Karampudi, Piduguralla, Nekarikallu, Ipuru and Bollapalli of Guntur district, Pullala Cheruvu, Tripurantakam, Donakonda, Kurichedu, Konakanamitla, Podili, Kanigiri, Veligandla and Pamuru of Prakasam district and Varikuntapadu, Udayagiri, Duttalur, Marripadu and Anantasagaram mandals of Nellore district. 2.2 Topography of the basins and command area The link project including its command area falls in the basins of the Krishna, Gundlakamma, the streams between Gundlakamma and Pennar, and Pennar. The topography of these basins is described briefly in the following sections: 2.2.1 Krishna basin The Krishna basin is bounded on the north by the common ridge separating it from Godavari basin, on the south and east by the Eastern Ghats and on the west by Western Ghats. Except for the hills forming the watershed round the basin, the entire drainage basin of the river comprises of rolling and undulating country and a series of ridges and valleys interspersed with low hill ranges. Large flat areas of the type seen in the Indo - Gangetic plains are scarce except in the deltas. The interior of the basin in its middle reaches is a plateau, the greater part of which is at an elevation of 300 to 600 m.
