Lab Exercise 10 Sensory Tests Eye Anatomy Vision Tests Ear Anatomy Hearing Tests Textbook Reference: See Chapter 15 What you need to be able to do on the exam after completing this lab exercise: Be able to answer any question regarding the reflex/sensory tests, including the name of the reflex/sensory test, how it is performed, and what it is testing. For example, the patellar reflex test is testing the conduction of the femoral nerve. Be able to identify the listed parts of the eye on the eye models. Be able to answer any question regarding the vision tests, including the name of the test, how the test is performed, and what the results mean. Be able to answer any question regarding the hearing tests, including the name of the test, how the test is performed, and what the results mean. 10-1 Sensory Tests Reflexes are involuntary, instantaneous movements in response to stimuli. Reflexes are mediated via a reflex arc, which includes a receptor, sensory neuron, integration center, motor neuron, and effector. Stretch Reflexes A stretch reflex is a muscle contraction in response to stretching within a muscle. Patellar Reflex The patellar (knee-jerk) reflex is an example of a stretch reflex. The patellar reflex tests the conduction of the femoral nerve. 1. Sit on the lab bench with your feet dangling down. 2. Have your lab partner tap the patellar ligament with the blunt side of a patellar reflex hammer. The tap should be 3-4 inches below the kneecap, and firm, but not hard enough to hurt. -

PhysMate Lab 6: Patellar and Achilles Stretch Reflexes Start the Software 1. Click on LabScribeLite 2. Click Settings → StretchReflexes EMG Cable Setup 1. Plug the PTP-100 Pulse sensor into the Sensor port on the PhysMate. 2. Plug the red, black and green electrodes (C-ISO-SL5) into the PhysMate. 3. Use an alcohol swab to clean and scrub the areas where the electrodes will be placed and let the areas dry before attaching the electrodes. 4. Snap the recording lead wires onto the electrodes before placing the them on the subject: ▪ the black lead is attached to an electrode which is about 12cm from the knee. ▪ the red lead is attached to an electrode which is about 10cm above the black electrode. ▪ the green lead (ground) is attached to the electrode on the knee. StretchReflexes - PhysMate PM-6-1 5. Attach the pulse sensor to the side of the head of the patellar hammer with its velcro strap. When the reflex hammer strikes the tendon, the sensor will mark the recording when the tendon was struck. NOTE: Do NOT strike the hammer on the pulse sensor. The pulse sensor is just strapped to the side of the reflex hammer to pick up the vibration of the strike on the tendon. Exercise 1: Patellar Tendon (Knee Jerk) Reflex Aim: To determine conduction time from tendon tap to response of the quadriceps muscle in the patellar tendon reflex arc. Procedure 1. Instruct the subject to sit on a lab bench so that the subject’s thighs are supported by the top of the bench and his or her calves hang freely. -

Reflexes maintain homeostasis (autonomic reflexes) – heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and digestion. b. Reflexes also carry out the automatic action of swallowing, sneezing, coughing, and vomiting. c. Reflexes maintain balance & posture. ex. Spinal reflexes – control trunk and limb muscles. d. Nerve impulses follow nerve pathways as they travel through the nervous system. The simplest of these pathways, including a few neurons, constitutes a reflex arc. Passmore and Bruno Chiropractic & Manual Therapies 2012, 20:29 http://chiromt.com/content/20/1/29 CHIROPRACTIC & MANUAL THERAPIES RESEARCH Open Access Anatomically remote muscle contraction facilitates patellar tendon reflex reinforcement while mental activity does not: a within- participants experimental trial Steven R Passmore1,2* and Paul A Bruno3 Abstract Background: The Jendrassik maneuver (JM) is a remote facilitation muscular contraction shown to affect amplitude and temporal components of the human stretch reflex. Conflicting theoretical models exist regarding the neurological mechanism related to its ability to reinforce reflex parameters. One mechanism involves the gamma motoneurons of the fusimotor system, which are subject to both physical and mental activity. A second mechanism describes reduced alpha motoneuron presynaptic inhibition, which is not subject to mental activity. In the current study, we determined if mental activity could be used to create a reflex facilitation comparable to a remote muscle contraction. Method: Using a within-participants design, we investigated the relative effect of the JM and a successfully employed mental task (Stroop task) on the amplitude and temporal components of the patellar tendon reflex. Results: We found that the addition of mental activity had no influence on the patellar tendon reflex parameters measured, while the JM provided facilitation (increased reflex amplitude, decreased total reflex time). Conclusion: The findings from this study support the view that the mechanism for the JM is a reduction in presynaptic inhibition of alpha motoneurons as it is influenced by physical and not mental activity.
