Hanging For the past 15 years I have been working with glass in some form: flower jewelry, abstracts, , fusing functional and nonfunctional piec- pot es, garden art with lots of color. I have taken many classes from very talented people, world famous as well as locally famous. The Glass Guild has provided many opportunities for growth and learn-

ing. I’m still looking for my niche. W I get inspiration from the outdoors A in all the seasons, fabric designs, T photographs, and other artists. I love putting colors together in dif- E ferent ways. Working in glass is R often meditative and soothing and F also frustrating and challenging. President’s Message

As we enter into the fall of this pandemic year, I hope all is well with you and your family. The Guild is working very hard to plan events and trainings and get information out. Our meetings are all on Zoom for the rest of the year, so please watch out for the links sent out in emails and join us. Our contest went very well with 48 people submitting over 100 entries. Congratulation to all the winners who won prizes, but remember we are all winners if we at least try and grow from our experiences. Some fun meetings have been planned. On September 30 at 7pm, we will have a demo on circle cutting and cutting rings. This may be a review for some or a first time experience for others. Both can be tricky to do, so I will definitely be watching for new tips. We will also be restarting the Fusers’ Group every third Wednesday of the month. These Zoom get togethers will be hosted by Lynda Sprecher, a very talented glass artist. It will be a time to show your work and to ask questions. If you show a piece that you want to have help with and or get ideas for remember to have your firing schedule handy. Our state meeting is scheduled for October 28 at 7pm. At this meeting we will elect our board for the coming year. We are still looking for a secretary. According to our bylaws we need a secretary for all the board meetings. The guild cannot exist if we don’t have a secretary. So, I’m asking someone to step forward and volunteer for this position. There will be people to help, a template of how to write up the meeting notes, and all meetings are recorded so you can check back in case you a missed something. If you are interested please contact me at [email protected] or Suzanne, the current secretary, at [email protected] for more information. We really do need someone to step forward! Our new website is being built. This will modernize it and make it much easier to navigate. More information is to come on that. If you have ideas for Play Days, trainings, or teaching opportunities please join us at the board meetings and let us know or just contact me. Stay well and keep on creating beautiful glass creations!

AND A WORD FROM ONE OF OUR SPONSORS—MELT

Hello, my name is Sheri Spurlock and 35+ years ago, my mother set up a stained glass studio in our basement. Within a few short years, we had opened a small stained glass shop in Milwaukie, Oregon. For many years we enjoyed great success as a design studio, teaching facility and supply shop. We developed strong relationships with the local glass manufacturers in their early days, and still enjoy those relationships today. Over the years, we have tailored our business specifically to meet the needs of the stained glass, , torchwork, and fusing hobbyists, artists, and small studio owners.

Today, Melt continues to grow, innovate and expand at the current storefront in Vancouver, Washington! Owing to our long history, we pride ourselves on being able to not only provide supplies for, but also to educate, our fellow glass artists. We operate our business from a cute little storefront at 502 Washington Street, Vancouver, Washington where we welcome artists to come in and browse our huge selection of dichroic glass, sheet glass, rods, tools and supplies. Need help with a firing schedule or having trouble with your solder lines? We are here to help!

Everyone on our staff is a glass artist in their own right. We are involved in shows, art shows and galleries across the Pacific Northwest. This gives us all a unique understanding of trends, new products and the importance of everyday fair pricing vs fake sales and promotions. Shopping at Melt, you can feel confident that you're getting a fair price and a quality product...every day.

Class Opportunities Cascadia Center for Arts and (cascadiaarts.org) is proud to announce two new classes being offered in September.

PNWGG member, Shirley Bishop, from Washougal, WA is teaching a "powder casting and crackle" class. As embellishments for background textures, or as stand alone pieces, these techniques are fantastic. Shirley is simply an awesome teacher and will share her valuable knowledge and skill in this class. There is a limit of 6 students (due to Covid-19) but if there is enough interest, a second class could be presented.

The second class of interest to PNWGG would be Kathy McCullough's Precious Metal Clay (PMC-3) class. This is a 3 hour class allowing 3 students per session for very personal help from the instructor. There is a MORNING and AFTERNOON session...so all in all 6 students for the day. Again, if there is added interest, we can schedule additional classes. PMC 3 allows the incorporation of glass (think dichroic), gems or the simple elegance of the silver alone.

Additionally, PNWGG member Carlyne Lynch will be teaching Introduction to , This 6 hour class is limited to 4 students. You will learn to work with a torch, glass pieces and metal tools while learning safety, core skills of flame working and specialty skills in making fusing components. You will pull stringers and create fusing components. Each student will bring home unique items for fusing. All supplies will be provided including glass, mandrels, safety and tools to use.

To sign up for any of these classes, go to cascadiaarts.org and look at class calendar for September and you will be directed to the class of your choice.

Website Update From Carlyne Lynch, Web Team

The Pacific NW Glass Guild’s virtual contest was a great success!! The entry fees helped us raise money to update our website. Our Board awarded a contract for redoing the website to Kathy Engholm, a past website administrator for OGG. Work on our new site has begun. Along with a major restructuring, the website will focus on better communication and easier membership access. Additionally, there will be new online payment options, membership portfolios (including photos of artists’ works) and an updated notification and ad system. Plug-ins have been purchased to assist the membership chair and treasurer in their duties. News blogs, resources, references and a new Calendar are in the works. No longer will just two or three administrators have the ability to add information to the site. Now, with the new roles, multiple members will be able to participate in authoring and content development tools. We are excited about sharing this website with our broader Northwest community. This has been made easier with Zoom meetings, videos, and YouTube. PNWGG has now added a YouTube Channel to host videos of our monthly meetings and Play Days. Currently we have a three part video on Pricing Your Glass. This video series features Linda Gerrard, Mitzi Kugler and Bob Heath. Links to the Channel are on the home page of the website. Please subscribe! Soon the Enamel Play Days 3 part video will also be made available. If you have an idea for a Play Day on Zoom, please contact your Web staff.

Coming Events

While COVID-19 has kept in person meetings restricted, OGG/PNWGG has embraced Zoom!! So far, we have successfully hosted Board meetings and a General Meeting along with extra planning meetings for the guild. With Zoom, we have met new members face to face virtually. Please watch your emails for Zoom invites to PNWGG events. The invites should go to your email box a week before and also a reminder a few days ahead of the event. In the spring, at NicholsArtGlass studio, Charlene Fort and Andy Nichols live streamed the making glass roll up . They blew vases from COE 90 kiln formed panels made by OGG members. OGG members and other glassies linked in to view this live session. In July, Bob Heath, Mitzi Kugler, and Linda Gerrard hosted a very informative General Meeting on “How to Price Your Glass”. The video sessions and handouts are on the home page of the guild’s website. In August, the OGG/PNWGG zoomed a live Board Meeting to plan events and to discuss issues for the current year. Because the corona virus is still actively present, we discussed what and how we would offer our upcoming events.

Here is our current lineup: General Meeting: Wednesday, August 26, at 7pm “Art during COVID-19” – Zoom Meeting. PNWGG invites all our members (fused, cold, torch, jewelry and blown glass) to participate. SHOW and TELL: show a glass piece completed during the pandemic, tell us about the process, what you liked about the piece, and what you’d like to have done differently. The goal of this meeting is to have other glass artists comment on your art work. Be prepared to hear how “absolutely amazing” it is or to have a gentle, but positive critique of what you made. If you fused the glass, it would be helpful to have your schedule since mistakes often are due to how the glass was fired. Zoom allows us to screen share so you might even want to have the firing schedule that you used written down. Play Day: Cascadia Tour on Wednesday, September 9th. Charlene Fort will lead a tour of the Cascadia Cener for Arts and Crafts in Government Camp. There will be 3 groups: 10 -12 am, 12 -1 pm, and 2-4 pm. If you would like to attend and reserve a time, please contact [email protected]. No actual glass will be made at the tour. More details later. Fusers’ Group: Wednesday, September 16th from 7-9pm. This is a place to show your work, to ask questions and for fellowship. In the past, the monthly group had met in Lynda Sprecher’s home on the third Wednesday evening of the month, but now we’re Zooming which offers “more seats in the house”! This is not a guild sponsored meeting and it is open to the public; you don’t have to be a member of OGG/PNWGG to attend. Zoom invitations will be emailed out from the Guild. Play Days: to be assigned. We would love to have our members present a video or live stream a glass activity. Carlyne Lynch and Margie Rieff will try to put together a videoed play day in September or earlier, if possible. Board Meeting: Sunday, September 20th at 1pm, Zoom discussion is about expenditures and most importantly a decision on whether to have the Open Studio Tour on November 14 & 15, 2020. Richard Glenn is this year’s Chair of the Studio Tour. The decision will in large part depend on the percentage of cases of the corona virus in the participating counties. Please be present at this meeting to let us know what you think. General Meeting: Wednesday, September 30th at 7pm, How to Cut Circles and Rings. For some glass people circles are extremely frustrating. Learn some tips in how to cut circles. Fusers’ Group: Wednesday, October 21st at 7pm, open to the public. Lynda Sprecher will lead the discussion. State Meeting: Wednesday, October 28th, vote for Board members and a presentation. Karen Seymour, SeymourStainedGlass, will present useful information on differences in temperatures and schedules for tack fusing. Open Studios to be determined: Saturday and Sunday, November 14 & 15, PNWGG members open their studios to show, demonstrate and sell their work. The artists help to educate the public about glass art. Some studios offer glass activities.

**As many you may already know, the Gathering of the Guilds will not occur during 2020. The GoTG will mostly likely be rescheduled to next Spring.
