3 Introduction

During the 2011-12 academic year, the Association will sponsor 89 national championships, of which 42 are for men, 44 are for women, and three are for both men and women. Among the men’s championships, three are National Collegiate Championships, 13 are Division I championships, 12 are Division II championships and 14 are Division III championships. Among the women’s championships, five are National Collegiate Championships, 12 are Division I championships, 13 are Division II championships and 14 are Division III championships. The combined men’s and women’s championships are National Collegiate Championships.

A Pre-championship Manual is produced for each NCAA championship and posted online at NCAA.org. This manual outlines important championship information that affects preseason, in-season and post-season competition for the respective sport, and specifically information regarding qualifying for and selection to the championships. Specific information and details regarding the championships will be included in the Participant Manual for each site.

How to Use This Publication. The Pre-championship Manual is divided into two sections: General Administration and Determination of Championships Participation. Section one includes contact information, important dates and deadlines, site information, and NCAA policies. Section two outlines information more specific to the respective sport, including championships structure, qualifying criteria and selection information.

Championships Information Regional Alignmnet Regionalization is a Division II championships policy that requires sport commit- tees to select a predetermined number of teams in each of the regions of the sports involved. This policy is based on an assumption that due to the regional nature of most Division II schools, sport committees should evaluate and select champion- ships participant based on regional results, as opposed to a national evaluation.

The Division II regionalization philosophy provides access to national champion- ships from every region of the country, which guarantees that the different re- gions of the country will be represented at the championship by each region’s best teams.

For Division II women’s volleyball, the top eight teams in each region are selected to the championships and will compete against each other at regional competition. One team from each region will advance to the national championships. The con- ferences and institutions that are part of each region are outlined in Appendix C.

Regional Advisory Committee Information Regional Advisory Committees (RACs) act in an advisory capacity for the na- tional committee to assist with the evaluation of teams throughout the season, the evaluation of potential regional sites and the recommendation for the champion- ship final site. National committee members serve as chairs of their respective RACs. Each conference representing women’s volleyball has equal representation on their respective regional advisory committees. A roster of all RACs is posted on the NCAA website at www.NCAA.org.

Championships Information such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifest not only in athletic participation, but also in the broad spectrum of activities associated with the championship event. Accord- ingly, the championships committee will take strong action in response to any form of misconduct by student-athletes, coaches and/or administrators during the entire championship. This includes criticism of officials and misconduct incident to the competition.

Misconduct is defined as “any act of dishonesty, unsportsmanlike conduct, un- professional behavior or breach of law, occurring from the time the championship field is announced through the end of the championship that discredits the event or intercollegiate athletics.”

If the act of misconduct occurs during the competition, under normal circum- stances, the individual shall be allowed to complete the competition in which he or she is participating at the time of the incident. An administrative hearing shall be held at the conclusion of the day’s competition, during a break in the continuity of the championship (i.e., between rounds of a tournament) when no competition is being conducted or at the conclusion of the championship. How- ever, if the act of misconduct is so flagrant that it obviously violates the principles of fair play and sportsmanship, the games committee may immediately withdraw the student-athlete or institutional representative from the competition and con- duct the hearing after this action. Other actions of misconduct shall be dealt with in a timely manner by the governing sports committee.

Expectations for student-athletes, coaches and administrators include:

• Cooperate and participate in game ceremonies, team meetings, community engagement and championship ceremonies. • Discuss misconduct and possible consequences with all members of the trav- el party. • Have an administrator or designee present at all competitions. • Communicate issues and concerns in an honest and timely manner with NCAA staff. • Follow team, university and NCAA guidelines throughout all championship- related activities. • Be respectful of other participants, spectators, coaches, administrators and other individuals at the championship site. • Abide by state and federal laws, and facility requirements throughout the championship event. 8 • the possiblepenaltiesformisconduct. been read, andmustagreeto abidebytheexpectations set forthandunderstand NCAA rulespertaining to theDivision IIChampionshipsCodeofConducthave participating in thechampionships willbeaskedtosignaformcertify that all administrators and shouldbetreated as such. Ethical Behavior by Coaches As a member of the coaching profession, coaches have inherent obligations and responsibilities to the profession, to the student-athletes and to all those with whom they come into contact. Coaches are expected to be role models and to conduct themselves with integrity and high ethical standards at all times. In order to fulfill these responsibilities, a coach must:

1. Per NCAA Bylaw 17.33, conduct all intercollegiate competition in accor- dance with the playing rules of the Association. 2. Place the safety and welfare of others ahead of winning and personal prestige. 3. Treat all people with honesty, fairness and respect. (In particular, such things as vulgar and profane language or taunting, intimidating or baiting opponents or the media, are not acceptable from a coach or a student-athlete.) 4. Teach and model for student-athletes and staff members strict adherence to the rules and regulations of the sport and its governing bodies. 5. Recognize, accept and teach to the team and the staff that their public behav- ior projects an image of the program and the university or college they rep- resent. Therefore, behavior should be appropriate and honorable at all times.

Rules Per NCAA Bylaw 17.32, member institutions shall conduct all of their intercol- legiate competition in accordance with the playing rules of the Association in all sports for which the NCAA develops playing rules. For those sports in which the Association follows rules that are developed by other governing bodies and are modified by the governing sports committee, the adopted playing rules shall be used. The governing sports committee will not consider any results for selection purposes that are not played in accordance with the NCAA rules, or those rules adopted by an outside organization.

The 2011 and 2012 NCAA Volleyball Rules book will be followed for the 2011 season. Questions regarding the interpretation of rules should be referred to vol- leyball secretary-rules editor Marcia Alterman (phone: 316/721-2866; email: ma- [email protected]).

Championships Information Determination of Championship Participation Certification of Eligibility/Availability Only student-athletes eligible under Bylaws 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 may compete in NCAA championships. Member institutions are required to certify the eligibility of their student-athletes before the beginning of each academic year and to withhold ineligible student-athletes from all intercollegiate competition. For institutions that are under consideration for selection, the athletics directors and chancellors or presidents must complete the eligiblity form located on the NCAA website at http:// web1.ncaa.org/d2eligibility/login.jsp. The form will be used to verify the eligibility of student-athletes for NCAA championship selections. The form is not intended to require schools to recertify the eligibility of every student-athlete. Rather, the form is to ensure that eligibility questions are resolved during the season instead of schools delaying eligibility questions until after the championship has been completed. If the status of a student-athlete changes after the deadline, please contact Roberta Page at the NCAA national office. The penalties for using an ineligible student-athlete are assessed to the ranking and selection criteria for that respective team. All contests in which an ineligible student- athlete competes will be nullified. The number of nullified contests is identified and the penalty is assessed for each nullified contest. If a student-athlete was deemed ineligible and then reinstated through the NCAA reinstatement process, only those contests in which the student-athlete competed while ineligible will be nullified. A penalty will be applied in two categories: the win-loss record percentage and the strength-of-schedule index (overall and in-region, if applicable). A team’s won-lost record that falls below .500 after adjustments for nullification(s) will be ineligible for championships selections to fill at-large berths. The competition prior to or after that time will not be nullified. during the 2011-12 season are as follows: In In In Region Region Overall W/L DII DII Avg. DII Avg. Region Avg. Avg.
