FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: August 22, 2011 Jessica Wolf 310.825.7789 [email protected] Saxophone Colossus Sonny Rollins Kicks off UCLA Live 2011-12 Season September 22 at Royce Hall Jazz legend and saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins performs Thursday, September 22 at UCLA Live’s Royce Hall in one of only three West Coast stops on his current world tour, launching the 2011-12 season with one of the most accomplished composers and performers in jazz history. A winner of two album Grammys and a lifetime achievement award, Rollins is revered for his impeccable and inspiring live performances that showcase his improvisational artistry. Rollins’ rich catalog of jazz compositons, including “St. Thomas,” “Oleo” and “Airegin,”have become standards. Rollins latest album, Road Shows, Vol. 2 hits stores September 13, featuring an unprecedented array of appearances from friends old and new, including Jim Hall, Roy Haynes, Christian McBride, Roy Hargrove, and, most unexpectedly, alto sax revolutionary Ornette Coleman. The album was recorded at Rollins 80 th birthday celebration at New York’s Beacon Theatre on September 10, 2010. A 2005 New Yorker profile sums up the unique relationship between this living legend and his instrument: “With its brass body, its pearl-button keys, its mouthpiece, and its cane reed, the horn becomes the vessel for the epic of Rollins’ talent and the undimmed power and lore of his jazz ancestors.” Rollins was also named 2011 Musician of the Year and Tenor Saxophonist of the year by the Jazz Journalists Association. Last year, President Barak Obama named Rollins one of 20 recipients of the National Medal of Arts, the U.S. government’s top honor for artists and arts patrons.
