TRANSCRIBED AND EDITED BY EDITH B. ARMYTAGE PRIVATELY PRINTED FOR THE YORKSHIRE PARISH REGISTER SOCIETY 1903. HAROLD B. LEE LIBRARY BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY ^"^mnvnFROVOk'WAHJ ITAH — — PREFACE. The Registers printed in the following pages are those of the Parish of Hartshead, anciently called Hertesheved or Hartshead- cum-Clifton. It is a chapelry within the Parish of Dewsbury, and comprises the two townships of Hartshead and Clifton, which accord- ing to the Ordnance Survey contains 3,070 acres, and had in 181 1 a population of 1,728, increased in 1901 to 3,452 persons. The entries up to 181 3 are contained in three volumes. The first volume, containing baptisms, marriages and burials intermixed, is 13 inches long by 8 inches wide, the pages of the same being partly 12 by 7^, and partly u| by 7^. It was much dilapidated, but fortunately was thoroughly restored in 181 1. It is bound in full Russia leather, and inscribed on the side : THE REGISTER OF THE PARISH OF HARTSHEAD. Volume I. It contains a title-page, as follows : THE REGIS T E R OF THE PAROCHIAL CHAPEL OF HARTSHEAD,' Anciently written Herteshevet. Uohtme 3L Containing Baptisms, Marriages and Burials from the 4th May, 1612, to jot/i Decent'', 1692, inclusive. Collated and Prepared for re-binding by WILLIAM RADCLYFFE, Of Darley Hall in this County, Esquere. Rouge Croix Persuivant of Arms. Rc-bound at his Expence and under his immediate inspection in the College of Arms, London. 1811. which is beautifully printed by hand and accompanied by drawings of arms, a photograph of which forms the frontispiece of this volume. — — — There is a transcript of this first volume, made apparently about 1760, in which the spelling of the names and places is much modernised. The original spelling has, however, been adhered to, and the proofs corrected therewith. This transcript is on paper 12^ by 8 inches, and contains 72 pages in double columns, ruled in red ink. It was re-bound in 1882 and labelled: COPY OF REGISTER OF CHRISTENINGS, MARRIAGES and BURIALS, May, 161 2, to October, 1692. The original Register is in the same handwriting from the beginning in May, 1612, to November, 1649. There is another hand to the end of March, 1657-8, and various hands to the end of the book in December, 1692. The second volume is 19^ inches long by 7^ inches wide, bound in full calf, rough side out, with a red label on the side lettered in gold : ST. PETER'S CHURCH, HARTSHEAD. REGISTER OF BAPTISMS, April, 1692, to March, 1798. MARRIAGES, August, 1692, to March, 1798. BURIALS, April, 1692, to March, 1798. It contains 282 pages in good preservation, having been re-bound in its own cover and repaired in 1882. The third volume is bound in full calf. It is 22^ inches long by 10 inches wide, and has a label on the side : ST. PETER'S CHURCH, HARTSHEAD. REGISTER OF BAPTISMS, March, 179S, to Dec, 18 12. MARRIAGES, Jan., 1798, to Dec, 181 2. BURIALS, March, 1798, to Dec, 181 2. It contains several pages of spare paper, and is in excellent preservation. The book has been divided into three sections. The baptisms are folioed in pencil t to 27, marriages 28 to 57, and burials 58 to 73. It was repaired and re-bound in its own cover in 1882. There is no mention of the appointment of a " Register " under the Act of 1653, nor is there any indication that there was any change in the usual method of keeping the Register during the period 1653-1660. An entry relating to a flood is to be found on page 55, and another relating to a snowstorm on page 79. There are a few parish notes intermixed in the Register, such as appointments of parish clerks and repairs to the fabric, which it has not been considered necessary to reprint. The best thanks of the Society are due to the Vicar (the Rev. Thomas King, M.A.) for allowing the Register to be printed, and for the facilities he has kindly given for transcribing and examining the proofs. The Index has been compiled by Miss M<vry Child, the daughter of the Vicar of Clifton, which place is now a distinct ecclesiastical district, but which at the period of this Register was included in Hortshead.
