The older dance styles that were created in the 1970s include up-rock, breaking, and the funk styles. At the same time breaking was developing in New York, other styles were being created in California. Several street dance styles created in California in the 1970s such as roboting, bopping, hitting, locking, bustin', popping, electric boogaloo, strutting, sac-ing, and dime-stopping. It is historically inaccurate to say that the funk styles were always considered hip-hop. "Hip-Hop Dance" became an umbrella term encompassing all of these styles. Tempo of the Music: Tempo: 27 - 28 bars per minute (108 - 112 beats per minute) Characteristics and Movement: Different new dance styles, such as Quick Popping Crew, Asian style, African style, Hype Dance, New-Jack-Swing, Popping & Locking, Jamming, etc., adding creative elements such as stops, jokes, flashes, swift movements, etc. Some Electric and Break movements can be performed but should not dominate. Floor figures are very popular but should not dominate the performance.

Reviving Ballet in the Nineteenth Century: Music, Narrative, and Dance in Delibes’s Coppélia By Copyright 2013 Arthur E. Lafex Submitted to the graduate degree program in Music and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music. ________________________________ Chairperson Alicia Levin ________________________________ Paul R. Laird ________________________________ David Alan Street Date Defended: April 15, 2013 The Thesis Committee for Author (Arthur E. Lafex) certifies that this is the approved version of the following thesis: Reviving Ballet in the Nineteenth Century: Music, Narrative, and Dance in Delibes’s Coppélia ________________________________ Chairperson Alicia Levin Date approved: April 15, 2013 ii Abstract Léo Delibes (1836-1891) wrote ballet scores that have inspired composers and have entertained generations of ballet lovers. His scores have been cited for their tunefulness, appropriateness for their narrative, and for their danceability. However, Delibes remains an obscure figure in music history, outside the musical canon of the nineteenth century. Likewise, his ballet music, whose harmonic resources are conventional and whose forms are variants of basic structures, has not received much scholarly and theoretical attention. This thesis addresses Delibes’s music by examining his ballet score for Coppélia, its support of narrative and also its support of dance. Chapter 1 begins with a historical view of ballet and ballet music up to the time of Delibes. Following a biographical sketch of the composer, a review of aspects of the score for Giselle by his mentor, Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) establishes a background upon which Delibes’s ballets can be considered.

  • Workshop Schedule 20171
Workshop Schedule 20171 Block 1: Friday evening 20:30-22:00 A: Asymmetrical Waltz by Eric, level 3 Tired of always dancing a waltz in 3? Seeks no further! In this workshop you will learn to dance to asymmetrical waltzes, which have plenty of variation. From 5 time waltz to 8, 11 time, 14 time, 17 time waltz... We will also work on different ways to dance to the 8 (3-3- 2 and 3-2- 3) and 11 (3-3- 3- 2, 3-2- 3-3, 3-3- 2-3) times waltz. Pre-requisites: You can dance a waltz in 3 times without problems. B: Slängpolska by Aurélie, level 3 This short workshop will be an excellent introduction to the Swedish folk dances in the beginning of this weekend. We’ll start with a dance which has a lot of success in Sweden; let’s make it more famous in the “South”! The slängpolska is a couple dance which comes in two forms: one is danced on a walk, the other on the spot. Both offer countless figures and possibilities of improvisation. The goal of this workshop is to allow dancers to discover the spirit of this dance and to acquire some tools so that each of them can create his/her own dance. C: Mixers by Elena, level 3 & 4 We all know mixers, such as the chapelloise/jig and the Circassian circle, but we rarely take them to the next level, which is what will keep these dances fun and interesting. During this workshop we will discover new mixers from different origins (folk, trad, Scottish repertoire), and focus on the techniques of group dances.

  • JOSEARCADIO Limon (1908 -1972)
CREATING SELFTHROUGH DANCE PERFORMANCE: A SELECTIVE INQUIRY INTO THE LIFE AND WORK OF JOSEARCADIO LIMoN (1908 -1972) A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Fine Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sarah Marie Adams, B.A. ***** The Ohio State University 1998 Master's Examination Committee: Approved by Professor Angelika Gerbes, Ph.D., Advisor Professor Michael Kelly Bruce Professor Sheila Marion, Ph.D. Professor Rosalind Pierson Department of Dance Copyright by Sarah Marie Adams 1998 ABSTRACT José Limón (1908 - 1972) was one of the most prominent American modern dance choreographer-performers of this century. His work survives through contemporary performances of the José Limón Dance Company, and through his students' teachings. However, Limón's contribution to the field of dance remains dramatically under-researched. While there are at least two forthcoming publications which will address Limón's life and work, dance research to date has largely neglected the contributions of this major artist. My thesis project addresses this gap in dance scholarship, exploring the manner in which Limón created his identity through dance. By studying José Limón, I also seek to understand the artistic heritage in which I place myself, as a dancer trained in the Limón style. I have investigated José Limón's life and work by consulting a wide variety of source materials. These include Limón's personal correspondence and handwritten autobiography, films of Limón's dancing and choreography, my own physical experience of dancing his choreographic movement, personal and previously recorded interviews with Limón dancers, and dance criticism texts which include analyses of Limón's work.
