    Press Release Chairman Justice Christopher Blackman Announcement of Winners of the Inaugural CARICOM Competition Commission (CCC) Regional Secondary School Essay Writing Competition 2019-2020 The CCC is pleased to announce the winners of its Inaugural Regional Secondary School Essay Competition, which concluded on 31st March 2020. The competition was a key component of the advocacy drive by the CCC to foster a competition and consumer culture in the region, from the ground up. Students were challenged to think about the importance and benefits of competition and consumer protection laws to the region. The CCC received 50 entries from students across the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Students in the CARICOM region are commended for the high quality of essays the CCC received, and for their creativity in the use of pictures and videos in some instances to articulate their views on the benefits of competition and consumer protection laws. There were two age categories for students: ages 12-15 and 16-19. They were asked to write on one of two topics: a) “How does fair competition among businesses benefit me and my region?” and b) “How does consumer protection law benefit me and my Region.?” It gives the CCC great pleasure to announce the winners of the two age categories as follows: Ages 12-15 students First place USD 1000: Hadassah Cuffy (St. Kitts & Nevis) Basseterre High School Second place USD 750: Hadiah McBean (Guyana) St Joseph Secondary Third place USD500: Hayley-Shai Kassie (Montserrat) Montserrat Secondary School Ages 16-19 students

    Vol. XLII No. 2 Spring 2019 Spring in the City Another good year for T&T Schools - see details inside 1 NAAC 2018 Bursary Winners Omar Baboolal is pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He graduated from high school with an Ontario Secondary Schools Diploma (OSSD) and an International Baccalaureate Diploma. During his Grade 11 year, he was elected by his peers across the school board to be their Student Trustee – to be an advocate for them at the Peel District School Board. Omar has varied interests, among them a passion for music, dance and theatre. Crystal Chandoo is currently studying criminology at Wilfrid Laurier University. Upon completing her four-year undergraduate degree, she intends to study law. During her years at high school, Crystal took part in theatrical performances – directing a play and acting and dancing in a musical production. Prior to entering university, she spent two summers as a counselor at a children’s camp. Nyla Noel is enrolled at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario in the Film Studies Program. Her goal upon graduation is to create short films and documentaries. At Laurier she started an American Sign Language (ASL) Association for undergraduate students, faculty and staff. Nyla has been creating her own screenplays in an effort to share her views on matters dear to her heart. These icons have done much, have given more and are easily identiable with the life, history and evolution of Trinidad and Tobago society since Independence. We acknowledge their talent, we are grateful for their contribution, and we are inspired by their patriotism, their dedication to their vocation, and their service to humanity. During that time I started to write poems and short stories.
