    50th Anniversary of Aberfan Disaster Official commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster have begun, to remember those that lost their lives on 21st October 1966. A total of 116 children and 28 adults died when a coal waste tip slid down a mountain, engulfing a school and surrounding houses. To mark the 50th anniversary, a series of events have been organised for those wishing to pay their respects and to remember the lives that were lost on this tragic day.
