EDITOR'S PREFACE 'Firthlands' embraces those eastern lowlands clustered around the Dor noch, Cromarty, Beauly and Inner Moray Firths. Firthlands of Ross and Sutherland focuses more particularly on the gentle and fertile country around the Dornoch and Cromarty Firths- from Golspie and Loch Fleet in the north, to Bonar Bridge, Tain and the Easter Ross peninsula, across to Cromarty and the Black Isle, and up-firth to Dingwall and Muir of Ord. Of the twelve contrasting chapters, one provides a broad geological background to the area and highlights landscape features as they have evolved through time- the Great Glen and Helmsdale Faults, glacially deepened and drowned river valleys, raised beaches, wave-formed shingle barriers. And it is the underlying geology that gave rise to the shape of early habitational and communications networks, to the Brora coal-mines and to the spa waters of Strathpeffer, to stone and sand and gravel and peat for extraction, to the nature and balance of agricultural practice, to the oil and gas fields off the coast. Such economic activity is most apparent for relatively recent times, so that six chapters concentrate on the seventeenth to early twentieth cen turies. Some explore trade and family links across to Moray and the Baltic, as well as with other parts of Scotland and beyond; others concentrate on changes in settlement patterns, agriculture and stock-rearing, both in the firthlands and their highland hinterland; yet others are more concerned with a particularly rich architectural heritage.In each case, there is a weave between Highlander and Lowlander, spiced with the ever-increasing exposure of the north to southern influences and pressures. -

Ring the walk leader on the Thursday evening for more information Walks Grading System Our grading system is generally similar to that used by many walking clubs throughout the UK and beyond: A Suitable for fit and experienced hill-walkers. Long mountain days with lots of ascent and descent over rough terrain, some of it steep. A+ indicates a grade at the top end of this category requiring scrambling experience, a good head for heights and the ability to cope with sustained traverses over very rugged and demanding terrain. B Suitable for regular walkers, fit novices or anyone who takes regular aerobic exercise. Mixture of paths, tracks and rough terrain with some steeper gradients in places. B+ indicates a grade at the top end of this category because of longer sections of rough terrain and/or steeper gradients. C Suitable for walkers with average fitness, limited experience, or anyone wanting to walk at an easy pace. Mainly on paths and tracks with easy gradients. Moray Offshore Renewables Limited - Environmental Statement Telford, Stevenson and MacColl Offshore Wind Farms and Transmission Infrastructure 5 Human Environment 5.1 Commercial Fisheries 5.1 5.1.1 Introduction 5.1.1.1 This chapter summarises the baseline study of commercial fishing activities, including salmon and sea trout fisheries, in the vicinity of the three proposed development sites (Telford, Stevenson and MacColl) and the offshore transmission infrastructure (OfTI). For the purpose of this study, commercial fishing is defined as CHAPTER any legal fishing activity undertaken for declared taxable profit. 5.1.1.2 The following technical appendices support this chapter and can be found as: Technical Appendix 4.3 B (Salmon and Sea Trout Ecology Technical Report). Technical Appendix 5.1 A (Commercial Fisheries Technical Report). 5.1.1.3 For the purposes of this assessment, salmon and sea trout fisheries in the Moray Firth are separately addressed to other commercial fisheries, as a result of their being located largely in-river (with the exception of some coastal netting) and being different in nature to the majority of marine commercial fishing activities. In addition, due to the migratory behaviour of salmon and sea trout, fisheries have been assessed for all rivers flowing into the Moray Firth. It is also recognised that salmon is a qualifying feature or primary reason for Special Area of Conservation (SAC) site selection of the following rivers in the Moray Firth: Berriedale and Langwell Waters SAC (primary reason); River Moriston -

SCOTTISH STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS 2019 No. 56 FISHERIES RIVER SEA FISHERIES The Conservation of Salmon (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 2019 Made - - - - 18th February 2019 Laid before the Scottish Parliament 20th February 2019 Coming into force - - 1st April 2019 The Scottish Ministers make the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by section 38(1) and (6)(b) and (c) and paragraphs 7(b) and 14(1) of schedule 1 of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 2003( a) and all other powers enabling them to do so. In accordance with paragraphs 10, 11 and 14(1) of schedule 1 of that Act they have consulted such persons as they considered appropriate, directed that notice be given of the general effect of these Regulations and considered representations and objections made. Citation and Commencement 1. These Regulations may be cited as the Conservation of Salmon (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 2019 and come into force on 1 April 2019. Amendment of the Conservation of Salmon (Scotland) Regulations 2016 2. —(1) The Conservation of Salmon (Scotland) Regulations 2016( b) are amended in accordance with paragraphs (2) to (4). (2) In regulation 3(2) (prohibition on retaining salmon), for “paragraphs (2A) and (3)” substitute “paragraph (3)”. (3) Omit regulation 3(2A). (a) 2003 asp 15. Section 38 was amended by section 29 of the Aquaculture and Fisheries (Scotland) Act 2013 (asp 7). (b) S.S.I. 2016/115 as amended by S.S.I. 2016/392 and S.S.I. 2018/37. (4) For schedule 2 (inland waters: prohibition on retaining salmon), substitute the schedule set out in the schedule of these Regulations.
