If the fi rst book has its roots in the dissertation, and therefore always feels as if it were being written “for” something or someone else, the second book emerges out of a strange freedom: one is writing, simply, because one must write. At the same time, this project is the fruit of provocative and inspiring conversations and exchanges with a great number of people and, in this sense, is very much written “for” these others: if not out of an institutional or professional obligation, then out of a genuine intellectual debt. These people—teachers and stu- dents, colleagues and interlocutors—populate each page of this book, beginning with my former professors who are now dear friends, Sylvia Molloy and Gabriela Basterra. I had the good fortune to begin my academic career at one of the most stimulating places to research Latin American literary and cultural studies. At the University of Pittsburgh, I taught—and learned from—a wonderful group of graduate students in the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures. A lot has happened since I began to write Figurative Inquisitions. Preface: Inquisitional Logic The interrelated practices of interrogation, torture, and confession are global phenomena that, while they have existed for several millennia, have resurfaced in public debates since the early 2000s after accounts of human rights abuses in U.S. prisons and “black sites” abroad began to circulate and, in early 2009, after a newly elected President Obama issued a directive to close the Guantánamo Bay detention camp as one of his fi rst orders of business (a promise that has yet to be fulfi lled).1 In the years following these events, there has been a proliferation of discussion about the use of torture that has remained restricted to three principal fi elds: the legal (is it allowed?), the pragmatic (does it work?), and the moral (is it right?). What has often remained left out of the con- versation—which revolves around the ostensibly competing demands of national security and universal human rights—is the seemingly less im- mediate but vital question of what torture does. What happens within the scene of interrogation and torture? What kinds of subjects and truths are produced through the acts of questioning and confession? Why, indeed, do we torture? This book dwells upon the relationship between scenes of interroga- tion and the identities and discourses

An Anatomy of Marginality: Figures of the Eternal Return and the Apocalypse in Chilean Post-Dictatorial Fiction Abstract The article analyzes two novels by Chilean writer Diamela Eltit from the standpoint of the post-dictatorial imperative to mourn the dead and reactivate collective memory. After framing Eltit's fiction in the context of the avant-garde resurgence of plastic and performance arts in the second half of Pinochet's regime, I move on to discuss Lumpérica (1983) and Los vigilantes (1994) as two different manifestations of the temporality of mourning. The article addresses how Lumpérica's portrayal of an oneiric, orgiastic communion in marginality (shared by the protagonist and a mass of beggars at a Santiago square) composed an allegory in the strict Benjaminian sense; it further notes how such allegory, as an anti- dictatorial, oppositional gesture, could only find a home in a temporality modeled after the eternal return.

A petition has been started (and garnered over 1600 signatures) and there have been heated arguments back and forth concerning the historical significance of the house. The decision, which, once made public, appalled and saddened local residents, current students, alumni, faculty, and staff alike, is unlikely to be changed, and as of this writing both the provost and BGSU’s president have issued statements expressing their determination to proceed with the demolition as part of the administration’s Master Plan for the complete overhaul of BGSU’s campus. Segundo o Código dos Direitos de Autor e dos Direitos Conexos, em seu capítulo IV e artigo 31º, o direito de autor caduca, na falta de disposição especial, 70 anos após a morte do criador intelectual, mesmo que a obra só tenha sido publicada ou divulgada postumamente. O nosso Projeto, que tem por único e exclusivo objetivo colaborar em prol da divulgação do bom conhecimento na Internet, busca assim não violar nenhum direito autoral. Todavia, caso seja encontrado algum livro que, por alguma razão, esteja ferindo os direitos do autor, pedimos a gentileza que nos informe, a fim de que seja devidamente suprimido de nosso acervo.     Reseñas los planteamientos de su maestro para hacer un alto y poner en evi- dencia una de las falencias más criticadas a los estudios culturales: la subordinación de la obra por la búsqueda de un discurso social o ideológico (122). Es muy importante que Bueno reconsidere este aspecto como uno de los puntos que más estridencias ha generado en otras academias, escuelas y corrientes del pensamiento latinoame- ricano, pues no en vano se presenta como problemático. ¿Puede una obra literaria sobrevivir a la pesquisa sociológica o de ideologías? Otra pregunta que queda abierta de forma muy pertinente en el texto. Para finalizar, están los dos ensayos en los que Bueno retoma una voz más familiar para recordar los años de Cornejo Polar a la cabecera del proyecto de universidad popular en Latinoamérica y, por otro lado, su trabajo con la Casa de la Cultura de Arequipa. El autor rescata del investigador su fuerte interés por impulsar y expandir la educación hasta las clases sociales más desfavorecidas, siendo coherente con su pensamiento de que la academia no se alimenta solamente de clases altas, sino de la afortunada mezcla entre ambas y la aceptación de una cultura propia y real entre la población de una ciudad y un país. Antonio Cornejo Polar, según el homenaje que se le hace en esta recopilación, es una pieza clave para poder hacer un acerca- miento a lo que ha significado la producción intelectual de Latinoamérica en los últimos cuarenta años. Es importante rescatar de este texto el interés por abrir las miradas de los lectores hacia otros ámbitos que, en oportunidades, no han sido tomados en cuen- ta de manera ferviente por algunos campos de la academia y que pueden aportar diferentes perspectivas al debate sobre la construc- ción de discursos en torno a la cultura latinoamericana.
