History was the major concentration of my first degree. I retired in 2008, after twenty years, from the Headmastership of Macarthur Anglican School, Cobbitty, NSW. I have served for a similar time on the Synod of Sydney and its Standing Committee as well as some time on Provincial and General Synods. I have an abiding interest in the affairs of the Diocese of Sydney generally and particularly in educational matters. I acknowledge Professor Geoffrey Sherington who first encouraged me to undertake research in the field of Education History and was my associate supervisor. Finally my heartfelt and loving thanks go to my wife Pam, whose enthusiasm, endless support and patience, at no little personal sacrifice, as well as her word processing skills, combined to allow me to bury myself in my study to complete the thesis. iii Abstract The role of the Church of England as an education provider in the colony of New South Wales prior to the Public Instruction Act 1880 (NSW) is well documented by education historians. Very little is written about of its role after 1880. There is an assumption generally held by education historians that following the promulgation of the various secular education acts in Australia’s colonies in the latter decades of the Nineteenth Century, the Church of England 'gave up' its schools. As a consequence it neglected the religious educational and spiritual care of the majority of its children and young people, concentrating its efforts on establishing a small number of elite grammar schools for the children of the wealthy. The thesis endeavours to test this assumption insofar as the evangelical Diocese of Sydney is concerned by researching the official documents - the Proceedings of Synod - to ascertain the Church's response to the 1880 Act during the decade of the 1880s. The role of the leaders of the Diocese and their influence on the Church's response is also examined. The research reveals that the Diocese of Sydney did not simply 'give up' its schools and concentrate on a few elite schools. Instead it undertook a concerted effort to reach as many of its children as possible with instruction in the faith, be they in Public schools, Church Schools, Grammar Schools or in Sunday Schools.     The Battle of the Styles in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure: Perpendicular, God-seeking Gothicism vs. Horizontally-extended, Secular Classicism Ariyuki Kondo Thomas Hardy’s Architectural Career This paper intends to examine the ways in which the inner worlds of the characters in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure are depicted through the use of metaphors to reveal the antagonism between Victorian Gothic Revivalism and Victorian Classicism: the Battle of the Styles which Hardy himself had witnessed in his younger days. When Hardy, the son of a stonemason and local builder, first became interested in architecture, ecclesiastical architecture was one of the major areas of work in the building profession. Hardy first became involved in this aspect of architecture in 1856, when he started working for a Dorset-based ecclesiological architect, John Hicks, who designed and restored churches mainly in the Gothic Revival style. In April 1862 Hardy, carrying two letters of recommendation, moved to London. One of these two letters was addressed to Benjamin Ferrey (Pl. 1) and the other to Arthur Blomfield (Pl. 2). Hardy first visited Ferrey. Ferrey had been a pupil of the late Augustus Charles Pugin and knew Pugin’s son, Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (Pl. 3) who died in 1852 at the age of 40, very well. Ferrey is mostly remembered today for his biography of the Pugins, published in 1861, not long before Hardy’s first visit to him. Ferrey must have been a very well-known architect to Hardy, for it was Ferrey who had designed the Town Hall in Dorchester.

However, the second decade of the twenty-first century in Australia brings its own unique challenges. The Diocese of Sydney is presently served by an archbishop and five assistant bishops who operate in a context in which the diocesan synod and its standing committee have a role in the government of the Diocese and its churches, and where there are complex yet real relationships with those outside the Diocese including the Province of New South Wales, the Anglican Church of Australia, the Anglican Communion, and entities such as GAFCON and the Global South.

    Blain Biographical Directory of Anglican clergy in the Diocese of Honolulu 1862-1902 The ‘Reformed Catholic Church of Hawai’i’ began with the consecration of the first bishop of Honolulu, Thomas Nettleship STALEY in 1861. In 1872 the diocese became the Anglican church of Hawai’i, under his successor Alfred WILLIS the second bishop of Honolulu. On WILLIS’s resignation in 1902, the see became a missionary district within the Episcopal Church of the United States of America, and in 1969 the diocese of Hawai'i. This biographical directory lists over 50 clergy who passed through Honolulu in the first forty years of Anglican church life. Few priests were in the diocese of Honolulu more than a year or two. Many biographies reveal visionary hopes and bitter disappointments. Several lives are shadowy to the point of invisibility. At the end of the sections in the biographies, bracketed numbers indicate the sources of preceding information. The Blain Biographical Directory of Anglican Clergy in the South Pacific (which includes some 1,650 priests) may be found on the Kinder library website, in Auckland New Zealand. These bracketed numbers are there given bibliographical substance in a document accompanying the biographical directory. The compiler points out that this directory has been researched and compiled without funding. I am very grateful to the hundreds of correspondents and agencies who have voluntarily assisted me on this work since the early 1990s. The compiler welcomes corrections and additions sent to [email protected]. Such will be incorporated in the master-copy held in Wellington New Zealand, and in due course in the online version of this directory with Project Canterbury.

    Blain Biographical Directory of Anglican clergy in the diocese of Honolulu 1862-1902 final edition (2012, corrected 2018) The “Reformed Catholic Church of Hawai’i” began with the consecration of the first bishop of Honolulu, Thomas Nettleship STALEY in 1861. In 1872 the diocese became the “Anglican Church of Hawai’i”, under his successor Alfred WILLIS the second and final bishop of Honolulu. On WILLIS’s resignation in 1902, the see became the missionary district of Honolulu within the Episcopal Church of the United States of America, and in 1969 the diocese of Hawai'i. This biographical directory lists some 58 clergy who passed through the diocese of Honolulu in the first forty years of Anglican church life. Few priests were in the diocese more than a year or two. Several lives are evasive shadows. The Honolulu church initiative confronted a complex changing society in Hawai’i. Their royal patrons and the indigenous Polynesian people were pressed aside as the commercial interests of North American (and European) planters drove all before them. Their plantations were worked by imported Chinese and Japanese workers among whom the diocese did begin work. The inadequacies of diocesan leadership and the crippling lack of funding overwhelmed quixotic hopes, leaving a divided and worn Anglican remnant to be rescued by the Episcopal church of the USA in 1902. While these entries were compiled from the best evidence available, the compiler had no access to primary documents in Honolulu.
