Timeline - May 1940
TIMELINE - MAY 1940 As the month begins the battle for Norway continues. Just to recap, German naval and ground forces had begun invading both Norway and Denmark on 9th April. Denmark had quickly capitulated but Norway had resisted. British forces were sent to Andalsnes on 18th April to 1st May, Namsos on 16th April to 3rd May, and Narvik from 15th April to 8th June. They were joined by Norwegian, French and Polish forces. But as May begins the evacuation of Allied troops from some of these areas is already underway and nearing completion. With the failure of the campaign for central Norway attention shifts to Narvik in the far north, strategically vital to the Germans for the shipping of iron ore from Sweden. 1 On 2nd May German troops reached Andalsnes, and on the following day Norwegian troops south of Trondheim surrendered to the Germans. The allied evacuation at Namsos was completed, but German aircraft located part of the evacuation fleet and sank the destroyers Afridi and Bison. The Bison was a French destroyer and she was the first to be sunk with the loss of 136 of her crew. The surviving crew were then picked up by the Afridi. But when that ship came under attack a further 35 of her crew were lost, along with 53 of the Afridi’s crew and 13 soldiers - the only casualties among the whole force of 12,000 troops evacuated from Åndalsnes and Namsos On 5th May the Battle of Hegra Fortress ended when the fortress capitulated. The Germans had now achieved complete victory on Norway’s southern front. -

Winston Churchill ended first broadcast to the nation as Prime Minister, on 19 May 1940 with the following words: “Today is Trinity Sunday. Centuries ago words were written to be a call and a spur to the faithful servants of Truth and Justice: ‘Arm yourselves, and be ye men of valour, and be in readiness for the conflict; for it is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar. As the Will of God is in Heaven, even so let it be.” The text he quoted to rouse his people was from 1 Maccabees 3:58-60, a book confined to the English Apocrypha since the Reformation. -

CHURCHILL’S WARTIME SPEECHES: 1940-1941 I. INTRODUCTION This lesson is intended for use in a unit on World War II. It will focus on the time period from May 10, 1940 to June 21, 1941 – the time period beginning with Winston Churchill becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, encompassing the time period when France fell and Britain fought the Germans essentially alone, and ending just before the German invasion of the USSR on June 22, 1941. The lesson will provide students the opportunity to learn about this time period, to read several of Winston Churchill’s speeches from this time period, to discuss the context of these speeches, and to analyze their importance in contributing to the formation of a national British consensus to continue to fight the Germans. II. GUIDING QUESTION How did Winston Churchill, through his speeches, contribute to the formation of a collective British resolve to continue fighting during the critical time period when Britain was alone in fighting Germany? III. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Prior to beginning this lesson, students should be able to: A. Identify the policies by which the British Government attempted to pursue peace in the 1930’s, the leaders who advocated these policies, and the reasons for the failure of these policies. B. Provide a basic history of both Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, including their goals in ruling Germany from 1933. C. Evaluate the role of Winston Churchill, a British Member of Parliament who held no position in the Government, in warning that the combination of British policies and German policies would be disastrous for the continent. -

Unit Topic World War II Winston Churchill (Speeches) Fall of France and Battle of Britain Lesson Plan Aim To identify the need for United States involvement in World War II by analyzing Winston Churchill’s speeches. Rationale Often overlooked in World War II is the struggle to fight Germany prior to U.S. entry and the perseverance of Winston Churchill to keep fighting in the face of near defeat. Churchill is an important person for students to know because of his ability to lead with strength, to speak with valor, and to give hope to his people when doubt was consuming them. Before evaluating whether or not the United States should have joined World War II, the time they joined, and the way they provided aid prior to official entry, it is crucial to know what the circumstances were in the fight against the Axis Powers from the beginning of the war. Students will read Churchill’s speeches to learn about his incredible leadership and to make an emotional connection to the time. Learning in a personal way will help students have empathy for the leaders and their people during this devastating period in history. Student Learning Objectives Students will be able assess the need for United States involvement in World War II by analyzing Winston Churchill’s speeches. SYLLABUS Politics 810-01 The Statesmanship of Winston Churchill Instructor Information: Larry P. Arnn Email: [email protected] Office hours: Grouped by appointment. Please contact Victoria Bergen ([email protected]) in my office to schedule appointments and Kyle Murnen ([email protected]) regarding course questions. Moss Hall, 4th Floor (607-2301) Objective This course examines the statesmanship of Sir Winston S. Churchill. It will attempt to reveal the nature of statesmanship in principle and the special features it presents in a modern liberal state. It will examine the problems inherent in this kind of regime as Churchill understood them. It will show how Churchill addressed these problems through a long career. In the end we will try to see how the life of prudential action is important to the survival of a constitutional democracy, as this was understood by a prudential actor of significance, longevity, and insight. Class Meetings: Class time: Monday 2:30-5:15 p.m. (alternate classes typically scheduled on Fridays). Reference the class meeting schedule for tentative make-up dates this semester. Location: Broadlawn (189 Hillsdale Street – back dining room). Enter the house from the driveway thru the door closest to the garage. Kendall, Room 233 will serve as the alternate classroom when Broadlawn is unavailable due to an event. Texts: Sir Martin Gilbert, Churchill: A Life Readings available on Blackboard, which will constitute the main texts for the course. Other Resources Available: The college has purchased the personal historical archive of Sir Martin Gilbert. The parts of it relating to Churchill are here on the campus.
