Prof. Dr. Charles Gates December 2006 This study has aimed to investigate the problem of interpreting the nature and influence of Byzantine ships and shipping in the later Middle ages. Maritime transport activities and ships or shipbuilding of the Byzantines during the later Medieval age, between 1204-1453, have never been adequately revealed. The textual, pictorial, and archaeological evidence of Byzantine maritime activities is collected in this study. This limited evidence is evaluated in order to gain a better understanding of Byzantine maritime activities such as shipbuilding and maritime commerce. The impact of these activities in the Late Medieval age is discussed.     ABOUT THIS CRITICAL DIMENSION DATA FILE There are databases that record critical dimensions of production sailboats that handicappers may use to identify yachts that race and to help them determine a sailing number to score competitive events. These databases are associated with empirical or performance handicapping systems worldwide and are generally available from those organizations via internet access. This data file contains dimensions for some, but not all, production boats reported to USPHRF since 1995. These data may be used to support performance handicapping by affiliated USPHRF fleets. There are many more boats in databases that sailmakers and handicappers possess. The USPHRF Technical Subcommittee and the US SAILING Offshore Office have several. This Adobe Acrobat file contains data mostly supplied by USPHRF affiliated fleets, a few manufacturers, naval architects, and others making contributions to database. While this data file is generally helpful, it does contain errors of omission and inaccuracies that are left to users to rectify by sending corrections to USPHRF by way of the data form below.     Pacific Seacraft 34 Overview & History The Pacific Seacraft 34 could be considered the encore act to a very successful Pacific Seacraft ​ ​ Crealock 37. Back in 1980, when Pacific Seacraft had freshly acquired the molds of the ​ Crealock 37 from Cruising Consultants and continued its steady production, the company approached designer Bill Crealock to work on a smaller sibling. This new design became known as the Pacific Seacraft 34 (“Voyagemaker”) and it was introduced in 1984. Incidentally, this was the start of a long and very successful association between Pacific Seacraft and Bill Crealock. It’s not surprising then that the boats share similar graceful lines and appearance. As with the 37, the 34 is focused on safety and comfort. Overall a tough boat with a seakindly nature very well suited for blue-water passage making for couples. Boat Configuration The Pacific Seacraft 34 has relatively large overhanging bow, a handsome sheer line, which ends with a traditional canoe stern. Under the waterline is a relatively long cruising fin keel with a very handy draft of 4’11 in standard trim that will get you into places that other boats wont (there’s also an option of a “very” shoal draft 4’1″ option). The rudder is skeg-hung. The rig is of cutter configuration, all control lines are feed back into the safety of the cockpit. The cockpit is small, which some would say is a traditional blue-water design feature to advert the risk of pooping (flooding from a following sea), hence don’t be surprised if it gets cramped quickly as the people count climbs.
