Vice-Chancellor Hyderabad – 500 046. From the Vice-Chancellor’s Desk It is an honour to present the Annual Report on the working of the University during the year 2011-2012. The Report aptly reflects the sustained pace of growth and development of the University during this year. The year also witnessed several international and national workshops, conferences and seminars where speakers from different parts of the world presented their findings. The student strength in various disciplines this year (2011-12) stood at 4875, out of which over 44.34% are research scholars pursuing Ph.D. and M. Phil. / M. Tech. programmes. Women students constitute 34.70% of the total strength. 8.61% of the students are from reserved (SC/ST/PH) categories. Besides, more than 983 students were enrolled in 15 P.G. Diploma courses. The University’s Study in India Programme (SIP) aims at providing an opportunity for foreign students to experience and study not only the various aspects of Indian society, history and culture but also sciences and information technology and in the process creates an international environment on the University campus. The Programme emphasizes heritage, continuity and change in India. A number of interdisciplinary courses were offered to participants from North American and European universities. The University of Hyderabad can rightly boast of a highly qualified and internationally renowned faculty. Our faculty, numbering 399, produced over 1215 research publications including 63 books during the year. They also contributed to the award of 133 Ph.D., 159 M.Phil. 167 M. Tech. and 775 postgraduate degrees. The faculty earned research funding for the individual research projects numbering 440 with a total outlay of over rupees 112.65 crores from various national and international agencies. During the period of report 61 projects worth Rs. 33 crores were sanctioned to the University. These projects supported 92 research scholars. Several consultancy and industry sponsored projects were also undertaken through MoUs. Over the year our faculty members have been honoured with several national and international fellowships and awards of leading academies in India and abroad like the INSA, New Dehi, NASI Allahabad, Emeritus Professor, Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Young Women Scientist vii beforePages.indd 7 2/20/2013 6:59:15 PM prize in Physics and Mathematics, N. Mitra, Ph.D. (Rochester) Zweitgutachter: Professor Dr. Dietmar Rothermund vorgelegt von: Seyedhossein Zarhani Dezember 2015 Acknowledgement The completion of this thesis would not have been possible without the help of many individuals. I am grateful to all those who have provided encouragement and support during the whole doctoral process, both learning and writing. First and foremost, my deepest gratitude and appreciation goes to my supervisor, Professor Subrata K. Mitra, for his guidance and continued confidence in my work throughout my doctoral study. I could not have reached this stage without his continuous and warm-hearted support. I would especially thank Professor Mitra for his inspiring advice and detailed comments on my research. I have learned a lot from him. I am also thankful to my second supervisor Professor Ditmar Rothermund, who gave me many valuable suggestions at different stages of my research. Moreover, I would also like to thank Professor Markus Pohlmann and Professor Reimut Zohlnhöfer for serving as my examination commission members even at hardship. I also want to thank them for letting my defense be an enjoyable moment, and for their brilliant comments and suggestions. Special thanks also go to my dear friends and colleagues in the department of political science, South Asia Institute. My research has profited much from their feedback on several occasions, and I will always remember the inspiring intellectual exchange in this interdisciplinary environment.

  • Manjul Bhargava
The Work of Manjul Bhargava Manjul Bhargava's work in number theory has had a profound influence on the field. A mathematician of extraordinary creativity, he has a taste for simple problems of timeless beauty, which he has solved by developing elegant and powerful new methods that offer deep insights. When he was a graduate student, Bhargava read the monumental Disqui- sitiones Arithmeticae, a book about number theory by Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855). All mathematicians know of the Disquisitiones, but few have actually read it, as its notation and computational nature make it difficult for modern readers to follow. Bhargava nevertheless found the book to be a wellspring of inspiration. Gauss was interested in binary quadratic forms, which are polynomials ax2 +bxy +cy2, where a, b, and c are integers. In the Disquisitiones, Gauss developed his ingenious composition law, which gives a method for composing two binary quadratic forms to obtain a third one. This law became, and remains, a central tool in algebraic number theory. After wading through the 20 pages of Gauss's calculations culminating in the composition law, Bhargava knew there had to be a better way. Then one day, while playing with a Rubik's cube, he found it. Bhargava thought about labeling each corner of a cube with a number and then slic- ing the cube to obtain 2 sets of 4 numbers. Each 4-number set naturally forms a matrix. A simple calculation with these matrices resulted in a bi- nary quadratic form. From the three ways of slicing the cube, three binary quadratic forms emerged.

  • Platform for the Poor (Interview of P
Platform for the Poor (Interview of P. Sainath) By Ashok Mahadevan ill FOR A NEWSPAPER reporter who normally keeps a low profile, Palagummi Sainath was unusually visible in the media just before he talked to Reader's Digest. A fortnight earlier, he had received the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award for journalism, literature and the creative communication arts. Then he sparked off a row after criticizing Union Textiles Minister Shanker Sinh Vaghela and Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for disparaging Maharashtra's cotton farmers—a charge both politicians predictably denied. In fact, we were lucky to find Sainath in his Mumbai home because he travels up to 10 months a year, chronicling the travails of India's poor. He's been doing this for nearly a decade and a half, and his reports reveal a country far different from the "India Shining" of the mainstream media. The economic reforms that began in 1991, Sainath says, while bringing unprecedented prosperity to the middle and upper classes have only deepened the misery of the poor. Sainath, 50, comes from a distinguished family—his grandfather, V. V. Giri, was the fourth President of India. After a master's in history from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Sainath became a journalist in 1980. In 1993, thanks to a fellowship from The Times of India, he investigated living conditions in the country's ten poorest districts. The articles he wrote during this period were collected in a best-selling book called Everybody loves a Good Drought. Sainath, now rural affairs editor of The Hindu, continues to specialize in writing about the poor because, as he puts it, "I felt that if the Indian press was covering the top five percent, I should cover the bottom five percent." Apart from the Magsaysay, Sainath has won many other awards for his work.
