OUP UNCORRECTED PROOF – FIRSTPROOFS, Mon Dec 07 2015, NEWGEN 3 Vajrayāna Traditions in Nepal Todd Lewis and Naresh Man Bajracarya Introduction The existence of tantric traditions in the Kathmandu Valley dates back at least a thousand years and has been integral to the Hindu– Buddhist civi- lization of the Newars, its indigenous people, until the present day. This chapter introduces what is known about the history of the tantric Buddhist tradition there, then presents an analysis of its development in the pre- modern era during the Malla period (1200–1768 ce), and then charts changes under Shah rule (1769–2007). We then sketch Newar Vajrayāna Buddhism’s current characteristics, its leading tantric masters,1 and efforts in recent decades to revitalize it among Newar practitioners. This portrait,2 especially its history of Newar Buddhism, cannot yet be more than tentative in many places, since scholarship has not even adequately documented the textual and epigraphic sources, much less analyzed them systematically.3 The epigraphic record includes over a thousand inscrip- tions, the earliest dating back to 464 ce, tens of thousands of manuscripts, the earliest dating back to 998 ce, as well as the myriad cultural traditions related to them, from art and architecture, to music and ritual. The religious traditions still practiced by the Newars of the Kathmandu Valley represent a unique, continuing survival of Indic religions, including Mahāyāna- Vajrayāna forms of Buddhism (Lienhard 1984; Gellner 1992). Buddhism in Nepal State of the Art, 1995 Dr. Corneille Jest In Nepal, besides the birth place of Lord Buddha, several sites are considered sacred to the Buddhists, especially in the valley of Kathmandu and in the high valleys of the Himalayan range. Culturally and historically, Nepal refers to the valley of Kathmandu, located South of the Himalaya. The valley, round in shape is drained by small streams gathering in the sacred river Bagmati. Tradition connects the early history of the valley with the Indian Emperor Ashoka, who spread Buddhism and one can assume that Buddhists established themselves around the time of the Christian era. Stupas still existing mark the oldest settlements and the city of Patan can be considered one of the oldest Buddhist cities (Snellgrove 1957). Since 1959, and a consequence of the political events which happened in China, one has witnessed a tremendous development of Mahayana (Tibetan) Buddhism in the valley of Kathmandu. We would like to analyse briefly this development. The valley of Kathmandu has been for centuries the major link between India and Central Asia, a trade route along which not only goods but also ideas transited (Lewis 1989). In 1959 only one important Mahayana monastery was located on the top of Swayambhu hill. The history of this monastery is closely linked with Tibet and Buthan. Two smaller monasteries were located in Bodnath/ Baudha, the temple known as “temple of the Chine Lama”, and a monastery built by a Mongolian lama of the gelug-pa order, Sog-po Rinpoche. A few ermitages were located in Pharping to the South of the valley. -

His spiritual guidance inspires millions of followers and practitioners globally. The teachings of the Buddha, who throughout his life preached about integrity and morality, could be valuable in promoting ethics and integrity and could also play an influencing role in the current drive of the Nepalese government to create a prosperous nation. Thus, understanding the perceptions of the development professionals and the intellectuals of Nepal towards this system of philosophy would be critical to understand not only the current status of Buddhist teachings in Nepal but also how this system of thought could be diverted for the purposes of nation- building. To understand the existing knowledge and perceptions of the professionals, an exploratory survey was carried out in October 2018 with questionnaires developed using Google Forms. The link was shared among 250 professionals and the first 100 responses received online were tabulated and analyzed. Homa rituals in Newar Buddhism In the Kathmandu Valley, Newar Buddhism, preserves the tradition of Indian Buddhist Tantrism to a great extent. In Newar Buddhism, puja (offeringworship) and homa (fire offering ritual) are popular. Homa rituals are performed in order to remove obstacles and diseases. On the second of August, 1994, a homa ritual was performed at the house of a Newar Buddhist priest, Rev. Ratnakajee Vajracharya. In that year, his first and second sons were married. In the Kathmandu Valley, Buddhist priests perform several kinds of homa rituals such as Mamsahutihoma and Sirahutihoma. The homa performed in 1994 was called Sahasrahutihoma (one thousandoffering homa ritual), which is very popular among Newar Buddhists. Sahasrahutihoma is also performed for other occasions such as the construction of a stupa or the celebration of someone becoming seventy-seven years old, and so on. The homa that I observed began at 8 o'clock A. M. and continued for three hours. At that time, the priest performed the ritual according to the Sanskrit text named Kala sarcanaho- inavidhi. 2. Kalasarcanahoinavidhi There are several Sanskrit manuscripts and a few printed editions of Sahasrahutihoma. The titles of the text are various: Kalasarcanahornavidhi, Sahasrahutihoinavidhi, and Ya- jhavidhana. The content of each text differs. In most texts, mantras are written in Sanskrit and explanations are written in Newari. The text Kalasarcanahomavidhi, which was used in the homa in 1994, was edited by Newar Buddhist priest Rev. -

The main objective of the study is to analyze the historical importance of Boudhanath Stupa and Kasyap Buddha. Comparative Historical Analysis (CHA) method has been applied to analyze the collected facts and information. The story of Nalanika (Nalanika Jatak Katha) claims that Shringa (Having a horn in head) sage was the grandson of Kassap and son of Vibhandak sages was born in Mahalaxmi municipality, Lankuri Bhanjyang Shringa Rishi Ashram. Therefore, Kassap Buddha had visited and settled few times in the municipality. Thus Baudha Stupa – made by relics of Kassap Budha- Baudha Kathmandu has clear relation with Shringa Rishi Ashram of Lalitpur. At this time penance of sage Shringa, Sakka -king of heaven was frightened and to break penance of the sage he had sent a nymph(Urbashi) or princess of the kingdom, in Shringa Rishi’s Ashram. The nymph/ princess was called as Nalanika. She had very long discussion with Risya Sringa about love, relation and importance of family. The discussion is called Nalanika Jatak in Buddhist philosophy. But Shringa Rishi was very strong in his values and ideologies. She was not able to break his penance so in Buddha’s age, she became Yasodhara –Spouse of Lord Buddha.
