    North York Moors National Park North York Moors National Park Celebrating Celebrating 0YEARS 61952 - 2012 0YEARS 61952 - 2012 historic environment review Fi eldWork records World War tWo reMaIns news from the north York Moors natIonal Park authorItY 2012 Recently recorded by fieldwork in Hambleton Plantation, prior to felling and replanting operations, has been a series of slit trenches dating from the Second World War. These were first recognised in 2010 when one was noted as having been dug alongside the prehistoric Cleave Dyke which runs through the plantation. When the area was checked on aerial photographs dating from May 1940, a series of faint marks – previously considered to be possible scratches on the old photo negatives – were recognised as revealing an extensive complex of slit trenches, apparently cut to protect the gliding field just to the south (now home of the Yorkshire Gliding Club) in case of invasion. Further slit trenches were picked up on the south side of the gliding field by the English Heritage survey of Roulston Scar hillfort (which encloses the main part of the gliding field) in 2001, although these were interpreted as defensive positions for firing into the gliding field in case of an enemy landing there. However, the newly discovered examples have clear banks which appear to indicate that they were to provide protection against an attack from the north, although another possibility is that they represent practice works dug to give recruits experience and help make them ready for combat. Scotch Corner chapel 5 The North York Moors National Park contains thousands of archaeological sites which represent the activities of human beings in the area from the end of the last Ice Age John Collier collection 5 (c. 12,000 years ago) to important industrial landscapes of the 17th to early 20th Archaeology of the North York centuries and the concrete and steel bunkers of the Cold War – in fact some 32% of Moors: the human value 6-7 the nationally important protected archaeological sites (Scheduled Monuments) for Publications update 6-7 the Yorkshire and Humber region can be found in the National Park. Buildings also form an important part of the historic environment and the Stone trods 8 National Park contains 9% of the regional total of Listed (protected) Buildings. The Archaeology dayschool 9 National Park maintains a detailed index of all the known archaeological sites and nymnpA volunteer group 9 important buildings in the form of the Historic Environment Record (HER), which currently contains over twenty thousand records.

    Item 7 North York Moors National Park Authority Planning Committee 14 January 2016 Forest Design Plan Consultations – Boltby Forest (FDP 36) 1. Purpose of the Report 1.1 To report the Forest Design Plan (FDP) revision to Members for information and comment. 2. Background 2.1 Forest Enterprise (FE) produces a strategic plan for each of its larger forest areas which sets out the longer term aims and objectives, as well as more detailed management proposals for a ten year period. The Authority has been provided with a copy of the draft revised plan for Boltby Forest covering years 2015 to 2024. The area covered is shown on Plan 1 (Appendix 1). 2.2 The National Park Authority is a statutory consultee on the FDP. The public consultation period has not yet started but is expected to be open until the end of January. Once complete the plan will be due for approval (with or without amendments) by Forest Services (the regulatory part of the Forestry Commission). 2.3 FDP’s consist of a written statement of the main management issues and are supported by a series of plans which illustrate the main felling and restocking proposals, as well as other background plans which have guided the management options being proposed. With the electronic report presentation format it is now practical to reproduce all the design plan documentation which is located in Appendix 2. This is the draft plan and any variations in the final version will be reported to members at the meeting. Any queries on the presentation of information in these documents can be made to officers prior to the meeting.
