ANOTHER VIEW Europe’s war on American success
merica’s high-tech colossi dominate the globe: Amazon, Uber, Apple, Microsoft, Lyft, Intel, A Facebook, Google, Instagram, eBay, Twitter, Lyft and others were all made in America. Europe’s tech companies, by contrast, are puny. Only Spotify, a Swedish music-streaming app, has made much of splash globally. The reasons for America’s tech dominance are hardly secrets — a healthy respect and appreciation of entre- preneurship, higher education that attracts students from all over the world, and abundant access to venture capital reserves. Above all, the political culture, most of the time, promotes business rather than punishes it. It’s different in the Old World. Authorities there tend to see successful businesses as a threat, a problem to be tamed, or at the very least sources of revenue to be tapped. More so if those businesses are native to America. Only last week the European Union levied a multibil- lion-dollar fine against California-based Google. The EU ordered Google to pony up 4.34 billion Euros, about $5.1 billion at current exchange rates. There’s an unrelated $2.7 billion fine against Google last year. The EU has fined Microsoft, Facebook and Intel on several occa- sions. The $5.1 billion fine against Google is the largest EU fine so far. PGA TOUR Outdrive the competition Lake City’s Barber has hot start, finishes 12th place at Barbasol Championship
By ERIC JACKSON [email protected]
After a strong finish in the tourna- ment’s final round, going 17 under with even par 72, Blayne Barber fin- ished tied for 12th at the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky on Monday. Barber, a Lake City native, was on the verge of his first PGA Tour victo- ry when he opened the tournament on a hot start – in fact, it was one of the best first rounds of his career. He tied his best opening round (RSM 2017) with a 6 under outing. The former Columbia star followed up with an impressive boogey-free third round which resulted in a score of 63 (9 under). That was good enough to place him 17 under on the leaderboard, finishing the day tied for fifth place. A strong couple of rounds for the former Auburn standout, who set new personal best this weekend. “That’s my best stretch ever, I think,” he said. “That’s probably the most under par in two rounds I’ve ever shot in my whole career.” Eventual winner Troy Merritt, along with five others, entered the rain-delayed final round tied for first place while Barber joined Sam Ryder and Billy Horschel at fifth. “Just have to stay aggressive on this golf course,” Barber said. “There are a lot of opportunities. It’s soft. Just hope we can keep the weather away and get there and have some fun.” According to PGA.com, Barber hit 8 of 14 fairways and 12 of 18 greens in regulation for the 17 under fin- ish (T12). On his par-4 15th, Barber missed his par putt from five feet out, finishing with a 3-putt bogey. He finished strong however with a 19-foot putt for birdie on the par-5 17th hole. Barber’s finish this week marks his best of 2018 and his third top-25 fin- ish of the year. He continues to roll as the PGA Tour season enters its final stretch. The next stop on the Tour is the RBC Canadian Open which begins this week. The Barracuda COURTESY Championship in Reno begins the Lake City native Blayne Barber hits his tee shot on the first hole during a continuation of the final round of the Barbasol following week.
