OUR OPINION BEYOND WALLS, PART II Lynn should be T’d off The city of Lynn needs the Blue Line extension. Why can’t anybody at the state level understand that? The simple unalterable truth is that Lynn is never going to reach its potential without rapid transit linking it to Bos- ton. This has been proven conclusively through research, debates, studies, and the eye test: you have noticed the empty MBTA parking garage, right? Commuter rail doesn’t work for Lynn. And until state of cials, including the governor next door, realize it, we are all just spitting into the wind. Extending the Blue Line to Lynn is one of the topics discussed in the Massa- chusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s broad-sweeping, big-thinking, just-re- leased “Focus40” report. But anyone who is ready to run down to the commuter rail garage and buy a Charlie Card should give the 68-page report at least a passing glance. PEOPLE, PLACES, AND THINGS ARBLEHEAD MARKS VINTAGE ASSACHUSETTS NEON SIGNS M MARBLEHEAD — Beginning Saturday, Aug. 11, vis- itors to the Marblehead Arts Association will be able to view a unique series of paintings by Marblehead native Kristen Nyberg. "Modern Moonlight" celebrates the beauty of vintage neon signs and raises the question of how these elements from the past enhance the spaces we inhabit in the present. Nyberg said the exhibit name is taken from the 1972 Jonathan Richman song, “Roadrunner,” which declares “I’m in love with Massachusetts and the neon when it’s cold outside,” extolling the joys of driving around suburban Boston “… with the radio on at night. And me in love with modern moonlight.” Depicting various Massachusetts locations, some iconic and some overlooked, Nyberg’s images make an argument that in a world overwhelmed by rede- velopment, we should do more to preserve the vintage signage and architecture that connect us to our rich visual past. "I began documenting vintage signage in the area in 2003 and have had to mark an increasing number of my photo les as “Gone,” said Nyberg. “Some view these signs as outdated or kitschy, but they represent anoth- er era in design. Each one is made by hand, and neon bending is a dying art. I applaud Dave Waller, who has single-handedly saved so many great vintage pieces from destruction. His collection can be seen as part of the Beyond Walls initiative in Lynn and this summer’s installation on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. I’m not arguing that the Back Bay should adopt a Vegas veneer, but asking folks to think twice before razing older façades to make way for faceless condos. How boring will our streets be if all the noirish mystery and roman- tic glow of these pieces are extinguished?” The "Modern Moonlight" exhibit will run from Aug. 11 to Sept. 23, with an opening reception Thursday, Aug. 16, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Marblehead Arts Associ- IMAGE | KRISTEN NYGREN IMAGE | KRISTEN NYGREN ation, 8 Hooper St. For additional information, go to http://www.nybergdesign.com/modern-moonlight/ or “Cocktails Kenmore,” a painting by Kristen “6:30AM,” a painting by Kristen Nygren. http://www.marbleheadarts.org/ Nygren. Now scientists think they have a glimmer of an answer. The 7th Annual They've long known that the blue tint comes from traces of boron in the diamond. But the element is mostly found near the Earth's surface, not deep down where diamonds are typically created. Researchers scrutinized 46 blue diamonds, studying imperfections in the gems for clues. Just 1 out of 200,000 diamonds are blue. Like all diamonds, they are made when carbon comes under intense pressure and extreme heat deep inside the Earth. SPORTS B THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2018 Another successful Parks & Rec basketball season turns to title games By Mike Alongi ITEM STAFF LYNN — As the summer begins to wind down, so does the Lynn Parks and Recreation Summer Basketball League. After a fun- lled July that saw over 250 kids come out to compete across the three age divisions, it’s all been whittled down to six teams. Now, one game stands between each team and city-wide bragging rights for the rest of the year. “The kids are all really excited about these championship games, it’s why most of them come out to play,” said tournament director Fred Hogan. “The bragging rights are a pretty big deal for these kids.” There will be three championship games played Thursday evening, all at Marian Gardens (provided the weather cooper- ates). In the event of rain, the games will be moved indoors to Marshall Middle School. But Hogan and the players hope to get on the court at Marian Gardens, where a brand-new re nished ITEM FILE PHOTO basketball court awaits them. It was only after we got our offer that we learned from Kerry that she had played for Bean when she was at BC. We had also played many club tournaments in the area as Virginia and Pennsylvania are big when it comes to field hockey.” The twins got a relatively late start in taking up the game and didn’t pick up their first sticks until the seventh grade after Jamie Johnson, the director of the middle school program, en- couraged them to try out the sport. They fell in love with the sport, eventually discontinuing their ice hockey careers after freshman year in order to devote more time to their club team, Northeast Club Elite, currently the top-ranked team in New England. Both Barretts, who also ran indoor track, will serve as senior captains of the field hockey and girls lacrosse teams.
