Key Events Highlights During the reporting period, Norwegian Refugee Council(NRC) had started construction of the New Reception Centre at the Border between Kenya and South Sudan for the Government Refugee Agency- DRA with support from UNHCR. NRC is intervening in the sanitation sector by providing sanitation facilities both at the border and in the settlement area at Kakuma 4. So far NRC has constructed and established more than 700 pit latrines for the new arrivals. The community is mobilized and sensitive on best health and hygiene practices in the camp. As of 20th March 2014 a total of 30, 692 south Sudan asylum seekers have been pre-registered by DRA at the Kenya-south Sudan border (Nadapal) while cumulative statistics stands at 30, 692 as of 20th March as received by the Government refugee agency - Department of Refugee Affairs, in Kakuma refugee camp since the start of influx mid of December 2013, the Government refugee agency-DRA and UNHCR, WFP , IOM, UNICEF,MSF ,IRC ,WVI,NRC,LWF, NCCK ,Kenya Red Cross and other implementing partners working in the Kakuma Camp have continue to scaled-up their operations in response to the on-going influx from South Sudan The Government Registration activities for asylum seekers and refugees, have been decentralized to the camp at field post 2, in kakuma 3 near the new site ,while its registration capacity enhanced by UNHCR due to the high demand on registration, DRA is receiving more staff to provide registration and other activities in the camp. UNHCR has supported DRA with residential facilities. NRC is currently constructing these 8 residential facilities; two blocks each with four residential units. The units are near completion. Currently there are 8 residential houses near completion that have been constructed by NRC with funding from UNHCR. while pre-registration by DRA at the border-point, Nadapal is still operational. In Kakuma Camp, the WFP have establish a food distribution center at new site ,the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is assisting with provision of NFIs and Firewood, while NCCK providing temporary shelter, while WFP is providing food and distributing BP5 high energy biscuits at the border and provision of wet feeding at reception center, NRC constructing latrines, while UNICEF supporting Nutrition by providing IRC with therapeutic supplies , Plumpy Nuts, F75 and F100 and WASH Supplies , while the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is constructing sanitation facilities ,Water Tankering & trucking to the new site area Supported by UNHCR for the provision of clean water, With WVI Providing the rig to help in drilling water boreholes to avert the situation. Health partners are providing polio and measles vaccinations to children at the border (Nadapal). The polio, measles vaccination and medical screening is provided by MSF-Belgium and Ministry of Health while IRC opened a temporary clinic in Kakuma (new site) and distributing mosquito nets and providing nutrition screening , while LWF assisting with provision of services at the Reception Centre and providing Wet food/Kitchen set/blankets, while FilmAid assists in information dissemination and mass awareness, while Swisscontact NGO assists to in preparing refugee youths by conducting marketable skills trainings that last for 3-5 months, with Don Bosco providing vocational trainings and JRS supporting new arrivals at all reception centers and support individuals with special needs identified together with IRC, while Windle Trust Kenya supports temporary school established for new arrivals with UNICEF Support by providing teachers with the Kenya Red cross scaling up its operation at the camp on family re-unification and assisting families to make phone call to their families. Firewood and Energy savings stoves NRC is providing each new arrival with a bundle of firewood and each family with an energy saving stove once they get settled in the new site at Kakuma 4. With the current daily trends of arrival of asylum seekers, The Government refugee agency- DRA, UNHCR and partners expect an increase in South Sudanese population in Kakuma Camp in the near future. Need to assist the Government Refugee Department –DRA to counter the high demand for registration activities due to the on-going increasing influx from South Sudan since the eruption of conflict which has adversely forced South Sudanese to seek asylum in Kenya with many children and women arriving at high rate on daily at the border between Kenya and South Sudan. Support DRA for provision of more additional registration IT robust equipment's and printing facilities for production , registration for new asylum seekers. Support additional setting up of new arrival Shelter (waiting shed) at the registration centre to allow for a dignified reception for new asylums seekers. Support setting up a Rub-Hall at the registration centre to decongest the registration reception facilities which is currently being over-crowded.
