Cover design: design & production GmbH, Heideberg Data conversion: Best-set Typesetter Ltd., Hong Kong SPIN: 10761543 3113111- 5 4 3 2 1 - Printed on acid-free paper Preface In the last 3 decades urban ecology has developed increasingly from a scientific branch of Biology towards an interdisciplinary research field with applications in local and regional planning. Not only natural science disciplines, such as Biology, Soil Science, Hydrology, Climatology and Landscape Ecology contribute to the complex field of urban ecology, but also the humanities. Today it is clear that only a connection between the economic, cultural and social fields can lead to success in coping with the serious environmental problems of many cities world-wide. With the shift of the focal point from natural science based research to problem oriented research on the improvement of the living environment of people in cities, 'Social Sciences, Cultural Sciences, Geography and Economics gain a stronger meaning in the research field of urban ecology than was the case 20 years ago. Social Sciences and environmental problems are tightly bound together in many cities. In order to find solutions, strategies must include many different fields of expertise into account, but such inter-disciplinary measures naturally involve a high degree of complexity. Clearly, a theoretical basis is required which is oriented not only towards the national specifications of environmental and social problems and their investigation and management in the urban area, but which also takes a global view of the problems. Exchange of information and experience is required, not only between disci plines, but also between nations and cultures since many problems are caused by the inter-twining of people and the environment in urban areas. Many of these problems are no longer confined to the boundaries of the cities, but can be viewed on a regional, inter-regional and even on an international scale; some prove themselves to be comparable world-wide, and others have a clear, regional, specific meaning. Urban ecology, as a young, human-ecology oriented scientific discipline is of use with respect to world-wide problems, but it must find its own specific subject methods and theories to help solve these problems. The research department for Urban Landscapes at the UFZ-Umwelt forschungszentrum Leipzig-Halle GmbH (UFZ Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle) was set-up in 1992 and carried out research on urban ecology and urban development. VI Preface The department's initiative in 1996 to provide an international exchange of experience on the important focal points of urban ecological research was emphatically supported and subsidised through a scientific advisory board for urban ecology of the Federal Ministry for Education, Research and Technology (BMBF). The international conference on Urban Ecology took place in Leipzig from 25 th to 29th June, 1997 under the patronage of UNESCO and with support from the European Commission and the Saxonian State Ministry for Science and Arts (SMWK). The conference was seen as providing the start of a deep international discus sion over the theoretical consolidation of urban ecology and the integration of differing scientific disciplines into this complex field. Scientists, planners and politicians were approached so that their views and contributions could be inte grated into the discussion. Several points were highlighted during the conference: one of these was the postulation of good practice examples as models, another was the transferral and generalisation of practical experience. This led to the definition of the 5 main themes of the conference: - the ecological city- model for quality goals and standards, - integration of ecological, economic and social cultural bases for the improve- ment of the living environment, - land use as a tool to direct the city in an ecological direction, - ecologically acceptable mobility, - integration of nature and landscape cover - the balance between nature and culture. These themes show the range of the aspects dealt with in the conference. These extend from the discussion of political goals on the experience with integrated work, the problems with area and population growth, the environmental burdens through specific area uses and traffic, to the balance between nature and town development in view of growing urban agglomerations. 380 participants from 48 countries contributed their experience in 150 lectures in 15 workshops, in poster sessions and in many discussions. The participants agreed that the results of the conference should be made available in a general publication of the topics covered; this follows on from the existing volume. Het erogeneity in the means and ways of the portrayal, and also the differentiated views, on the same subject through different authors are not only made clear, but should also provoke further discussion. This book provides a cross section of the topics of urban ecology (oriented to the above main themes) with an international outlook; this provides a thorough overview of the subjects covered. At the end of the event the various working groups brought together the results of their dis cussions so that they directly emphasised the main focus of the conference and could point out ways for future work. I would like to express my thanks to the international evaluation committee who were kind enough to take the time to proof-read the contributions and pro vided the authors with valuable advice for the revisions. Preface VII The editor hopes that this publication will provide a contribution to the devel opment of the research field of urban ecology and initiate international discus sion in the addressed themes. • 20 on to Berlin, November-December 1943
20 On to Berlin, November-December 1943 In the four weeks following the 22/23 October raid on Kassel, Bomber Com mand attempted only one large operation, when 577 Lancasters and Halifaxes were sent to Dtisseldorf on 3/4 November 1943. Although not included in the Casablanca or Pointblank lists ,* Dtisseldorf was home to several aircraft com ponents plants and, in the view of MEW, was 'as important as Essen and Duisburg .. so far as the production of armaments and general engineering is concerned.' A raid on the city could, therefore, be justified and defended as meeting the spirit, if not the letter, of the two most recent Allied bombing directives.' Target indicators were easily seen through the ground haze, and No 6 Group crews left the target area convinced that the raid had been a success. 'During the early stages ... fires appear to have been somewhat scattered but as the attack progressed a large concentration was observed around the markers and smoke could be seen rising up to 8/rn,ooo ft. Several large explosions are reported notably at 1947 hrs, 1950 hrs, 1955 hrs, 2003 hrs. Flames were observed rising to 8/900 ft from this last explosion and the glow of fires could be seen for a considerable distance on the return journey. ' 2 Photographic reconnaissance missions mounted after the operation confirmed their opinion, as considerable damage was caused to both industrial and residential areas. Equally encouraging, while some German fighters intervened energetically, the overall 3.1 per cent and No 6 Group's 3-47 per cent loss rates were low for operations over this part of Germany, and were attributed to the successful feint attack mounted over Cologne.

  • German Expert Night Fighter Pilots
Early in the design stage of TTN, it was planned to have named German Expert counters with specific cards to show their abilities. We dropped this early on, but I did keep the counters. So, if you roll an expert for a German night fighter, feel free to exchange it for a more “personal” expert counter. Bio Information Helmut Lent (13 June 1918 – 7 October 1944) was a German night-fighter ace in World War II. Lent shot down 110 aircraft, 102 of them at night, far more than the minimum of five enemy aircraft required for the title of "ace". Manfred Meurer (8 September 1919- 22 January 1944) was a German Luftwaffe military aviator during World War II, a night fighter ace credited with 65 aerial victories claimed in 130 combat missions making him the fifth most successful night fighter pilot in the history of aerial warfare. Gunther Radusch (11 November 1912- 29 July 1988} was a German pilot in the German Luftwaffe during World War II. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves of Nazi Germany. Radusch is credited with 65 aerial victories. Gerhard Ferdinand Otto Raht (6 June 1920- 11 January 1977) was a German Luftwaffe military aviator during World War II, a night fighter ace credited with 58 aerial victories claimed in 171 combat missions making him the tenth most successful night fighter pilot in the history of aerial warfare. All of his victories were claimed over the Western Front in Defense of the Reich missions against the Royal Air Force's (RAF) Bomber Command.

  • My Opposition
MY OPPOSITION This is a truly unique account of Nazi Germany at war and of one man’s struggle against totalitarianism. A mid-level official in a provincial town, Friedrich Kellner kept a secret diary from 1939 to 1945, risking his life to record Germany’s path to dictatorship and genocide and to protest his countrymen’s complicity in the regime’s brutalities. Just one month into the war he is aware that Jews are marked for extermination and later records how soldiers on leave spoke openly about the mass murder of Jews and the murder of POWs; he also documents the Gestapo’s merciless rule at home from euthanasia campaigns against the handicapped and mentally ill to the execution of anyone found listening to foreign broadcasts. This essential testimony of everyday life under the Third Reich is accompanied by a foreword by Alan Steinweis and the remarkable story of how the diary was brought to light by Robert Scott Kellner, Friedrich’s grandson. Robert Scott Kellner discovered his grandfather’s diary in 1960 and has worked tirelessly to bring it to the attention of the world through exhibits at the Dwight D. Eisenhower and George H. W. Bush Presidential Libraries, a documentary film screened at the United Nations, and the publication of a complete edition of the diary in German and abridgments in Russian and Polish. Machi: Neighborhood and Small Town. The foundation for Urban Transformation in Japan Carola Hein In 1854, American navy ships under Commodore Matthew Perry appeared off the shores of Japan and pressured the formerly secluded nation into accepting a treaty that included opening some ports to American ships and the beginning of trading. i With this opening to outside influences, Japanese professionals began to study—among other subjects— modernizing European and American cities in search of models to implement at home. ii When they applied new principles, Japanese practitioners tweaked the original ideas to make them fit their own changing cultural backgrounds, local needs, experiences, and practice. I argue that one element in their particular reading of foreign form was and continues to be their understanding of urban space in terms of neighborhoods and small towns, both of which are called machi in Japanese.

In Memory of Thomas M. A. Burgess, Sergeant Navigator of Avro 683 Lancaster MkIIIb ED668 DX-Y Thomas Mountford Adie BURGESS Sergeant 1389310 57 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Died 13th June 1943 Age 20 This document tells the story of Sergeant Thomas Mountford Adie Burgess, my great uncle, who flew as a navigator with Bomber Command during the last war. There are six other men in this story; they are of course, the crew of ED668. Although I know very little about them, I would like to acknowledge their courage and sacrifice. The story of these seven brave young men is not unique; it is representative of thousands of similar stories. Young men who came from all over the empire who were lost without trace. As I child I simply knew that ‘Monts’ as he was known was killed whilst flying in bombers and that his name appears on the Royal Air Force Memorial at Runnymede, Surrey. It was not until I started to investigate in July 1999 that I discovered all the information contained here. I hope that these few pages will give you an insight into what had to be endured by the men of Bomber Command. Researching this story has certainly made appreciate the sacrifice that Monts made to ensure the relative peace that we have all enjoyed so much for the last 62 years. Matt Leeding Personal History Thomas Mountford Adie Burgess was born on 2nd September 1922 in Crawley, Sussex, son of William and Edith Maud Burgess. Monts was born the brother to his siblings Betty, Della and William.
