church of jesus christ of latterlatterdayday saints began settling the rocky mountain wilderness that would eventually be known as utah in july of 1847 having been driven first from ohio then from missouri and later from illinois the mormonsM armonsormons finally sought sanctuary in the unclaimed regions of the western frontier almost from its inception on april 6 1830 in fayette new york the church had sent missionaries to preach the restored gospel throughout the united states canada and england however after establishing a permanent settlement in the great basin missionary efforts were intensified and new missions were opened throughout the world at general conference in october 1849 thirty five yearoldyear old lorenzo snow a newly ordained member of the twelve apostles was called to establish an LDS mission 1 in italy and wherever else the spirit should direct it took elder snow and joseph toronto a native sicilian who accompanied him over nine months to reach their field of labor while en route in liverpool elder snow read of the waldensiansWalden sians protestant sectarians who had inhabited the piedmont region of the coition alps for centuries he was 2 moved by their long struggle for religious freedom and saw many similarities between their simple doctrines and the fi restoredfirestored gospel which he had been commissioned to preach he felt empathy when he read that the waldensiansWalden sians like the cormonsMormormonsmons had suffered severe religious persecution and had been forced to seek sanctuary in a mountain retreat snow felt impressed enough to begin his missionary efforts in italy among this simple mountain folk southampton conference president thomas B H stenhouse joined snow and toronto the three were likely excited by predictions made by franklin D richards president of the english mission that thousands would ere long embrace the gospel in italy and that from the commencement of labors in piedmont the work should extend triumphantly 2 the trio began their missionary labors in italy with great expectations but of the 21000 waldensiansWalden sians living in the protestant valleys in 1850 only 187 joined the mormon church during the sixteensixteenyearyear period the italian mission remained open 74 of this group were excommunicated 72 emigrated to utah primarily members of twelve families and the remaining converts drifted into inactivity or returned to their former faith 3 though the number of serious mormon converts was disappointing to the missionaries in the mid 1800s from the vantage point of historical perspective we can observe many lasting contributions that the waldensian emigrants and their descendants have made to the 3 mormon church As the young converts married often into polygamy and raised large families the number of mormons who claimed waldensian ancestry increased today thousands of mormons in utah arizona california and throughout the church trace their ancestry back to the italian waldensiansWalden sians of the protestant valleys in august 1985 the author attended the opening sessions of the yearly synod of the waldensian church held at torre pellice italy the question most often asked by members of the synod was whatever became of the mormon colonies the question was valid considering how little has been published about the colonies since the departure of the last convert family from pinachepanache in 1868 george B watts devotes one chapter to this question in his 1941 publication the waldenses in the new world however watts focused on mormon missionary efforts in the protestant valleys and devoted only a few pages to the emigrating families 4 his biographical material in the appendix was incomplete for example watts completely missed the justet family and michael rostan also the names of some of the immigrating children were omitted helen Z papanikolas devotes only two paragraphs to the waldensian converts in her 1976 publication the peeblespeoples of utah 5 in many cases church records of the italian mission and family records conflicted complicating the task of compiling lists identifying immigrants extensive research hasbasbeen required to resolve discrepancies some 4 descendants of waldensian pioneer families such as michael W homer of the bertoch family marriner cardon and 6 professor james L barker a son of margaret stalle barker have published articles on their waldensian ancestors the author is indebted to these writers for their information and research however these articles focus on specific families and include very little about the other waldensian immigrants who shared similar experiences A collective biography treating the italian emigrants as a community is long overdue the mormon colonies can best be understood when seen as ethnic enclaves for the waldensiansWalden sians like the Norwegianorwegiansns danes and other ethnic groups who emigrated to utah generally settled together the first waldensian immigrants chose to establish communities in ogden and logan where they worshiped worked and socialized together often interintermarryingmarrying As these cities grew and polygamous families were disrupted by federal officers in the late 1870s and 80s180s many of these families relocated in arizona and mexico often the waldensian experience as mormon converts mirrored the experiences of other ethnic groups first there was contact with the mormon elders in their homeland next came conversion then immigration and settlement followed by amalgamation into the larger mormon society to identify all the waldensiansWalden sians who emigrated to utah before 1870 church and family records passenger lists 5 the crossingoftheplainscrossing of the plains index and histories from the church archives and other institutions were consulted after three years of intense study and careful research the autt or believes that the list that follows though it differs somewhat from lists published in other sources 7 is accurate and complete the twelve families include see map in Anpendixappendix A to identify the locales from which the families emigrated 1 bertoch john a widower with five adult children owned a small farm on the steep hillside near st germain three of his children antolantoiantoinettenette daniel and james survived the trip to utah marguerite and john himself both died of cholera en route john died of pneumonia near fort kearney 2 beus michael a farmer from cramolpramol he and wife marianne combe beus had nine children ranging in age from infancy to twelve years ann james john michael paul louis phillip mary and magdalena completed the journey baby joseph died in liverpoolliverpoo10 3 cardon philippe a builder lived with his wife marie tourn cardon and their seven children in san secondo di Pinepinfrolopinerolorolo on the edge of the piedmont plains he served as president of the st bartholomew LDS branch their children mary catherine louis philippe marie madeleine john paul and thomas barthelemy alsoaisoimmigrated to utah 4 chatelain henry a widower was a glazier by trade with four adult children all of whom lived in st germain he was sixtysixsixty six when he was baptized but chatelain died before he could emigrate son peter and daughters lydia henrietta and marie louise all made their way to utah 5 justet daniel and wife jane     The Failure of the Protestant Reformation in Italy: Through the Eyes Adam Giancola of the Waldensian Experience The Failure of the Protestant Reformation in Italy: Through the Eyes of the Waldensian Experience Adam Giancola In the wake of the Protestant Reformation, the experience of many countries across Europe was the complete overturning of traditional institutions, whereby religious dissidence became a widespread phenomenon. Yet the focus on Reformation history has rarely been given to countries like Italy, where a strong Catholic presence continued to persist throughout the sixteenth century. In this regard, it is necessary to draw attention to the ‘Italian Reformation’ and to determine whether or not the ideas of the Reformation in Western Europe had any effect on the religious and political landscape of the Italian peninsula. In extension, there is also the task to understand why the Reformation did not ‘succeed’ in Italy in contrast to the great achievements it made throughout most other parts of Western Europe. In order for these questions to be addressed, it is necessary to narrow the discussion to a particular ‘Protestant’ movement in Italy, that being the Waldensians. In an attempt to provide a general thesis for the ‘failure’ of the Protestant movement throughout Italy, a particular look will be taken at the Waldensian case, first by examining its historical origins as a minority movement pre-dating the European Reformation, then by clarifying the Waldensian experience under the sixteenth century Italian Inquisition, and finally, by highlighting the influence of the Counter-Reformation as pivotal for the future of Waldensian survival. Perhaps one of the reasons why the Waldensian experience differed so greatly from mainstream European reactions has to do with its historical development, since in many cases it pre-dated the rapid changes of the sixteenth century.

  • “The Poor Men of Lyon”
    “THE POOR MEN OF LYON” A display prepared for the URC History Society Conference at Westminster College in June 2019 looked at some of the books about the Waldensians in the URCHS collections. In the 1170s, ‘Peter’ Waldo or Valdès (c.1140-c.1205) gave away all his possessions and formed the Poor Men of Lyon. Know by his name in the Provençal, Italian, or Latin forms, his followers were later known as the Vaudois, the Valdesi, and the Waldenses or Waldensians – but they referred to themselves as the Poor Men of Lyon, or the Brothers. A movement which was characterised by voluntary poverty, lay preaching, and literal interpretation of the Bible (which they translated into the vernacular), the Poor Men soon came into conflict with the Catholic Church, and were declared to be heretical in 1215. As they were persecuted in France, they moved deeper into the high Alpine valleys between France and Italy, into Piedmont. One of the earliest statements of faith for the movement is a Provençal poem dating from c.1200, entitled “La Nobla Leyczon” – in English, The Noble Lesson. During the Reformation, the Poor were hailed as early and faithful proponents of Protestant ideas – the poet John Milton (1608- 1674), writing a sonnet about the Piedmont Easter massacre in 1655, refers to them as ‘them who kept thy truth so pure of old”.     English 12: British Literature and Composition Pastoral Poetry Notes Standards: ELABLRL1 – The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events, main ideas, and characteristics) in poetry and uses this evidence as the basis for interpretation. ELABLRL3 - The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods. Bloom’s Taxonomy Levels: Knowing and Understanding Pastoral poetry depicts country life in idyllic, idealized terms. The term pastoral derives from the Latin word that means shepherd, and originally, pastorals were about rural life, shepherds, and nymphs (minor divinities of nature in classical mythology represented as beautiful maidens dwelling in the mountains, forests, trees, and waters). Pastoral poetry contains the following elements: Idealized setting In pastoral poems, the environment of rural life is idealized--time is always spring or summer; shepherds are young and enjoy a life of song and love; and the sheep seem to take care of themselves. Mood Renaissance poets did not use the pastoral form to accurately and realistically portray rustic life but to convey their own emotions and ideas about life and love. The mood of the poem is the overall feeling that the poem evokes, or causes in the reader. Tone Tone is the attitude the speaker takes toward his or her subject. Dialogue Though these two poems are by different authors, they function as a pair with the two speakers talking directly to one another. Responding to Marlowe’s poem, Raleigh pretends to take each of the shepherd’s idealized promises about pastoral life literally and then allows the nymph to prove each promise to be empty or incapable of fulfillment due to the harsh reality of rural life.

Homer ABSTRACT: During the nineteenth century, Protestant clergymen (Anglican, Presbyterian, and Baptist) as well as missionaries for new reli- gious movements (Mormons, Seventh-day Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses) believed that Waldensian claims to antiquity were important in their plans to spread the Reformation to Italy. The Waldensians, who could trace their historical roots to Valdes in 1174, developed an ancient origins thesis after their union with the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century. This thesis held that their community of believers had preserved the doctrines of the primitive church. The competing churches of the Reformation believed that the Waldensians were “destined to fulfill a most important mission in the Evangelization of Italy” and that they could demonstrate, through Waldensian history and practices, that their own claims and doctrines were the same as those taught by the primitive church. The new religious movements believed that Waldensians were the best prepared in Italy to accept their new revelations of the restored gospel. In fact, the initial Mormon, Seventh-day Adventist, and Jehovah’s Witness converts in Italy were Waldensians. By the end of the century, however, Catholic, Protestant, and Waldensian scholars had debunked the thesis that Waldensians were proto-Protestants prior to Luther and Calvin. n June 1850 Mormon Apostle Lorenzo Snow (1814–1901) opened the Italian Mission in the Kingdom of Sardinia.
