'There is a history in all men's lives' William Shakespeare Although a generation apart, two men who were to make a major contribution to Victorian Rugby shared much in common, not least that both came anointed with the mystical oil of Welsh Rugby, specifically of the Newport variety, though not of a 1st XV vintage. Nevertheless, both made their mark early in the city of that name, not only in rugby but in other sports, notably aquatic. Both were born in England, but were living in Newport by the age of ten, both commenced employment before joining the Territorials and then seeing active service in the British Army before coming to Australia where they later became deeply involved in the organisation and management of Rugby Union in Victoria. The big difference between them lay in their ages, Griffyth George (Griff) Hunt being born in 1911, the same year in which Herbert Garfield (Bert) Penwill, then aged thirty-one, left England for Australia. But as a closer look soon reveals, there were other differences, not least those associated with the social, economic and technological developments of the times. Their service to the State Union covered the beginning and end of its first fifty years and the following accounts inevitably include comment on those times and on the development of the Victorian Rugby Union (VRU) over that period. Before then, successive Unions in the Colony of Victoria had arranged rugby matches against British, New Zealand and New South Wales teams, but organised club competition had been spasmodic. -

Maritime Heritage: Fishing in Cullercoats
Maritime Heritage: Fishing in Cullercoats Key Stage: 2 and 3 Summary: Pupils will learn about fishing in the local area of Cullercoats in the north east of England through different activities. By engaging with outdoor education pupils will learn about how the coast has changed and how industry has changed. Pupils will learn visually by engaging in a powerpoint presentations while discussing ideas and will use team work around the harbour to identify the changes. Activity: Slide 1 Introduction slide. Slide 2 Aims of the lesson Slide 3 Introduce the topic of the fishing industry in Cullercoats Slide 4 Explain women’s role in fishing. Ask pupils how the role has changed today. Slide 5-7 Describe how families worked together to help fishermen. Slide 8 Maritime history: The Northumbrian Coble is unique to the north east. Its design has evolved from the Viking ships. The key feature of the Coble is its flat bottom, which means the boat can be landed on the sandy beaches of the north east. The traditional fish that the Coble fishermen chased was the herring. Some examples are: cod, lobster, herring, salmon and edible crab, all of which were locally caught by Cullercoats fishermen. If children are local to Cullercoats ask if they recognise the houses. -

It was launched on 17 October 1871. It made its maiden voyage on 11 April 1872 from Liverpool to New York, via Queenstown. In May of the same year it made a record westbound crossing, between Queenstown and Sandy Hook, which had been held by Cunard's Scotia since 1866. In October 1874 the Adriatic collided with Cunard's Parthia. Both ships were leaving New York harbour and steaming parallel when they were drawn together. The damage to both ships, however, was superficial. The following year, in March 1875, it rammed and sank the US schooner Columbus off New York during heavy fog. In December it hit and sank a sailing schooner in St. George's Channel. The ship was later identified as the Harvest Queen, as it was the only ship unaccounted for. The misfortune of the Adriatic continued when, on 19 July 1878, it hit the brigantine G.A. -

If you wish to have the kit cut in Sapele plywood or other material, please contact us for pricing. Please contact us for delivery costs. These vary considerably depending on size, weight, and destination. If you leave a message on our website asking for prices please include your postcode, whether you are in the UK or anywhere else. We are able to offer very competitive prices for shipping kits to Europe. We have also shipped kits further afield in the past, and some destinations (e.g. Dubai) are surprisingly reasonable. This price list is compiled as accurately as possible. However, errors may occur. In the event of the plywood prices varying, we will need to apply these prices as soon as we are notified by our suppliers. The prices given are for kits that we have produced in the past and are able to cut without any further development work, though we will rework some of our older designs to use plywood more efficiently and in some cases provide better fitting parts. The designers highlighted in blue provide us with cutting ready CAD files. If the design that you want is not on the list, we will be able to obtain the required files and quote quickly. The designers highlighted in green provide us with paper plans from which we develop the kits. This process takes somewhat longer, though Stitch and Tape designs will be considerably quicker than Clinker Ply.
