Indepth Look at an American Success StoryBy Jennifer L. SetterstromI thought I was getting a book about the history of Thalhimers,a department store in Richmond Virginia, but it is so much more! Elizabeth Thalhimer Smartt has done a superb job in tracing her family roots all the way back to the first Thalhimer who came to America from Germany to eventually begin a business that would grow and expand and endure for decades. I grew up with Thalhimers, so this was particularly interesting to me. The book covers not only a long lineage of Thalihimer business men(and their families) but gives the reader a good look at Richmond history. How the final demise of such an iconic part of Richmond came to be is a reflection of the fate of most of the department stores we baby boomers grew up with. A satisfying read with a touch of nostalgia, and truly a through well told story of the American dream.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great ReadBy Faith M. Norrell- mickensI so enjoyed reading Finding Thalhimers. What a great story of not just how a family business succeeded but also how a young woman searched for her ancestorial home. Growing up in Richmond the store was such an important part of our lives. We have a family story of how my brother visited Santa on Christmas Eve and saw a display item as he was leaving the store. He announced that Santa was going to bring him the cart and horse the next morning. Sure enough it was there when he came down. My mother didn't even know how it happened but my dad obviously did the same thing that was mentioned in the book. That's customer service!! We so miss that with the closing of all the family stores.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The book was received in a timely manner and was in great shape!By Nancy T.The book was delivered in a timely manner and was in good shape. Nice story and Im sure very interesting to the family and friends, but kind of boring to those outside the Thalhimer'srealm. Her journey began when a handwritten note about an unknown ancestor fell from the pages of an elderly cousin's scrapbook. For the next twelve years, Elizabeth Thalhimer Smartt set off on an obsessive quest to find the true story of her family and their beloved department store Thalhimers. Finding Thalhimers chronicles more than 150 years of the Thalhimers’ store and four generations of family leadership, tracing the company’s growth from a modest dry goods shop in Richmond, Virginia, to a 26-store chain across Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Thalhimers, renowned for excellent customer service, quality goods, and business integrity, became a community center as much as a store. It was a “corporate citizen” before the term even existed. Thalhimers witnessed history from the great conflagration of the Civil War to the sit-ins of the Civil Rights era, and from the rise of ready-to-wear to the arrival of the big-box giants. Elizabeth’s grandfather, William B. Thalhimer Jr., was the last and the most successful Thalhimer to preside over the store’s operations. Along with so many of its American retail brethren, Thalhimers closed its doors in 1992. While the store’s headquarters was being demolished in 2005, Smartt suffered the dual loss of her grandfather and their family’s beloved business. In a fresh and vibrant voice, the author tells that story from an insider's perspective. A poignant portrait of a remarkable American family and their retail dynasty, Finding Thalhimers is a book to be treasured. Praise for Finding Thalhimers “In Finding Thalhimers, Elizabeth Smartt has made her mark as a fine storyteller. She has done so with a fresh and intriguing voice, clearly a triumph for a first-time author. Smartt will pull you head over heels into an ever-expanding family saga from the first page to the last. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll identify with the family characters as your own. And, if you’ve lived anywhere near, in or around Richmond, you’ll remember when…. Don’t take this book to bed with you, unless you plan on staying up all night.”- Nancy Wright Beasley, Richmond magazine columnist and author of Izzy’s Fire “Finding Thalhimers is a compelling blend of memoir, history, and genealogical treasure hunt. One must admire Elizabeth Thalhimer Smartt's meticulous devotion to revealing her family's legacy, in full. The Thalhimers lived through and helped shape momentous chapters in American life. But the author's quest to understand these roots and how they might serve as a guide for her own young family is a story in itself. It is heartfelt, at times deeply funny, and in the end, a testament to the enduring power of memory.” – Shane Harris, Senior Writer, Washingtonian magazine and author of The Watchers “As one who grew up in Virginia, I am all too easily swept away just by the name Thalhimer and the memories it evokes. Finding Thalhimers is a complex book, chronicling the rise and fall of a great department store while tracing the lives and times of the Thalhimer family, from Germany to the American South, through Elizabeth Smartt's in-depth research. A rich and evocative read.” – Lisa Tracy, author of Objects of our Affection “This book means everything to me. It’s the history of our family. It’s like giving birth to a child and transferring your ancestors’ DNA along to future generations. It’s not a headstone in a cemetery; it’s a living story. It’s an incredible gift.” – Dad (William B.
