MONTY HALLS Marine Biologist, Explorer and Broadcaster MONTY HALLS Marine Biologist, Explorer And Broadcaster A former Royal Marines officer who worked for Nelson Mandela during the peace process in the early nineties, Monty Halls is an explorer who left the forces to pursue a career in expeditions, travel journalism, and marine biology. Monty has since led teams in some of the most challenging environments on earth, presented numerous multi-award winning documentaries, launched his own production company, and become a renowned inspirational speaker and writer. He has also developed a one-of-a-kind leadership and team building system for the professional and education sectors. Monty is a Land Rover global ambassador, president of the Galapagos Conservation Trust, and a Help For Heroes patron. In 2003, he was awarded the Bish Medal by the Scientific Exploration Society for services to exploration and, in 2010, an honorary Doctor of Science degree by Plymouth University. Growing up on a Mediterranean island began what has been a lifelong love affair with all things marine, and inspired him to seek adventure in, on, and by the water. A marine biologist, explorer, documentary broadcaster, and president and patron of numerous conservation organisations, Monty’s love and knowledge of the ocean spans his personal, academic, and professional life. He has most recently received an Outstanding Contribution to Diving award from Sport Diver Magazine for bringing the sport of diving and the beauty of the underwater world to millions of people, through his writing and television programmes. Over the last decade, Monty’s real passion has become leadership and team building, drawing on his vast experience to run courses for various clients throughout the UK. Inspired by his young family, and with issues like school budget cuts, mental health, and social mobility dominating the media, Monty developed Leaderbox – a single system that makes leadership and team building training available to ALL. Monty is best known for his three BBC2 Great Escapes series, where he lived on the west coasts of Scotland and Ireland with his dog Reuben. He also presented the multi-award winning series Great Barrier Reef, the ground-breaking expedition series Lost Worlds for the Discovery Channel, and Monty Halls’ Dive Mysteries for Channel 5 . Monty then filmed a series for Channel 4, WWII’s Great Escapes, which saw him travel throughout Europe on a historical journey filled with survival, escape and adventure. Following on from this, Monty filmed his second Channel 4 series, My Family and The Galapagos, which came out in 2018 and featured the whole Halls family! Monty has written ten books about his adventures, and regularly writes for national newspapers, magazines, and websites. He has also established a reputation as one of the most entertaining, charismatic, and thought-provoking speakers on the circuit, whether at intimate dinners, national conferences, or on the global stage.     Note from the Chair 2017 is proving to be a busy year for the Trust. Besides all the regular training and qualifications being gained other events have been organised with great success. The Dive Lectures proved to be our best fund raiser so far and the two representatives, Amanda Newton and Kaisa Muhonen, who spoke so enthusiastically about the Trust were excellent. This was followed by the fantastic Mexico trip. Watching our group glide through a Cenote was a real highlight. Then we finally managed to stage the long-awaited party. This was a great success thanks to the hard work and planning of several people and a great venue. The event also managed to raise a good amount for the Trust. Thank you to all involved. Some of you still have the Live Aboard to look forward to. This is another first for the Trust and it will be interesting to see how it all works out. We can all look forward to the Dive Show where plans are under way for a good show, raising funds and just as important spreading the word about the work of the Trust. The Trustees are considering offering some targeted Try Dive events for people with disabilities. This will enable groups or individuals a relaxed taster-session to experience breathing underwater and to meet Trust members. If you know of the contact details of any individuals or groups who you think might benefit from such a session please let me know.     Photo by Jesper Kjøller Frequently Asked Questions WRECK EXPEDITION IN BIKINI ATOLL About Operation Crossroads – The Critical Experiment In the early 1900’s after WW1, the Japanese began to administer the Marshall Islands after a mandate from the League of Nations. This mandate later resulted in a military build up throughout the islands in anticipation of World War II. Bikini and the rest of these peaceful, low lying coral atolls in the Marshalls suddenly became strategic, as did other famous wreck destinations like Truk Lagoon. The Bikini islanders’ life of harmony drew to an abrupt close when the Japanese decided to build and maintain a watchtower on their island to guard against an American invasion of the Marshalls. Throughout the conflict the Bikini station served as an outpost for the Japanese military headquarters in the Marshall Islands, Kwajalein Atoll. In February of 1944, the American forces captured Kwajalein Atoll and thereby effectively crushed the Japanese hold on the Marshall Islands. The five Japanese men left on Bikini, while hiding in a covered foxhole, killed themselves with a grenade before the American military forces could capture them. After the war, in December of 1945, President Harry S. Truman issued a directive to Army and Navy officials that joint testing of nuclear weapons would be necessary “to determine the effect of atomic bombs on American warships.” Bikini, because of its location away from regular air and sea routes, was chosen to be the new nuclear proving ground for the United States government, after Truk Lagoon actually had been their first pick before Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
