Roger Federer fue nº 1 del mundo junior Con este circuito la Federación Internacional de Tenis (ITF) pretende promocionar el deporte del tenis por todos los continentes, así mismo pretende establecer un paso intermedio hacia el profesionalismo, la Federación Internacional de Tenis (ITF) se percató de que cada vez más, en el Circuito Profesional masculino y femenino (A.T.P. – W.T.A.) debutaban jugadores más jóvenes; era indudable que jóvenes de 15 a 18 años no estaban preparados ni eran suficientemente maduros como para afrontar un circuito profesional, donde el nivel de exigencias físicas y psicológicas eran máximas. Ante este problema la Federación Internacional de Tenis (ITF) decidió promocionar un circuito junior donde el máximo exponente serían las cuatro pruebas junior del Grand Slam (Roland Garros, Wimbledon, U.S. Open y Australian Open). El Torneo Internacional Junior de Pontevedra es un torneo de este circuito. Es requisito indispensable para que la ITF incluya este torneo en su calendario que se disputen las categorías masculina y femenina en las modalidades de individuales y dobles.
