I can’t help but take photos of them as I watch warm evening light stream into the barn and kiss their fuzzy ears, or see perfectly formed snowflakes land on their velvety winter coats. -

The intent of this manual is to provide a checklist and guide so that all parties will be able to organize and coordinate a ceremony that will be a fitting tribute to a fallen comrade as well as prepare the unit for performance in memorials, parades, presentation of color and other civic events. Just as in the everyday operations of the fire service, when tragedy strikes, we must be prepared to deal with the conditions that will prevail. Procedures must be in place to handle the chaos and emotional burden that a situation of this magnitude presents. These procedures can also help alleviate the confusion and miscommunication caused by the time constraints of the situation. Some of the areas that need to be addressed are: 1. -

A review of literature reveals that little has been written about the college‘s role in the Civil Rights Movement during this time. -

And today is November 27, 2006. And I would like to start with asking you to tell us a little bit about where you were born and where you grew up. Anne: Ok. Uh, I was born in Alta, Iowa, a very Swedish town, uh in northwest Iowa, 5 miles from Storm Lake. Um, I was born in a house-hospital. My Mother died at childbirth. And so, I was kept with my Grandparents for awhile, and then my Father, who was a farmer, uh I went to his house---but it was pretty-pretty rough on him because he was still grieving. And so, I was taken in by my Aunt and Uncle. And um, they adopted me. And uh, I grew up until the age of ten at Rockwell City. My um, adopted Father was Superintendent of schools there. And um, so I grew up in an education family. And um, then we came to Des Moines in 1951. And uh, loved Des Moines, loved my school---went to Franklin Junior High, in sixth grade---went to Monroe Elementary um one year, then onto Franklin Junior High in sixth grade. Had four years at Franklin and onto Roosevelt and had a wonderful, wonderful time with-with going to school. -

Favors ABSTRACT The most underdeveloped area of study concerning the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s is the effect of Black student activism during the explosive decade. The field is currently dominated by two-dimensional studies that define student activism under the banner of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), or the Black Studies campaigns on white college campuses in the latter half of the decade. Assessing student protests merely through this lens yields a narrow view of this generation of activists. One cause of our failure to identify these students is that scholars of the Civil Rights Movement have ignored the very environment in which the majority of student activists lived, learned, socialized, and ultimately revolted. Analyses of Black colleges invariably conclude that they were paternalistic and their curriculums were conformist, if not geared toward assimilation. Students from these all-Black institutions in the South succeeded in their public and private assault against the policies of Jim Crow and at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement they vaulted the struggle for human rights to unprecedented levels. -
