Nicola Georgina Bergh Town Thesis presented for theCape Degree of DOCTOR OF ofPHILOSOPHY in the Department of Botany UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN University May 2009 Town Cape of University ii ABSTRACT The Greater Cape Floristic Region (GCFR) houses a flora unique for its diversity and high endemicity. A large amount of the diversity is housed in just a few lineages, presumed to have radiated in the region. For many of these lineages there is no robust phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships, and few Cape plants have been examined for the spatial distribution of their population genetic variation. Such studies are especially relevant for the Cape where high rates of species diversification and the ongoing maintenance of species proliferation is hypothesised. Subtribe Relhaniinae of the daisy tribe Gnaphalieae is one such little-studied lineage. The taxonomic circumscription of this subtribe, the biogeography of its early diversification and its relationships to other members of the Gnaphalieae are elucidated by means of a dated phylogenetic hypothesis. Molecular DNA sequence data from both chloroplast and nuclear genomes are used to reconstruct evolutionary history using parsimony and Bayesian tools for phylogeny estimation. -

Holmberg 530 W Whiskey Creek Rd, Washington, MO 63090 Woods Prairie is a scenic and rare refuge of unplowed native tallgrass prairie on the northwestern fringe of the Ozarks bioregion in southwestern Missouri. This isolated 40-acre prairie remnant near the town of Mt. Vernon was part of a 1,700-acre homestead settled in 1836 by John Blackburn Woods of Tennessee. For four generations, the Woods family carefully managed the prairie while protecting it from the plow as all other nearby prairies were destroyed. By 1999, less than 40 acres of the original vast prairie remained, and John’s great granddaughter, Mary Freda (Woods) O’Connell, sold it to the Ozark Regional Land Trust (ORLT, Carthage, MO), to be protected in perpetuity as a nature reserve for public study and enjoyment. ORLT, a non-profit conservation organization founded in 1984 to protect the unique natural features of the Ozarks, completed the purchase on May 27, 1999 through a unique, complex scheme detailed in Thomas and Galbraith (2003). -
Comparative Floral Ecology and Breeding Systems Between Sympatric Populations of Nothoscordum Bivalve and Allium Stellatum (Amaryllidaceae)
Journal of Pollination Ecology, 26(3), 2020, pp 16-31 COMPARATIVE FLORAL ECOLOGY AND BREEDING SYSTEMS BETWEEN SYMPATRIC POPULATIONS OF NOTHOSCORDUM BIVALVE AND ALLIUM STELLATUM (AMARYLLIDACEAE) Daniel Weiherer*, Kayla Eckardt, Peter Bernhardt Department of Biology, Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO, USA 63103 Abstract—We compared the floral biology of two sympatric populations of closely related species over two seasons. In 2018, Nothoscordum bivalve (L.) Britton bloomed from April 23 to May 7 and Allium stellatum Nutt. Ex Ker Gawl bloomed from August 28 to October 4. Erect, white flowers of N. bivalve were scented and had septal nectaries. Erect, pink-purple flowers of A. stellatum had septal nectaries, no discernible scent, and a style that lengthened over the floral lifespan. Both species were pollinated by bees with the most common geometric mean of body dimensions between 2-3 mm. Most bees carried pure loads of the host plant’s pollen. Despite phenological isolation, the two herbs shared three bee species. Allium stellatum was also pollinated by the beetle Chauliognathus pensylvanicus DeGeer (Cantharidae). Tepal nyctinasty ensured mechanical self-pollination in N. bivalve. Protandry occurred in A. stellatum. In N. bivalve, the proportion of pollen tubes penetrating ovules was highest in bagged, self-pollinating flowers. However, in A. stellatum it was highest in exposed flowers and hand cross- pollinated flowers. Fruit set in N. bivalve was highest in exposed and bagged, self-pollinating flowers. In A. stellatum, fruit set was highest in both exposed and hand cross-pollinated flowers. Seed set was the same among all treatments for both species. We interpret these results as evidence that A. -

However, it appears closely related to a few outlying collections from southwest Missouri and central Texas, plus a larger group of collections centered in the cedar glade region of Tennessee, which could include another undescribed species. Rudbeckia terranigrae and these other plants are southern relatives of previously described taxa with more central or northern ranges in eastern states, especially R. tenax and R. speciosa sensu stricto. Appropriate taxonomic treatment for all of these plants remains uncertain, but their morphology and biogeography suggests that they should not be simply combined with R. fulgida sensu stricto, which is largely restricted to southern Appalachian regions, the Piedmont, and mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain. They all produce stoloniferous offsets after flowering, their paleae are generally eciliate or weakly ciliate at apices, and they tend to occur on calcareous substrates. -
