Black and White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia v. variegata) Record Keeping Protocol AZA Institutional Data Management Advisory Group (IDMAG) Government Ownership Task Force (IDMAGGOT) July 28th, 2005 Note: The information contained in this document is not current and is in the process of being revised by the AZA IDMAG. Page 1 of 5 Dear Holding Institution: In conjunction with the AZA Institutional Data Management Advisory Group (IDMAG) and its Government Ownership Task Force (IDMAGGOT), the following record keeping protocol was developed to address data discrepancies in the ISIS database directly related to government-owned black and white ruffed lemurs. These guidelines were developed based on current standards for ISIS data entry. This letter will clarify the terms of agreement, established ISIS mnemonic and related details with regard to government-owned black and white ruffed lemurs held in AZA zoos. Please forward this document to your registrar and/or records keeper in order that your ISIS records for the above-noted species may be reviewed and corrected as necessary. Sincerely, Ingrid Porton Aletha Kinser Rae Lynn Haliday, CRM Ruffed Lemur Chair, IDMAG Chair, IDMAGGOT SSP Coordinator Black and White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia v. variegata) Record Keeping Protocol AZA Institutional Data Management Advisory Group (IDMAG) Government Ownership Task Force (IDMAGGOT) July 28th, 2005 Page 2 of 5 In order to ensure that your records for black and white ruffed lemurs (Varecia v. variegata) are recorded accurately, please refer to the following clarifications for verification of your historical records and guidance for future transactions. Appropriate Entry of Studbook Number The black and white ruffed lemur’s international studbook number should be entered under Global Studbook in the Identifier section in ARKS4. As of the date of this protocol, there is no AZA regional studbook for this subspecies. Mnemonics, Acquisitions and Transfers Currently, there are 8 founders that were imported into the SSP population under an accord between the Government of Madagascar and the Madagascar Fauna Group. The Accord designates that the Government of Madagascar will retain ownership of the imported ruffed lemurs and their subsequent offspring. Please see pages 3-5 for the list of founders and current offspring as well as the official Accord, section 3.1.3.1 – attached separately as Appendix A. For those that are government-owned, acquisitions should be recorded in ARKS as a Loan In or Birth, Loan In from the Government of Madagascar (ISIS Mnemonic MEF). Dispositions of specimens owned by MEF should be recorded as a Loan Transfer to the next facility with their ISIS mnemonic and vendor/recipient ID. The receiving institution should record the acquisition as a Loan In from MEF. Vendor/Recipient ID There are currently two conventions for data entry of the vendor/recipient ID for a non-ISIS reporting facility in the Standards for Data Entry and Maintenance of North American Zoo and Aquarium Databases, page 86. Since the studbook number is a unique number, the Black and White Ruffed Lemur SSP would like you to record the international studbook number (do not modify the number) in the vendor/recipient field as the MEF ID.
