Fascinating Primates Fascinating The Beginning of an Adventure Ever since the time of the fi rst civilizations, nonhuman primates and people have oc- cupied overlapping habitats, and it is easy to imagine how important these fi rst contacts were for our ancestors’ philosophical refl ections. Long ago, adopting a quasi- scientifi c view, some people accordingly regarded pri- mates as transformed humans. Others, by contrast, respected them as distinct be- ings, seen either as bearers of sacred properties or, conversely, as diabolical creatures. A Rapid Tour around the World In Egypt under the pharaohs, science and religion were still incompletely separated. Priests saw the Papio hamadryas living around them as “brother baboons” guarding their temples. In fact, the Egyptian god Thoth was a complex deity combining qualities of monkeys and those of other wild animal species living in rice paddies next to temples, all able to sound the alarm if thieves were skulking nearby. At fi rst, baboons represented a local god in the Nile delta who guarded sacred sites. The associated cult then spread through middle Egypt. Even- tually, this god was assimilated by the Greeks into Hermes Trismegistus, the deity measuring and interpreting time, the messenger of the gods. One conse- quence of this deifi cation was that many animals were mummifi ed after death to honor them. Zaramody et al.: Phylogeny of Eastern Woolly Lemurs MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY AND TAXONOMIC REVISION OF THE EASTERN WOOLLY LEMURS (AVAHI LANIGER) Zaramody A, Fausser J-L, Roos C, Zinner D, Andriaholinirina N, Rabarivola C, Norscia I, Tattersall I and Rumpler Y Key words: Avahi, Strepsirrhini, taxonomy, mtDNA, cytogenetics, new species Abstract The western and northern populations of woolly lemurs (Avahi) have been di- vided into three distinct species (A. cleesei, A. occidentalis and A. unicolor), whereas the eastern populations are still considered to represent a single species (A. laniger), despite the wider distribution of woolly lemurs in this region. To analyze the diver- sity within the eastern population and among the eastern and western populations, we compared cytogenetic data and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from woolly lemurs from 14 sites in the east of Madagascar and from three sites in the west, representing three of the four recognized species. Cytogenetic and mtDNA data are in agreement and confirm the distinctiveness of A. laniger and A. occiden- talis. Within A. laniger the molecular data revealed large genetic distances among local populations. On the basis of these new data we propose to split A. laniger into three species: (1) north of the Mongoro/Onive Rivers, (2) south of the Mongoro/Onive Rivers at least as far south as Mahasoarivo, and (3) from the south-east (Manombo, Sainte Luce). Within the south-eastern species (3) two clearly separated subspecies can be distinguished, one from the region of Manombo and the other from the region of Sainte Luce. The northern species (1) shows considerable intraspecies genetic dis- tances and may consist of several populations distinguishable as subspecies. -

Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France 4Bristol Zoological Society, Bristol, UK Madagascar is home to over 100 endemic lemur taxa (Schwitzer et al. 2013), one of which is the crowned sifaka Propithe- cus coronatus. As with the vast majority of lemurs (a staggering 94% according to Schwitzer et al. 2013), the crowned sifaka is threatened with extinction; it is currently ranked as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (Andriaholinirina et al. 2014). In February 2011, following the discovery of several small and isolated populations distributed across central Madagascar (Razafindramanana and Rasamimanana 2010; King et al. 2012; Rakotonirina et al. 2014), a number of stakeholders, including government ministries and non-governmental organizations, participated in a workshop with the aim of sharing and updating information on the crowned sifaka, and of discussing conservation approaches for such fragmented populations (MEF/GERP/TAF 2011). This special section of Primate Conservation, focusing on the crowned sifaka, is one outcome of that workshop. The special section has taken much longer to publish than we had originally hoped, for which we apologize. One reason is related to the usual issues of authors finding the time to write, submit and revise their papers, and of reviewers and editors find- ing the time to review and edit. -

ABSTRACT GENUS VARECIA: ANATOMY, MORPHOLOGY, AND PATHOLOGY Elise R. Orellana, MS Department of Biological Sciences Northern Illinois University, 2015 Virginia L. Naples, Director An anatomical normal was established for the forelimb and hindlimb of the Genus Varecia through observation of skeletal remains and a detailed dissection of the musculature of a black and white ruffed lemur, Varecia variegata. This was used as a healthy state for comparison with a red ruffed lemur, Varecia rubra, displaying a periosteal disease affecting the long bones. This disease presented as large lesions growing along the diaphyses and epiphyses of the ulna, radius, tibia and fibula as well as on the carpals, metacarpals, tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges. Dissection showed that these lesions avoided the points of origin and insertion of the limb musculature. Instead, the calcified lesions grew over the tendons and some muscle in the wrist and ankles reducing dexterity and range of motion in climbing and walking activities. This study determined the initial diagnosis of primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy to be a misdiagnosis based on the absence of the three main symptoms of the disease: finger clubbing, pachydermia, and periostitis. Instead the location, size, and progression of the bony lesions make Nora’s lesions (bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation) are more appropriate diagnosis. The skeletomuscular data provided in this work allow for Varecia to be used as a model for morphological studies, in disease recognition and diagnosis, and answered questions regarding the effects of the periosteal disease described. This species shows clear female dominance in both feeding and social contexts. In captivity, this dominance hierarchy can lead to heightened aggression between females during the breeding season, which can result in animal separation or group reconfiguration. The objectives of this study are to determine the scope of this species- specific management strategy throughout AZA-accredited zoos, determine the influence of two types of feeding enrichment on aggression levels, and determine the effect of aggression on stress levels by measuring fecal glucocorticoids (fGC). -
