Career Development: Information detailing the scholarships available to grade 12 students has been discussed in class presentations as well as made available to students through the career intern, Nadia.

Grade twelve students have the opportunity to attend a University Fair at Sturgeon Creek High School on November 7th, This fair showcases universities from across Canada and provides students the opportunity to visit booths and gather information on various universities.

Guidance Information:

GRAD INFO: Grade 12 students are reminded to fill out their order forms (a copy is available in the student office) and bring in $40.00 to Nadia, the career intern, or Ms. Longstreet in the guidance office by December 13th. This cost includes the rental of the gown for the grad ceremony, the purchase of the cap and a 5 x 7 photo of the grad receiving their diploma.

The Counselling Department is incorporating ‘Mindfulness’, as a calming technique, with students who visit indicating that they are experiencing anxiety or stress in their lives. Mindfulness teaches us to bring our full attention to what we are doing and when we are doing it, in a non-judgmental manner. Put simply, mindfulness consists of cultivating awareness of the mind and body and living in the here and now. Students may want to consider the apps, Calm in the Storm or Insight Timer which help people to meditate, sleep and relax.

Parents are encouraged to view the website: Kids in the Know and cybertip.ca if they have any questions or concerns surrounding the issues of children and texting or using technological communications.

Any families who would wish to have a Christmas Hamper can contact their child’s guidance counsellor.

Kelvin ISAMR Polar Bear

During the last week of October, twelve students and two teachers from Kelvin travelled to Churchill, Manitoba. The purpose of the trip was to assist Dr. Jane Waterman, from the Uni- versity of Manitoba, with research on the condition of the polar bear population of the Hudson Bay. The group took an eight hour bus trip to Thompson, stopping at beautiful Pisew Falls along the way. In Thompson, the sixteen hour train jour- ney began. The train slowly winds through the lakes and forests of northern Manitoba until it reaches the tundra landscapes in Churchill. Although it was cloudy and snowing, the beauty of the landscape was undeniable. In Churchill the group met up with students from the local high school as well as two from Gillam. Two days out on the tundra to photograph wild polar bears as they arrive on the shores of the Hudson Bay to await the arrival of the sea ice were the highlight of the trip. The bears displayed some exceptional behaviours such as sparring, playing, stretching and rolling. This allowed the group to take spectacular pictures that are not only great memories but also useful research. The research pictures will be analyzed and added to the data that dates back to 2002. Stu- dents will be able to use this exten- sive data set to determine the impact of climate change on the polar bear population in the Hudson Bay region. There is lots of math help available each day at lunch hour, and cer- tain days before or after school. Help is available in English and in French. Ask your math teacher for details. Don’t wait to ask for extra guidance if you need it!

fundraiser! Also, the tea will arrive before the winter break so

it could make an awesome holiday gift! Please talk to your

favorite graduating Kelvinite to order your delicious tea! If

you don’t know a 2020 grad but want to place an order, please

contact Ms. Temesvari for an order form at [email protected]. Smudging takes place daily at Kelvin High School at 8:40am in front of the school.

Smudging gives Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and staff the op- portunity to learn about different cultures and share their teachings with one another. Smudging is a common cultural practice to many Indigenous people across Turtle Island. Smudging is done by burning sacred medicines (sage, cedar, sweet grass, tobacco) to create a smoke to help cleanse ourselves and the envi- ronment around us of negative energies so we can walk in a good way. We will be using sage that was harvested by school staff.

The following teaching is shared with all participants:

“We smudge to clear the air around us. We smudge to clean our minds so that we’ll only have good thoughts of others. We smudge our eyes so that we’ll only see good things in others. We smudge our ears so that we’ll only listen to good things about others. We smudge our mouths so that we’ll only speak of good things about others. We smudge our whole being so that we may portray only the good part of our self through our actions.”

This is voluntary and will be held outside of the school daily at 8:40 a.m. and occasionally could be held inside during extreme weather conditions. If you have any questions, would like to participate, or would like to share your teachings with staff and students, please contact the school.

Over 360 Kelvin students took part in Student Vote Canada 2019, a nation- wide, authentic-learning program that provides students with the opportunity to experience the voting process firsthand and practice the habits of active and informed citizenship. The vote took place on the Friday before Octo- ber's federal election, and the day after over 100 students met with electoral candidates from four different political parties (of the six invited). The results at Kelvin: 1st: NDP minority government (44% of the vote) 2nd: Liberals (23%) 3rd: Green Party, (20% of the ballots cast in their favour). Conservatives, Christian Heritage and People's Party of Canada polled 6%, 4% and 3% respectively among Kelvin students.

Nationally, over one million students elected a Liberal minority government when ballots were counted using a riding by rid- ing (first past the post) count, but actually pro- duced a tie in the popular vote between Conservatives and NDP votes, at 25% each. All in all, the exercise in democracy provided excellent discussion fodder for students of Canada in the Contemporary World (grade 9) and Histoire Canadienne (11e année) to consider.

Thanks go out to Kelvin's human rights collective, HASTA, for organizing Student Vote Canada 2019. Kelvin's All-Candidates Forum was worthwhile,

as always.

-- - - Kelvin Water Polo Striving for another Provincial Championship!

Kelvin is currently coached by Scott Bachus, Catherine Metrycki, Adrianna Penton and Chris McCallum

Mme Whicker and Mr. J. Young are the teacher supervisors of the team and are an integral part of making this team happen every year.

Congratulations to the members of our Kelvin cross country teams for an excellent season! The teams started the season by winning 3 of the 4 zone titles. At the provincial championships in Roseisle, Manitoba on October 17th, all teams ran excep- tionally well.

Our JV Boys finished 3rd overall and the JV girls came in a close 2nd.

We also had some outstanding individual performances. Ceci H. won the varsity girls title, and Sam K. finished 3rd in the JV boys race! Well done, everyone.

Looking forward to seeing everyone out for indoor track! Coaches: Mr. Campbell and Mr. Drover To Kelvin High School

It was probably something Justice Sheila Martin wasn’t expecting but appreciated nonetheless. At the end of her presentation at Kelvin High School on Monday, a young female student told the Supreme Court of Canada judge that she was going to be able to say she saw and heard two of her role models: Martin and former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama, scheduled to speak at the Bell MTS Place on Tuesday.

“It is spectacular that we’re being given the opportunity to speak in schools because that’s where the future is for great ideas so a compliment like that is like a gift to me that I will think about a lot,” said Martin, as the nine Supreme Court judges fanned out across the city Monday afternoon to address high school students and take questions. “The young people are our future and that’s why we chose to start our tour in schools to understand what’s going on with them.”

The Supreme Court of Canada is in Winnipeg this week to hold hearings outside of Ottawa for the first time in its 144-year history. While the high court’s nine judges are to hear two cases, much of their time is being spent reaching out to people.

Each of the nine judges was paired up with a Manitoba judge with Martin appearing at Kelvin with Chief Justice Glenn Joyal of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba.

KELVIN ROCKY MOUNTAIN TRIP: JUNE 23 – 30 2020 CANMORE,

THERE ARE STILL A FEW SPOTS OPEN – DON’T MISS OUT! Explore the Rockies! Spend your last week of the school year exploring the mountains around Canmore, Alberta. We will stay at the Canmore Alpine Club of Canada and day hike some of the best hikes in the area – Mount Yamnuska, Lady MacDonald, and Ha Ling to name a few.

The trip was established in 1982 by staff members who wanted to share their experiences of hiking in the mountains. This year’s Rocky Mountain Trip will leave on June 23rd and return on June 30th. All staff on the trip have experience with hiking and outdoor trips. The trip is open to students in Grades 10 & 11.

The approximate cost of the trip this year will be between $899 and $999 depending on the number of students. This cost covers tour bus transportation, group supplies,

lodging, and all student meals. The group will cook its own meals at the facility in Canmore, and we will day hike in the Canmore / Kananaskis area in Alberta. Trip costs will be finalized once student trip numbers are confirmed and payments will be spaced out throughout the school year. If you have questions concerning this trip, please email: [email protected] or [email protected]

TOY DRIVE AND BREAKFAST On December 6th 150 students and staff from Pinkham School will be joining us to celebrate our 20th annual toy drive and breakfast. The day begins with a pancake breakfast, followed by festive activities culminating with the arrival of Santa who will deliver a present, a stocking, a stuffed animal and books for each and every child.

Students work countless hours to make this day happen and their commitment to this undertaking is truly inspiring. Their efforts embody the spirit of giving, the spirit of sharing, the spirit of volunteerism and it allows us to reflect on the privileges that we so often take for granted.

It is so easy to make a difference in the lives of others if only for a few hours. All we need to do is to care enough to get involved. Thus, we are asking for your help to make this day happen. We invite you to bring in gently used books and stuffed animals and drop them off in the box in you’re a Slot classroom. Students are encouraged to bring in a $3 donation to their A slot classes to help purchase toys.

We are looking for partnerships to help make this day happen. If you have any connections in the toy or grocery industries we could really use your help. It takes 300 pairs of hands, and so very many hours to make this day happen and we are inviting (and counting on) the entire Kelvin community to step up and get involved.

Together, WE can make a difference!
