Many of our proudest accomplishments from the past year have centred around one theme: community. Like any postsecondary institution, we belong to a number of communities. There’s our vibrant on-campus community of students, faculty and staff. There’s the broader communities in which those campuses exist: Oakville, Brampton and Mississauga. There’s our thriving alumni community, which numbers over 148,000 strong. There’s our community of industry partners, donors and advisers, and our postsecondary peers locally, nationally and internationally. The stories in the pages that follow showcase some of the many ways we’ve had an impact in our communities over the past year. Read on to discover how we’re designing a school for a First Nations community, removing the barriers to postsecondary education for underprivileged individuals, enhancing our campus environments, supporting international events, and sharing our advanced technology and know-how with our local communities. While the stories vary dramatically, each one showcases the power of collective ideas, collaboration, unity and belonging — all the important elements of community. Through the extraordinary participation of so many caring members of our community, we’ve bolstered our reputation as Canada’s Creative Campus and one of Canada’s leading postsecondary institutions. I hope this report inspires your continued interest and invaluable support of Sheridan. Kim: Harm Reduction and Substance Use: Examining the Politics and Policy Impacts (Under the direction of Krista M. Perreira) This dissertation evaluates the impacts and political dynamics of harm reduction policies concerning substance use in North America. In doing so, this three-essay dissertation focuses on two substance use policies: medical marijuana laws (MMLs) and supervised injection services (SISs). The first two essays evaluate the unintended impacts that result from the implementation of MMLs in the U.S. The first essay evaluates the impact of state-level MML implementation and specific policy dimensions (i.e., dispensaries, patient registries, and in-home cultivation) in the U.S. on non-drug related arrest rates and crime rates for violent and property crimes. The second essay analyzes the effect of each MML policy dimension on the probability of cigarette smoking among U.S. adults. Considered together, these two essays highlight various unintended downstream impacts that need to be taken into consideration as policymakers adopt and implement MMLs. The third essay is a political evaluation of the barriers to adopting SISs in North America. The dearth of SISs in North America is puzzling considering the wealth of evidence suggesting their effectiveness in preventing overdoses and connecting injection drug users with treatment resources.

    View this email online Learning from the moment February 4, 2021 Colleagues, The employees and students at Laurentian University in Sudbury have been top of mind this week. Laurentian is seeking creditor protection based on what they describe as extreme financial pressures brought on by a wicked combination of declining enrolment, escalating costs, the 2019 tuition freeze and specific expenses related to the pandemic. I’m not in any position to judge the veracity of Laurentian’s claims, but it’s clear that the situation is highly precarious. In that context, I wanted to take time today to reflect on Sheridan’s financial circumstances. It’s also Black History Month, and I want to promote the events our community has organized. Financial stability Black History Month Financial stability Simply: the Laurentian situation underscores why Sheridan has been focused so intently on financial sustainability. In the face of a pandemic, a related global recession and unprecedented changes to how we recruit, teach and retain students – there’s a tremendous imperative to be bold while carefully managing our finances to maintain and enhance the state-of-the-art learning experience Sheridan is known for. As you know, we planned for a “high-impact” budget scenario for 2020-21 that was based on significant enrolment decreases and a resultant $81M decrease in annual Subscribe to our email list. revenue. We took several very difficult steps early in the pandemic to manage costs - - including a hiring freeze, a reduction in discretionary spending and the careful management of part-time salary expenses.     A little bit about Victor Fedeli ... Victor Fedeli is a life-long entrepreneur, specializing in communications. Mark Winfield and Becky MacWhirter Faculty of Environmental Studies York University, Toronto Canada The design and role of Ontario’s electricity system have been central elements of debates about the province’s economy and environment since the system’s origins at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Although electricity accounts for only one quarter of the province’s total energy consumption, questions around the generation, distribution and conservation of electrical energy dominate the Ontario’s energy policy discourse (Joshi, 2012). The scale of Ontario’s electricity system is substantial. The province plans expenditures in the range of $87 billion over the next thirty years on its maintenance and expansion (Ministry of Energy, 2010), a level of investment comparable to that anticipated in the development of Alberta’s oil sands.1 The consequences of the decisions made about the Ontario system’s direction are of no less economic, social and environmental importance to Canada’s future.2 For the first seventy years of their existence, the institutions and policies that defined the province’s electricity system operated in an environment of relative stability. In contrast, the past three decades have been characterized by growing instability. Since the late 1970s Ontario has moved through a succession of apparently contradictory policy models: supply planning; “soft” energy paths and integrated resource planning; a “market” model; a “hybrid” model combining market and planning elements; a renewable energy paradigm centred around the 2009 Green Energy and Green 1 The Government of Alberta currently estimates domestic and international investment commitments to the oil sands in the range of $100 billion (Alberta, 2012) 2 Total installed generating capacity in Ontario as of 2011 was 35,858MW.

    OATA President, Drew Laskoski, Trainer of the Year The Ontario Junior Hockey League today announced that Drew Laskoski of the Newmarket Hurricanes has been named the 2014-15 recipient of the OJHL Trainer-of-the-Year Award. The 52-year old Laskoski has spent the past 28 years plying his trade with York Region junior clubs, dating back to the 1985-86 season when he was the trainer for the Schomberg Cougars Junior 'C' club after graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo. With the Newmarket Flyers of the OPJHL taking a one year hiatus in 1986-87, they returned as the Junior 'B' Newmarket 87's in 1987-88 and with Laskoski as the club's Head Athletic Therapist, starting an on-and- off tenure with the franchise that sees him still in Newmarket today. 140 Allstate Parkway, Suite 302, Markham, Ontario, L3R 5Y8 t:905.946.8080 www.ontarioathletictherapists.org After spending two seasons with the 87's, Laskoski would attain his Diploma in Sports Injury Management from Sheridan College in 1990, while also spending a season as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues' Trainer in 1989-90. That summer, he would partner with Dr. Harvey Pasternak to establish Upper Canada Sports Medicine in Newmarket, Ontario, of which he remains co-owner today. Laskoski returned to the 87's fold in 1991-92 and would remain with the club for six seasons, through their transitional return to the OJHL Junior 'A' ranks and an OJHL/Dudley-Hewitt Cup Championship season in 1995-96 that included a trip to the first-ever Royal Bank Cup that took place in Melfort, Saskatchewan.
