AS and A LEVEL MEDIA STUDIES Factsheet Industries and audiences factsheet: The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw Industries Production and distribution • The Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw is broadcast weekdays from 06.30-10.00 am. • The Breakfast Show has been running since 1967, but Nick Grimshaw took over as the 15th presenter in 2012. • BBC Radio 1 is broadcast on FM, DAB, Freeview, Freesat, Virgin, Sky, or online via BBC Radio Player (including via the phone or tablet app) where it can be heard live or streamed for 30 days. • It is produced by the BBC from its own studios at Broadcasting House in London. • There’s a useful BBC Academy podcast (with transcript) about how the programme is produced http://www.bbc. co.uk/academy/articles/art20170619095219011 • You can also hear what one of the producers (Fiona Hanlon) thinks when she talks about what it’s like to work on the programme: https://www.shu.ac.uk/learn-more/radio-1- breakfast-show • The music is largely playlisted – what is going to be played on daytime Radio 1 is decided by a committee; they choose around 40 records each week for repeated daytime play (A-list records get 25 plays a week, B-list 15, and C-list eight to 10). The BBC’s Role in the News Media Landscape: The Publishers’ View The BBC Charter Review provides an opportunity for the government to look at the future of the BBC and its evolving role in the wider media landscape. The green paper on Charter Review asks some important questions about the BBC’s scale and scope, funding and governance, and the impact of its ever-growing range of services on commercial media competitors: Does the BBC’s £3.7 billion per year of public funding give it an unfair advantage and distort audience share in a way that undermines commercial business models? Does its huge online presence and extensive free online content damage a wide range of players? Is the BBC able to continue to develop great content to audiences, efficiently and cost effectively while minimising any negative impact on the wider market and maximising any benefits? Is the expansion of the BBC’s services justified in the context of increased choice for audiences? Is the BBC crowding out commercial competition and, if so, is this justified? How should the BBC’s commercial operations, including BBC Worldwide, be reformed? How should the current model of governance and regulation for the BBC be reformed? The News Media Association (NMA), the voice of independent commercial news brands in the UK, believes that the system of BBC governance should place greater obligations on the BBC to work collaboratively – rather than in competition - with the wider news sector. We commissioned Oliver and Ohlbaum Associates (O&O) to examine the changing market for news services and the BBC’s expanding role within that market. -

What Advantages Did the British Empire Have for People Living In
for showing students the complexities of constructing historical claims about the British empire Enquiry question: What advantages did the British Empire have for people living in it? I wanted to give my Year 8 students ownership of their work on the British Empire by allowing them to suggest our ‘enquiry question’.1 In order to introduce the Empire, I brought in sugar, spices, bananas, chilli peppers and cotton. I then showed maps demonstrating the Empire at its height. Having already done some work on getting students to pose their own enquiry questions,2 students were able to suggest several. The one that caught my attention was, ‘What advantages did the British Empire have for people living in it?’. I decided that such an enquiry could include in-depth work on India while also allowing reflection on the British Empire in overview. With only seven one-hour lessons, planning a meaningful enquiry was challenging. It would have been easy to over- simplify and distort. The Empire was so multi-faceted, the perspectives within it so varied and the perspectives from which it might be studied so widely contrasting, that it was difficult to find acceptable simplification for Year 8 without reducing their judgements to facile or naïve simplicity. I therefore decided to build the lesson sequence around these very difficulties. I constructed a scheme that would make pupils aware of the range of perspectives within the Empire and the range of perspectives from which the period might be studied, so that they would become newly thoughtful about the challenge of making any analytic claims at all. -

This is a contribution to the debate over Charter renewal, not the last word. I look to a vigorous and informed public debate to produce the consensus about the future size, shape and mission of the BBC. This document is itself a consensus, arrived at after a vigorous debate inside the BBC, and represents the considered views of Governors and management. Part II – our proposals on governance – is, of course, entirely the responsibility of the Governors. At the heart of Building public value is a vision of a BBC that maintains the ideals of its founders, but a BBC renewed to deliver those ideals in a digital world. That world contains the potential for limitless individual consumer choice. But it also contains the possibility of broadcasting reduced to just another commodity, with profitability the sole measure of worth. A renewed BBC, placing the public interest before all else, will counterbalance that market-driven drift towards programme-making as a commodity. -
