Little The Legal History of the Animal Rights Movement in America should be a part of the United States history curriculum of secondary education. The Animal Rights Movement and its legislative victories have been a part of the tapestry of American history since the Puritan settlements of the 1600s. Its inclusion can have important applications in the curriculum of high school courses, highlighting a part of American history that is largely unseen. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I dedicate this project to my son Tully. I know our son carries with him all the beauty and inspiration your love provided me and which brought him into this world in all his glory. To my mentor, Gayle Olson-Raymer. I met you when I was barely 18 and newly enrolled as freshman at Humboldt State University almost 13 years ago. I can remember those days as if they were yesterday; sitting in your lecture hall and being inspired by your intelligence, the amazing ability you have to teach with passion and conviction, and for providing an example of true academic integrity and faithful honesty to a narrative of history based in truth and not fiction. Thank you for being what brought me back to Humboldt State for my credential degree, for your countless hours of lecture and feedback, and for your unconditional support and inspiration throughout all of these years. Thank you for answering all of my questions about the nature of life and love, for cultivating my creativity and inspiring me with yours, for gifting me as a child with cards from wild wolf sanctuaries who sent me pictures of “my wolf” for birthdays and holidays, for introducing me to your feminist animal rights activist friends, who like you, became my childhood heroines, and for being my fairy godmother who protects the integrity of the sweet little girl who loved animals fiercely and reminds me of her own inherent right for happiness always and unconditionally. Thank you for telling me that education is the only thing no one can take away from you, teaching me to value a universal education and continue it for life. And finally, to all of the passionate, dedicated, fearless, and compassionate animal rights and environmental protection activists I have met (and not met) fighting for your convictions to protect life in all of its beautiful incarnations. You do it for our children and for the generations that follow and you do it for those that cannot speak for themselves, who wait for their inherent right to a life free of needless suffering. You are my heroines and heroes and I live my life hopefully in some measure being worthy of sharing in the world that you manifest through your blood, sweat and tears. I hope to honor those both waiting and fighting for justice, by some small measure, through my attempt to document their legacy within this project.   • Are Illegal Direct Actions by Animal Rights Activists Ethically Vigilante?
    260 BETWEEN THE SPECIES Is the Radical Animal Rights Movement Ethically Vigilante? ABSTRACT Following contentious debates around the status and justifiability of illegal direct actions by animal rights activists, we introduce a here- tofore unexplored perspective that argues they are neither terrorist nor civilly disobedient but ethically vigilante. Radical animal rights movement (RARM) activists are vigilantes for vulnerable animals and their rights. Hence, draconian measures by the constitutional state against RARM vigilantes are both disproportionate and ille- gitimate. The state owes standing and toleration to such principled vigilantes, even though they are self-avowed anarchists and anti-stat- ists—unlike civil disobedients—repudiating allegiance to the con- stitutional order. This requires the state to acknowledge the ethical nature of challenges to its present regime of toleration, which assigns special standing to illegal actions in defense of human equality, but not equality and justice between humans and animals. RARM typically characterizes these ac- tions as examples of direct action rather than civil disobedience (Milligan 2015, Pellow 2014). Moreover, many RARM activ- ists position themselves as politically anarchist, anti-statist, and anti-capitalist (Best 2014, Pellow 2014). Jones California State University – Chico KEYWORDS animal rights, animal liberation, animal ethics, sentience, social justice, factory farming, industrialized agriculture ABSTRACT The literature on social justice, and social justice movements themselves, routinely ignore nonhuman animals as legitimate subjects of social justice. Yet, as with other social justice movements, the contemporary animal liberation movement has as its focus the elimination of institutional and systemic domination and oppression. In this paper, I explicate the philosophical and theoretical foundations of the contemporary animal rights movement, and situate it within the framework of social justice. I argue that those committed to social justice – to minimizing violence, exploitation, domination, objectification, and oppression – are equally obligated to consider the interests of all sentient beings, not only those of human beings. Introduction I start this essay with a discouraging observation: despite the fact that the modern animal1 rights movement is now over 40 years old, the ubiquitous domination and oppression experienced by other- than-human animals has yet to gain robust inclusion in social justice theory or practice.

It is common knowledge that he was an Anglican, yet friendly and cooperative with Virginia Presbyterians. However, historians have yet to go beyond those general categories to the specific strains of Presbyterianism and Anglicanism which Henry uniquely harmonized into a unified belief system. Henry displayed a moderate, Latitudinarian, type of Anglicanism. Unlike many other Founders, his experiences with a specific strain of Presbyterianism confirmed and cooperated with these Anglican commitments. His Presbyterian influences could also be described as moderate, and latitudinarian in a more general sense. These religious strains worked to build a distinct religious outlook characterized by a respect for legitimate authority, whether civil, social, or religious. This study goes further to show the relevance of this distinct religious outlook for understanding Henry’s political stances. Henry’s sometimes seemingly erratic political principles cannot be understood in isolation from the wider context of his religious background. Uniquely harmonized
