The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films.

  • Rabindrnath Tagore's Nauka Dubi - from Page to Screenn Prof
Rabindrnath Tagore's Nauka Dubi - From Page to Screenn Prof. Shailee Dhamsania A journey of a literary work fiom page to screen makes adaptation interesting. The adaptation of print medium into film took place for certain reasons. Firstly, the director gets fascinated by the story and believes the story lends itself beautihlly to the medium of film. Secondly, many a time he wishes to present his personal interpretation of the original story through his own language of film. Thirdly, he wishes to take up the challenge of recreating a period in history, and the original literary source is picked up mainly for the period element than for its theme of plot. Fourthly, he would like to use film because the story as literature reflects it, is in some way or another his own ideological stand on a particular subject or issue, and his use of the film medium conveys this ideology to his audience. Rabindranath Tagore is a milestone in Bengali literature. With the publication of Gitanjali, his fame attained a luminous height taking him across continents. For the world he became the voice of India's spiritual heritage; and for India, especially for Bengal he became a great living institution. Tagore was philosophic, spiritual and experimental in his expression. He was more inclined to poetry but contributed and enriched all most all forms of art and literature. There is no exaggeration if we call him the best literary stalwart of India. His famous work e.g. 'Gora', 'Chokher-Bali', 'Nauka Dubi', 'Char Ad*' fall into the category of the best Bengali novels, extremely popular and reached the masses through the, original and translated versions of his works.

  • Sexual Myths and Self-Body Consciousness: in Rituporno Ghosh’S Adaptation of Tagore’S Chitrangada
Pratidhwani the Echo A Peer-Reviewed International Journal of Humanities & Social Science ISSN: 2278-5264 (Online) 2321-9319 (Print) Impact Factor: 6.28 (Index Copernicus International) Volume-IV, Issue-I, July 2015, Page No. 40-43 Published by Dept. of Bengali, Karimganj College, Karimganj, Assam, India Website: http://www.thecho.in Sexual myths and self-body consciousness: In Rituporno Ghosh’s adaptation of Tagore’s Chitrangada. Barnali Sikder. Assistant Professor, Janata College, Serfanguri. Assam, India Abstract The traditionally sanctioned space of heterosexuality is being increasingly challenged in art and aesthetics today. Homosexuality as a taboo and part of a trangressive space is being negated on basis of both western feminist interventions as much as a neo-liberalist reterritorialization of body and sexuality as a subversive symbol against commoditification of the body as an intrusion into identity of the body, hence of self. Noted film-maker Rituporno Ghosh appropriates Rabindranath Tagore’s Chitrangada with a telling effect, cinematizing on the dilemma of homosexuals embedded in a society which can’t define desire and pleasure beyond the body- negating other identitarian possibilities for which the body is a metaphor. In his film, Ghosh has thoroughly dealt with the issue of homosexuals and aesthetized a vision for a transformation in our outlook. This aesthetised vision can be achieved with the realization that the body can never be considered as the epitome of an individuated identity. Here, in Rituporno Ghosh’s adaptation of Tagore’s Chitrangada literature has come to life through the lense of his camera putting a strong statement against a mythicised truth.

  • Rituparno Ghosh Has Written and Directed, ''Khela" (Bengali, 110 Mins, Colour), an Impressionistic Look at the Pressures of Film Making and Personal Trauma
FILM Khela Abhijit Ghosh-Dastidar Rituparno Ghosh has written and directed, ''Khela" (Bengali, 110 mins, colour), an impressionistic look at the pressures of film making and personal trauma. It is an intriguing work and daring memoir that mixes memories, sociology and the anxieties of film making. Before a large house, Shila (Manisha Koirala) gets down from a car, while husband, Raja (Prasenjit Chatterjee) remains in the car. The wife hands over a bunch of keys to Raja. The marriage has broken up. Shila is unable to explain to her elder sister, Rimi (Rupa Ganguly), as to why she has returned from her husband's abode. It was four years of marriage and the couple did not have any children. There is a cut back to the past, where Shila's mother rejects the idea of not having any kids. ''Khela" abounds in the past being recalled. Raja, a non-mainstream film maker, is directing a film on Gautam Buddha's life, based on a historical classic by Aban Thakur. Raja flips through an album of photos, containing profiles of child applicants. The producer, Bikram (Shankar Chakravarty) stumbles on a childhood photo of Raja, taken at his aunt's (pishi) house, several years ago. Shila discusses her marriage with sister, Rimi, Raja has been serious about his work, and has had no time for family. Art has been supreme for him, and there was no value for life. From an upper story window, Raja spots two school boys with their satchels, having 'phootchkas' (soup pies). Raja selects one of the boys, Abhirup (Akashneel Dutta Mukherjee), for the role of Nalak, in his film.

  • Barrenness and Bengali Cinema
1 “May You Be the Mother of A Hundred Sons!”: Barrenness vs. Motherhood in Bengali Cinema” Somdatta Mandal Department of English & Other Modern European Languages Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan Borrowing from the recently published novel The Palace of Illusions, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s reimagining of the world-famous epic Mahabharata, let me begin with a well-known story. “Gandhari’s marriage, although she’d given up so much for its sake, was – like Kunti’s – not a happy one. Dhritarashtra was a bitter man. He never got over the fact that he’d been passed over by the elders – just because he was blind – when they decided which of the brothers should be king… The goal of Dhritarashtra’s life was to have a son who could inherit the throne after him. But here a problem arose, for in spite of his assiduous attempts Gandhari didn’t conceive for many years. When she finally did, it was too late. Kunti was already pregnant with Judhisthir. A year came. A year went. Yudhisthir was born. As the first male child of the next generation, the elders declared, the throne would be his. Dhritarashtra’s spies brought more bad news. Kunti was pregnant again. Now there were two obstacles between Dhritarashtra and his desire. Gandhari’s stomach grew large as a giant beehive, but her body refused to go into labor. Perhaps the frustrated king berated her, or perhaps the fact that he’d taken one of her waiting women as his mistress drove Gandhari to her act of desperation. She struck her stomach again and again until she bled, and bleeding gave birth to a huge, unformed ball of flesh.

Currentbooks.com Abstract Rabindranath Tagore’s literary creations are always appealing to readers and thus these literary sources often provide interesting plot for filmmakers too. Rituparno Ghosh, a Bengali filmmaker from West Bengal , is often considered to be a fan of Tagore, as time and again he has chosen Tagore’s literary masterpieces for his films. Chitrangada is his last cinematic adaptation, which is again an adaptation of Tagore’s Dance drama with the same name. In the adaptation of Tagore’s Chitrangada, he has cinematized the possibility of human desires entrapped in the confinement of body. In this adaptation, Ghosh has thoroughly dealt with the necessity of rethinking the already identified and accepted norms of the society. Homosexuality which is often considered to be a Taboo in our society is being negated by him in this film while redefining the meaning of body and then of Self.
