[email protected] Abstract: The 80 paintings of Australian flora, fauna and landscapes by English artist Marianne North (1830-1890), completed during her travels in 1880–1881, provide a record of the Australian environment rarely presented by artists at that time. In the words of her mentor Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, director of Kew Gardens, North’s objective was to capture landscapes that were ‘doomed shortly to disappear before the axe and the forest fires, the plough and the flock, or the ever advancing settler or colonist’. In addition to her paintings, North wrote books recollecting her travels, in which she presented her observations and explained the relevance of her paintings, within the principles of a ‘Darwinian vision,’ and inevitable and rapid environmental change. By examining her paintings and writings together, North’s works provide a documented narrative of the state of the Australian environment in the late nineteenth- century, filtered through the themes of personal botanical discovery, colonial expansion and British imperialism. Bark smooth, mottled white, yellow, pink, orange, brown, pale grey, dark grey or blue grey, sometimes slightly powdery. Juvenile growth (coppice or wild seedling to 50 cm tall): stems round in cross-section; juvenile leaves always petiolate, opposite at lowest node then alternate, orbicular (often wider than long), deltoid to ovate, 2–6.5 cm long, 2–9 cm wide, apex round or emarginate, base Fruit barrel-shaped truncate, discolorous, dull, blue-green to green. Adult leaves alternate, petiole 0.9–2.7 cm long; blade slightly falcate to lanceolate, 6.5–17 cm long, 1.2–4 cm wide, base usually tapering to petiole, strongly discolorous, glossy, darker green on upper side, paler below, side-veins at an acute or wider angle, densely to very densely reticulate, intramarginal vein parallel to and well removed from margin, oil glands small, obscure. The essential oils of 10 species were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main component of Eucalyptus crebra, E. microtheca, E. rudis and Melaleuca quinquenervia essential oils was 1,8-cineole (31.6-49.7%). E. melanophloia and E. tereticornis contained p-cymene (41.8-58.1%) as a major component, while Eucalyptus kitsoniana and E. pruinosa essential oils were dominated by α-pinene (25.8-31.4%). Eugenol methyl ether was identified as a major component in M. bracteata essential oil (82.3%). α-Pinene (31.4%) was the main component in the C. viminalis essential oil. IOSR Journal Of Pharmacy www.iosrphr.org (e)-ISSN: 2250-3013, (p)-ISSN: 2319-4219 Volume 7, Issue 3 Version.1 (March 2017), PP. 72-91 The pharmacological and therapeutic importance of Eucalyptus species grown in Iraq Prof Dr Ali Esmail Al-Snafi Department of Pharmacology, College of Medicine, Thi qar University, Iraq Abstract:- Eucalyptus species grown in Iraq were included Eucalyptus bicolor (Syn: Eucalyptus largiflorens), Eucalyptus griffithsii, Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Syn: Eucalyptus rostrata) Eucalyptus incrassate, Eucalyptus torquata and Eucalyptus microtheca (Syn: Eucalyptus coolabahs). Eucalypts contained volatile oils which occurred in many parts of the plant, depending on the species, but in the leaves that oils were most plentiful. The main constituent of the volatile oil derived from fresh leaves of Eucalyptus species was 1,8-cineole. The reported content of 1,8-cineole varies for 54-95%. The most common constituents co-occurring with 1,8- cineole were limonene, α-terpineol, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, globulol and α , β and ϒ-eudesmol, and aromatic constituents. The pharmacological studies revealed that Eucalypts possessed gastrointestinal, antiinflammatory, analgesic, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, insecticidal, repellent, oral and dental, dermatological, nasal and many other effects. The current review highlights the chemical constituents and pharmacological and therapeutic activities of Eucalyptus species grown in Iraq. Advice to the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources from the Threatened Species Scientific Committee on Amendments to the List of Ecological Communities under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 1. Name A nomination was received for the Peppermint Box (Eucalyptus odorata) Grassy Woodlands. This ecological community is confined to South Australia. The national ecological community is named the Peppermint Box (Eucalyptus odorata) Grassy Woodland of South Australia ecological community, as this represents the dominant species present, the type of vegetation present and its distribution in South Australia only. 2. Description The Peppermint Box (Eucalyptus odorata) Grassy Woodland of South Australia ecological community is defined by a combination of features. Peppermint Box (Eucalyptus odorata) is the dominant species of the tree canopy. The woodland tree form (a single main trunk at the base with low branches) of Peppermint Box characterises this ecological community as opposed to the whipstick mallee form that is part of a separate ecological community. Other tree species may be present in the canopy but are never as abundant as Peppermint Box and would not be dominant parts of the tree canopy. Other tree species that may be present include Grey Box (E. microcarpa), South Australian Blue Gum (E. leucoxylon), Sugar Gum (E. cladocalyx), Mallee Box (E. porosa), Drooping Sheoak (Allocasuarina verticillata), White Cypress-pine (Callitris glaucophylla) and Southern Cypress-pine (C. preissii). The vegetation structure is an open to dense woodland. The tree canopy comprises low trees, generally 5-10 m tall but sometimes up to 15 m tall, with a typical canopy cover of 5 to 40% which can occasionally reach 70% (Hyde 1996; Robertson 1998). -

This list is not exclusive but can be used as a helpful guide . Definitions (For the purpose of the Camden LEP) “tree” means any plant with a sturdy, dominant single main stem and (a) is more than 3 metres high or (b) has a spread of more than 3 metres or (c) has a trunk diameter of more that 150mm measured 1 metre above ground level. “littoral” means the foreshores, riverbanks and the plants of that habitat. “macrophytes” means the conspicuous plants that dominate wetlands, shallow lakes and streams. “salinity” means common salt which is toxic to most land plants when present in high levels in the soil.
