NASSiGd) and Rolf G. O b e r p r ie l e r Abstract: The genus Sinobirma Bryk 1944 (stat. nov. as a genus), which was de scribed as a subgenus of the Australian genus Opodiphthera Wallengren 1859 (Saturniinae, Saturniini), is not at all closely related to the Australasian complex of Saturniidae. In contrast, it is a member of the African group of genera related to Tagoropsis Felder 1874 (Saturniinae, Pseudapheliini), as evidenced by the imaginal habitus and the structure of the male genitalia. There is evidence that Sinobirma malaisei (Bryk 1944) comb, nov., the sole species in the genus, known only from the type locality in Yunnan, may be closely related to some species of Maltagorea Bouyer 1993 from Madagascar. Thus, it seems possible that Malta gorea is a paraphyletic assembly rather than a monophyletic genus. Possible rela tionships in the group of genera are discussed. [email protected] Abstract: The 80 paintings of Australian flora, fauna and landscapes by English artist Marianne North (1830-1890), completed during her travels in 1880–1881, provide a record of the Australian environment rarely presented by artists at that time. In the words of her mentor Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, director of Kew Gardens, North’s objective was to capture landscapes that were ‘doomed shortly to disappear before the axe and the forest fires, the plough and the flock, or the ever advancing settler or colonist’. In addition to her paintings, North wrote books recollecting her travels, in which she presented her observations and explained the relevance of her paintings, within the principles of a ‘Darwinian vision,’ and inevitable and rapid environmental change. By examining her paintings and writings together, North’s works provide a documented narrative of the state of the Australian environment in the late nineteenth- century, filtered through the themes of personal botanical discovery, colonial expansion and British imperialism. Austrian and Scots pines are preferred hosts of Zimmerman pine moth. However Eastern white and mugo pines are also attacked. Symptoms of Zimmerman pine moth. Larvae are generally dirty white to light grey and up to one inch long. They can only be found in pitch masses, under bark or in new shoots. Symptoms and Effects: Zimmerman pine moth larvae tunnel into new growth causing shoot dieback, or into whorl areas causing masses of pitch to form at the wound site. Repeated attacks by the larvae cause a weakening at the area of the infestation and make the branches and trunk susceptible to breakage. Life Cycle: Zimmerman pine moth has a one-year life cycle and spends the winter as a young caterpillar underneath bark scales of infested trees. In mid to late April, larvae become active and they migrate to the base of branches or shoots and burrow inside. Larvae continue to feed into July and then pupate within a chamber in a mass of pitch. -
