However, there is little or no work on cardiac anatomy in Indigenous dog breeds of Tamil Nadu such as Rajapalayam. Rajapalayam dog Vertebral heart which is a unique medium-sized, sight hound breed of Rajapalayam region in the score, Indigenous dog, Rajapalayam, Virudhunagar district of southern Tamil Nadu. In the present study, Vertebral heart score Heart, Radiography (VHS) was measured by thoracic radiographs of left and right lateral recumbency. A total of 12 dogs (young -6 and adult-6) were used for the study. The mean VHS on right lateral Article Info radiographs was found to be 9.07 and 9.08 vertebrae in young and adult dogs respectively. Accepted: Whereas, the mean VHS on left lateral radiographs was found to be 9.10 and 9.08 10 January 2019 vertebrae in young and adult dogs respectively. -

Reproductive efficiency was measured in terms of birth weight of puppies, liter size and neonatal mortality. The overall mean birth weight of Mudhol Hound puppies was determined as 458 ± 0.18 g and ranged between 415 to 479 g which was similar to the birth weight reported for medium sized dogs. The male puppies in both the groups were weighed significantly higher (479.11 ± 3.44 g vs. 437.00 ± 5.47; 450.11± 3.44 vs. 415.00 ± 4.47) than new born female puppies. The pups from dogs maintained on homemade diet had significantly lower birth weight with significantly (p<0.05) higher prevalence of neonatal mortality (7.24% vs.15.79%) compared to scientific feeding system. -

Sathiyabarathi Assistant Professor, Department of Livestock Production Management Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli - 627 358 Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Tamil Nadu - India E-mail: [email protected] (*Corresponding Author) Abstract: A study was carried out to document the production performances of goats in Southern agro-climatic region of Tamil Nadu. Goat farmers from Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar were selected for this study. Based on the management practices followed by goat farmers the performances in terms of body weight have been observed. Highly significant difference (P< 0.01) was observed in 3, 9, 12 months body weight (kg) of goats in three districts. Highly significant difference (P< 0.01) was observed between the breeds (Kanni adu, Kodi adu and non-descript goats) in their body weight (kg) at birth, 3 months and 6 months. Non - descript breeds of goats at 4 teeth, 6 teeth and full mouth stage had significant difference in body weight (P< 0.01). Sex wise differences (P< 0.01) for goats in body weights at birth and 3 months were observed under extensive system of management, whereas under semi-intensive system a significant difference (P< 0.01) was observed in body weight at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Within the system adult males, young males and young females differed significantly (P<0.05) and there was a highly significant association observed between adult females (P<0.01) in the herds. -

INDIGENOUS LOP EARED SIGHTHOUNDS FROM CENTRAL AFRICA TO CHINA By Dr. Dominique de Caprona © de Caprona 2011 These breeds have evolved during centuries in very different geographical, social and cultural contexts. Their superficial resemblance does not in any way imply a common origin. The short haired individuals of a breed do not have the same DNA as the short haired individuals of another breed. On the contrary, the short haired individuals of a breed which exists with long hair, have the same DNA as the long haired individuals of that breed. Genetic research shows already that the most stable and ancient parts of the DNA are different for some of these breeds, indicating a different origin thousands of years ago. Example: Sloughi of the Maghreb and Saluki. The preservation of these indigenous breeds will therefore have to be carried out locally without the addition of foreign blood which ever it might be. A 1. and Srikrishna Isloor2 Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, Bangalore Received: 09 October 2015; Accepted: 14 March 2016 ABSTRACT The present study was undertaken to evaluate and compare the efficacy of Enrofloxacin and Enrofloxacin with Ampicillin sulbactam, in treatment of Subclinical mastitis (SCM). Eighteen animals with SCM, randomly divided into three treatment groups each comprised of 6 cows - Group I (control group), Group II (Enrofloxacin @ 5 mg/Kg body weight Intramsucular) and Group III (Enrofloxacin @ 5 mg/Kg body weight with ampicillin-sulbactam @ 10 mg /Kg body weight. Treatment was offered for 5 days. Somatic Cell Count(SCC) in milk was done on zero, 4 th , 8 th , 15 th , 30 th , 45 th , 60 th , 75 th , 90 th , 105 th and 120 th day post treatment to assess the response to the treatment. Statistical analysis of mean SCC from 4 th to 120 th day post treatment within each treatment group revealed significant decrease (P ≤ 0.05) from the zero day value. Further mean SCC in Group II and Enrofloxacin + Ampicillin Sulbactam(Group III) resulted in less than 5 Lakh/ml upto 30 th day and 90 th day post treatment respectively. It was concluded that Enrofloxacin with Ampicillin sulbactam is more efficacious and has a prolonged therapeutic effect over Enrofloxacin alone, in treatment of SCM in dairy cows. The main breeding tract of this dog is Tirunelveli district of southern Tamil Nadu. The features are black and white / brown coat, black nostrils, black eyes, broad chest and tucked up abdomen. The overall means of body length, height at withers, chest girth, belly girth, ear length and tail length in adults were 60.28 ± 1.10, 59.86 ± 0.93, 59.38 ± 1.00, 38.95 ± 0.57, 10.88 ± 0.15 and 39.20 ± 0.63 cm respectively. Sex had no significant effect on body length, height at withers and chest girth. This study shows that Kanni dog breed is a medium-sized indigenous sight hound dog of Tamil Nadu requiring conservation measures.
