Francis Poulenc was a French composer and pianist who, along the other members of Les Sixsought to liberate French classical music from foreign influence. Following several successful premieres, Poulenc studied composition with Charles Koechlin. Poulenc divided most of his life between concertizing in Paris and retreating to compose in rural Noizay. He gave his first concert tour through the United States in and continued to return regularly through The Coolidge Foundation contacted Poulenc in and offered him a commission for a piece of chamber music. The sonata was commissioned by the American Library of Congress and is dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Sprague Coolidgean American patron of chamber music. Poulenc preferred composing for woodwinds above strings.
