  • Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94 by Sergey Prokofiev
SONATA FOR FLUTE AND PIANO IN D MAJOR, OP. 94 BY SERGEY PROKOFIEV: A PERFORMANCE GUIDE HONORS THESIS Presented to the Honors Committee of Texas State University-San Marcos in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation in the Honors ColLege by Danielle Emily Stevens San Marcos, Texas May 2014 1 SONATA FOR FLUTE AND PIANO IN D MAJOR, OP. 94 BY SERGEY PROKOFIEV: A PERFORMANCE GUIDE Thesis Supervisor: ________________________________ Kay Lipton, Ph.D. School of Music Second Reader: __________________________________ Adah Toland Jones, D. GaLLoway, Ph.D. Dean, Honors ColLege 2 Abstract This thesis contains a performance guide for Sergey Prokofiev’s Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94 (1943). Prokofiev is among the most important Russian composers of the twentieth century. Recognized as a leading Neoclassicist, his bold innovations in harmony and his new palette of tone colors enliven the classical structures he embraced. This is especially evident in this flute sonata, which provides a microcosm of Prokofiev’s compositional style and highlights the beauty and virtuosic breadth of the flute in new ways. In Part 1 I have constructed an historical context for the sonata, with biographical information about Prokofiev, which includes anecdotes about his personality and behavior, and a discussion of the sonata’s commission and subsequent premiere. In Part 2 I offer an anaLysis of the piece with generaL performance suggestions and specific performance practice options for flutists that will assist them as they work toward an effective performance, one that is based on both the historically informed performance context, as well as remarks that focus on particular techniques, challenges and possible performance solutions.

chamber music with a modernist edge. His Piano Sonata (1938) reflected his Leonard Bernstein ties to Copland, with links also to the music of Hindemith and Stravinsky, and his Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (1942) was similarly grounded in a neoclassical aesthetic. The composer Paul Bowles praised the clarinet sonata as having a "tender, sharp, singing quality," as being "alive, tough, integrated." It was a prescient assessment, which ultimately applied to Bernstein’s music in all genres. Bernstein’s professional breakthrough came with exceptional force and visibility, establishing him as a stunning new talent. In 1943, at age twenty-five, he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic, replacing Bruno Walter at the last minute and inspiring a front-page story in the New York Times. In rapid succession, Bernstein Leonard Bernstein photo © Susech Batah, Berlin (DG) produced a major series of compositions, some drawing on his own Jewish heritage, as in his Symphony No. 1, "Jeremiah," which had its first Leonard Bernstein—celebrated as one of the most influential musicians of the performance with the composer conducting the Pittsburgh Symphony in 20th century—ushered in an era of major cultural and technological transition. January 1944. "Lamentation," its final movement, features a mezzo-soprano He led the way in advocating an open attitude about what constituted "good" delivering Hebrew texts from the Book of Lamentations. In April of that year, music, actively bridging the gap between classical music, Broadway musicals, Bernstein’s Fancy Free was unveiled by Ballet Theatre, with choreography by jazz, and rock, and he seized new media for its potential to reach diverse the young Jerome Robbins.

Pacific 231 (Symphonic Movement No. 1) Arthur Honegger (1892–1955) Written: 1923 Movements: One Style: Contemporary Duration: Six minutes As a young man trying to figure his way in the world of music, Miklós Rózsa (a Hollywood film composer) asked the French composer Arthur Honegger “How are we composers expected to make a living?” “Film music,” he said. “What?” I asked incredulously. I was unable to believe that Arthur Honegger, the composer of King David, Judith and other great symphonic frescos, of symphonic poems and chamber music, could write music for films. I was thinking of the musicals I had seen in Germany and of films like The Blue Angel, so I asked him if he meant foxtrots and popular songs. He laughed again. “Nothing like that,” he said, ‘I write serious music.’ As a young man, Honegger was part of a group of renegade composers in Paris grouped around the avant-garde poet Jean Cocteau called “Les Six.” Unlike, the other composers in “Les Six,” Honegger’s music is weightier and less flippant. In the 1920s, Honegger worked on three short orchestral pieces that he called Mouvements symphonique. In his autobiography, I am a Composer, he recounts his intent with the first: To tell the truth, In Pacific I was on the trail of a very abstract and quite ideal concept, by giving the impression of a mathematical acceleration of rhythm, while the movement itself slowed. It was only after he wrote the work that he gave it the title. “A rather romantic idea crossed my mind, and when the work was finished, I wrote the title, Pacific 231, which indicates a locomotive for heavy loads and high speed.” Given a title, people heard things that weren’t there.

Bohuslav grew up in a family without material wealth. He began violin at a young age and excelled quickly. The town was impressed by his talent when attending his recitals, and raised the funds to send him to the Prague Conservatory in 1906. Martinu was expelled from the Prague conservatory in 1910 due to "incorrigible negligence." Martinu became more interested in the composition aspect of music than his individual performance, and as such did not practice his violin enough. First Sonata for Flute and Piano was composed in 1945 in South Orleans, Cape Cod. During this time, Marinu was living in the United States to escape France when it was occupied by the Nazis in WW2. Though he didn't speak english very well, Martinu quickly adapted to his environment and ended up teaching both at Princeton and the Tanglewood institution in Berkshire. First Sonata was written for Georges Laurent, the principle flutist of the Boston Symphony. It premiered in New York 1949. Remnants ofMartinu's past can be heard throughout the sonata, such as the perfect fourths in the first movement that represent the church bells his father rang.

  • Memorandum LIBRARY of CONGRESS
UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT Memorandum LIBRARY OF CONGRESS 5JSC/LC/12 TO: Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA DATE: February 6, 2008 FROM: Barbara B. Tillett, LC Representative SUBJECT: Proposed revision of RDA chap. 6, Additional instructions for musical works and expressions The Library of Congress is submitting rule revision proposals for the RDA December 2007 draft chapter 6 instructions for musical works and expressions. Goals of proposals 1. To maintain the additional instructions for music intact (although LC recommends integrating them with the general instructions after the first release of RDA). 2. To fill in gaps in the AACR2 rules carried over into RDA by a. Incorporating selected AACR2 rule revisions; b. Adding instructions that clarify, make explicit, or expand some principles and instructions carried over from AACR2; c. Proposing new instructions. 3. To simplify some unnecessarily complex instructions. 4. To arrange certain subsections in the six major instructions in a more logical way, based wherever possible on principles that group together types of resources having common characteristics. 5. To revise the instructions for medium of performance to provide for all media found in resources and to do that using vocabulary that adheres as closely as possible to the principle of representation: incorporating words the composer or resource uses. 6. To revise or eliminate instructions LC finds unworkable based on past experience with AACR2 (e.g., the instructions for key (6.22) in section M of this document). 7. In the interest of simplification, to eliminate vexing terms catalogers have spent inordinate amounts of time interpreting when using AACR2 (e.g., “type of composition” as a formal term when all it need be is a useful phrase; “score order”).

Anahtar Kelimeler: Çağdaş Dönem, Flüt sonatı, Francis Poulenc Abstract: Francis Poulenc, one of the names that comes to mind when it comes to contemporary music, enriched the repertoire of wind instruments. The composer, who not only works with piano accompaniment but also works in the field of chamber music, reflected the characteristics of the period to her music. At the same time, the composer, who uses his own melodic structures in his works, has taken his place among the well-known names in classical music.
