Big Wheel will, I hope remember this. A long time ago we were both serving in the RAF but not together because he joined and was demobbed while I was still at school! In those dim and distant days, we would have attended the weekly pay parade, outdoors or in a hanger if the weather was inclement. Although we were glad to put some money in our pockets, what we didn’t like was to have to wait for it because the dosh was always dished alphabetically. Not much fun when there were 150 on parade. Well, as I am writing the report this week, readers will note that I have taken a liberty …

Out of the fourteen persons gathering at the Molescroft Inn roundabout one recycler piped up to say ‘Let’s do this ride in reverse’. And I for one was grateful not for the reasons given above but for the fresh perspective of a different set of views along a frequently cycled route. Parts of the ride were of course travelled regularly in both directions but this is necessary if we are to maintain safety by using quiet roads where we can.

Today was cold, lowest at 2.8°C and a brief maximum of 5.2° but for most of the ride it was about 4°C. Having said that, I think we were generally contented with perhaps just a little discomfort at the extremities. If however the day had been windy as opposed to the gentle breeze we experienced then discomfort would be an understatement. It can be seen from Dave’s (almost) sepia photo that at TJ’s coffee shop we are all relaxed and enjoying an early lunch – as opposed to clambering tightknit around the log burner.

In reliving the ride last week I recall comments being made about it being someone else’s turn to make contact with the South Dalton duck pond and remembering Bob Watson rescuing his bike on one occasion. Although us non- residents will naturally call it a duck pond, for some reason it is actually called The Mere. See

Google Map at the end of this report.

It is interesting to note here (and for the future perhaps) that this very day TJ’s was about to close for refurbishment - with plans to reopen in March. In the interim there will be a temporary coffee shop but without the cooking facilities. Please see here a couple of recyclers enjoying a wholsome lunch and wondering if they could manage the in an afternoon and still be home in time for tea..

On the way home we passed another well known landmark at a place that I will henceforth refer to as ‘Burnbutts Corner’. The road running north and east from this spot being known as Burnbutts Lane. From Burnbutts Corner we made our way back to Beverley in a number of pelotons ranging in size from two to eight but grouping together at the turn off from Bracken Lane to The Mere and again outside the Light Dragoon at Etton.

Many of us were looking forward to some light refreshment and gentle banter at Saint Michael and All Angels in Cherry Burton but were disappointed. The café was closed, probably for seasonal reasons.

Note to self: Must speak to George Sweeting about this to make sure it never happens again.

Please note that a Dropbox folder called Beverley U3A Cycling Group contains a lot of photos (and a few movies) not included in the reports. Dave has made this resource available to 32 members. Please get in touch if you need help with access.
