Shonda Rhimes
YEAR OF How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person SHONDA RHIMES READING GROUP GUIDE INTRODUCTION With three hit shows on television and three children at home, the uber-talented Shonda Rhimes had lots of good reasons to say NO when an unexpected invitation arrived. Hollywood party? No. Speaking engagement? No. Media appearances? No. And there was the side benefit of saying No for an introvert like Shonda: nothing new to fear. Then Shonda’s sister dropped a grenade on Shonda’s seemingly safe, happy life: “You never say yes to anything.” These words stuck in Shonda’s brain and prompted her to challenge herself: for one year, say yes to everything. Say YES to the unexpected invitations that come your way. Say YES to the things that scare you. Shonda reluctantly set out—and the results of her hard-won, yearlong journey are nothing short of transformative. In Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes chronicles the powerful impact saying yes had on every aspect of her life—and how we can all change our lives with the power of YES. This reading group guide for Year of Yes includes an introduction, discussion questions, and ideas for enhancing your book club. The suggested questions are intended to help your reading group find new and interesting angles and topics for your discussion. We hope that these ideas will enrich your conversation and increase your enjoyment of the book. yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes QUESTIONS & TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION 1. Shonda Rhimes has spent her entire life “making stuff up” and was lucky enough to make a career doing something she loves that comes naturally to her: writing fiction. -

Gender in Black and White: Examining Interracial Relationships in ShondaLand By Caitlin Downing Prepared for Dr. Esch English Department Salve Regina University May 8, 2017 Downing 1 Gender in Black and White: Examining Interracial Relationships in ShondaLand ABSTRACT: Shonda Rhimes has been credited for crafting progressive television dramas that attract millions of viewers. Scholars have found that through the use of tactics like colorblind casting, Rhimes unintentionally creates problematic relationships between characters. Focusing on production techniques and dialogue, this paper examines episodes from two of her most popular shows, How To Get Away With Murder and Scandal. This paper argues that while the shows pursue progressive material, the shows present African-American female characters that require partners. Further, both white male characters negatively influence the women’s independence. -

BRIDGERTON SERIES AS A PARADIGM OF FEMINIST CO-CREATION OF THE TELEVISION AUDIENCE Graciela Padilla-Castillo, Aysel Zeynalova, Asunción Bernárdez-Rodal Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] INTRODUCTION Bridgerton is a television series created by Chris Van Dusen, produced by Chris Van Dusen, Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes. Its first season premiered worldwide on 25 December 2020 on Netflix. The first season has eight episodes, as is the norm for all Netflix series, and a second season is already confirmed thanks to the fact that it racked up 82 million views in the first month of its premiere (Zorrilla, 2021). If it follows the structure of the collection of novels written by Julia Quinn, from which the original idea stems, the series could have up to 8 seasons, as there are 8 different books, each centred on the 8 Bridgerton children. The action takes place in London, around 1810, among the high society parties. It begins with the presentation of the young brides to the Queen of England and the appearance of a gossip bulletin, signed by an anonymous author: Lady Whistledown. The plot, which at first sight does not seem very original, is adapted to our reality, offering original and necessary touches that form the basis of this investigation. On-screen, Shonda Rhimes innovates once again with a choral and multiracial cast, which she has previously imposed on all her series and which made her stand out especially from the first season of Grey's Anatomy onwards. Rhimes proposes blind casting so that actors and actresses are not chosen on the basis of physical characteristics imposed by the script. -

Annalise Keating's Portrayal As a Black Attorney Is the Real Scandal
UCLA National Black Law Journal Title Annalise Keating's Portrayal as a Black Attorney is the Real Scandal: Examining How the Use of Stereotypical Depictions of Black Women can Lead to the Formation of Implicit Biases Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/6wd3d4gk Journal National Black Law Journal, 27(1) ISSN 0896-0194 Author Toms-Anthony, Shamar Publication Date 2018 Peer reviewed eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California ANNALISE KEATING’S PORTRAYAL AS A BLACK ATTORNEY IS THE REAL SCANDAL: Examining How the Use of Stereotypical Depictions of Black Women Can Lead to the Formation of Implicit Biases Shamar Toms-Anthony* Abstract Law firms are struggling to increase the representation and retention of Black women, and Black women have reported feeling excluded, invisible, and a lack of support within law firms. In this Comment, I posit that ABC’s hit show “How to Get Away with Murder” over relies on traditional negative stereotypes about Black women. Annalise Keating, the show’s lead character, conforms to the stereotypes of the Jezebel, the Mammy, and the Angry Black Woman. Fur- ther, Keating’s representation as a Black female attorney is uniquely significant because historically Black women have done very little lawyering on the television screen. Thus, Keating’s representation as a Black female attorney on a show that has garnered upwards of twenty million viewers in a single episode is extremely influential, as it can have the effect of shaping audiences’ perceptions about Black women in the legal profession. As a result, I argue that the show’s negative depic- tion of Keating as a Black female attorney can lead to the formation of implicit biases about Black female attorneys, and may contribute to why Black women are having a difficult time excelling in law firms, which are 92.75 percent White. -

Applying a Rhizomatic Lens to Television Genres
A THOUSAND TV SHOWS: APPLYING A RHIZOMATIC LENS TO TELEVISION GENRES _______________________________________ A Dissertation presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School at the University of Missouri-Columbia _______________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy _____________________________________________________ by NETTIE BROCK Dr. Ben Warner, Dissertation Supervisor May 2018 The undersigned, appointed by the dean of the Graduate School, have examined the Dissertation entitled A Thousand TV Shows: Applying A Rhizomatic Lens To Television Genres presented by Nettie Brock A candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy And hereby certify that, in their opinion, it is worthy of acceptance. ________________________________________________________ Ben Warner ________________________________________________________ Elizabeth Behm-Morawitz ________________________________________________________ Stephen Klien ________________________________________________________ Cristina Mislan ________________________________________________________ Julie Elman ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Someone recently asked me what High School Nettie would think about having written a 300+ page document about television shows. I responded quite honestly: “High School Nettie wouldn’t have been surprised. She knew where we were heading.” She absolutely did. I have always been pretty sure I would end up with an advanced degree and I have always known what that would involve. The only question was one of how I was going to get here, but my favorite thing has always been watching television and movies. Once I learned that a job existed where I could watch television and, more or less, get paid for it, I threw myself wholeheartedly into pursuing that job. I get to watch television and talk to other people about it. That’s simply heaven for me. A lot of people helped me get here. -
