We are drawing to the end of another year of our popular monthly run/walk and throwing handicap programs. Immediately following both of these November events their annual trophies will be presented. Most of these trophies now have a long and fascinating history. Please stay around after you have completed your event to socialise, reflect on your efforts throughout the year and honour those who have earned the awards.

Mullins Trophy

Pat Mullins donated trophies to runners finishing closest to the 50th percentile as a fitting way to remember husband Reg, for although he was a talented long distance runner he rarely finished better than mid-field in most of his seventy- five handicap runs.

Encouragement Award

This is one of our three most prestigious club-person awards, (others being the Clohessy and Johnson Trophies for service and participation in the monthly throwing handicaps and track and field respectively). This award was proposed and donated by life member Mike Adler in 1980. Over time its criterion has gradually changed to honour “a member who has contributed to the success of the run/walk handicap program s well as benefitting through their own participation.”

On 24 April 2010 Greg Stretton married Karen Fogarty [another vet who competes only rarely]. Whilst the photographer was taking photos on Tathra beach the familiar figure of Roger Stewart emerged from the deep with an unknown mate who insisted on joining in for the attached photo.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Narelle, I wish to correct an error in the report on the CT Fun Run in the "Canberra Times". I was not the oldest male to finish this year. That distinction goes to our Rad Leovic and I congratulate him on his effort. After being the oldest finisher in 2009 my thought was "Where are our keen 80+ members?" I'm delighted that Rad answered my question at last. Good on ya' Rad.

Bryan Thomas is in the final stages of completing the History of Australian Masters Athletics and has recommended that suitable photographs be sourced to include in the publication. If your club has actual photographs from the various eras for the athletes and administrators listed below, could you please forward them to Lynne Schickert who is coordinating the collection of this material. It would be preferable to mail them on a CD if you have a number of them. Otherwise single photographs could be emailed.

Postal address: 11A Dandenong Road, Attadale, 6156 Email: [email protected]

Jack Pennington and John Gilmour are able to provide some photos of the early days and a number of photos used in the AMA Handbook are also available for the latter chapters. Photographs of individuals should be ‘action’, ie running, jumping, throwing etc or if administrators at a desk, meeting or officiating etc.

Thanks, your assistance would be appreciated and where possible, photo sources will be acknowledged.

Follow the car- park road fence line to Weston Park Rd, then follow the Weston Park road fence line to the beach at the end of the penin- sula. Turn left and follow the track near the lake edge for about 300m, then bear left on a track up the hill. Continue in this direction to the road and follow the fence line West to the barbecue, and turn South following the line of the Gum Trees which curves right to join a gravel path around the pond. Follow the path around the pond to the lake edge where it turns South West. The Short course Turn (1.75K) is about 40m beyond this point. The Short course returns to the start over the same track. (Course distance 3.5K) The Long course continues along the lake edge to the end of the gravel path and then bears left away from the lake to a gravel path which heads East. At the end of this path turn right and then right again at the next gravel path which runs West. Follow this path which leads to the Nursery fence and turn left at the fence corner. Then follow the track which leads to the Nursery Car Park. The long course turn is about 20m before the Car Park road. The long course returns to the start over the same track. (Course distance 7.0K)
