Unfortunately, these were not tears of joy. The previous winter in Seattle, the fourteen- year-old youth had been stricken by rheumatic fever, which left him with a permanently damaged heart. Knowing he would not survive another harsh northern winter, his doctors recommended moving to a warmer climate. When his mother asked him where he would like to live, he chose San Diego because it was close to Mexico. In his fertile imagination, he pictured the pyramids of the Aztecs and the temples of the Maya. Needless to say, San Diego in 1916 could not compare with the lush greenery of Seattle or the mysterious jungles of Mexico. It wasn't long, however, before Hord came to love the region, and the arid southwest became the inspiration for many of his sculptures. He was the product of an unhappy marriage; the future artist's parents divorced when he was still a child, his mother taking him eventually to Seattle. At an early age, he developed an interest in ancient cultures, particularly those of the Orient and the Americas. Being an invalid for much of his youth, he was not able to attend regular school. Instead, he spent time at the library, educating himself in a wide variety of subjects including history, literature, music and art. -

And they said to him, "But play, you must, A tune beyond us, yet ourselves, A tune upon the blue guitar, Of things exactly as they are." “Man With the Blue Guitar” by Wallace Stevens The San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park had its beginnings in the Panama-California Exposition of 1915-16. At that time Dr. Edgar L. Hewett was director of exhibits for buildings in the California Quadrangle and the Indian Arts and the Science and Education Buildings to the west of the Quadrangle. Dr. Hewett’s efforts to furnish these buildings evolved into a plan to create an omnibus civic museum for San Diego similar to the museum in Santa Fe that Dr. Hewett headed.(1) Alice Klauber, a San Diego artist who had been a student of Robert Henri, invited her teacher to visit La Jolla in the summer of 1914. Encouraged by Klauber, Henri arranged for an exhibition of paintings by American artists George Bellows, Guy Pene Du Bois, William Glackens, Childe Hassam, Ernest Lawson, George Luks, Maurice B. Prendergast, Joseph Henry Sharp, John Sloan, and Art Springhorn at the upcoming Panama-California Exposition.(2) These painters were Realists from the “Ash Can Group,” who painted grim and gritty pictures of city life or Impressionists who painted joyful and spontaneous pictures of people and of nature.(3) The paintings were mounted on the interior walls of the Fine Arts Building, a California mission-style building designed by New York architect Bertram Goodhue on the south side of the California Quadrangle. -
Ancient Mexico in United States Art and Visual Culture, 1933-1945
ABSTRACT Title of Document: FORGING A NEW WORLD NATIONALISM: ANCIENT MEXICO IN UNITED STATES ART AND VISUAL CULTURE, 1933-1945 Breanne Robertson, Doctor of Philosophy, 2012 Directed By: Associate Professor Renée Ater, Department of Art History and Archaeology Professor Sally M. Promey, Department of American Studies, Yale University, formerly Department of Art History and Archaeology, University of Maryland Between 1933 and 1945, Americans redefined their cultural identity within a hemispheric context and turned toward Mexican antiquity to invent a non-European national mythos. This reconfiguration of ancient Mexican history and culture coincided with changes in U.S. foreign policy regarding Latin American nations. In his inaugural address on March 4, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt launched the Good Neighbor Policy, hoping to build an international alliance with Latin American countries that would safeguard the Western hemisphere from the political and economic crises in Europe. As part of these efforts, the government celebrated Mesoamerican civilization as evidence of a great hemispheric heritage belonging also to United States citizens. These historical circumstances altered earlier American views of ancient Mexico as simultaneously a preindustrial paradise of noble savages and an uncivilized site of idolatry, revolution, and human sacrifice. My dissertation examines this official reinterpretation of American past and present reality under the Good Neighbor Policy. Specifically, I consider the portrayal of ancient Mexico in United States art as a symbol of pan-American identity in order to map the ideological contours of U.S. diplomacy and race relations. The chapters of the dissertation present a series of case studies, each devoted to a different facet of the international discourse of U.S.-led pan-Americanism as it was internally conceived and domestically disseminated. -

SAN DIEGO’S ETERNAL SUNSHINE Landscape icons abound in the host city of asLa’s 2011 annuaL Meeting and expo. By Daniel Jost, ASLA Watch the Weather on KUSI San Diego and you’ll hear four different forecasts—as I write it’s sunny and 86 degrees in the desert, 74 and fair in the inland valleys, 62 and misty along the coast, and 44 and breezy in the mountains. Within an hour of downtown, you’ll find beaches overtaken by sea lions, scrubby hillsides covered in wildflowers, windblown pines, and colorful desert formations. San Diego has a range of interesting designed land- scapes as well. It has world-famous zoos and golf courses. The University of California, San Diego, has one of the best collections of contextual art anywhere, and nearby is Louis Kahn’s iconic Salk Institute with its runnel that seems to flow to the sea. When people think about Southern California, they often think about sprawl, and San Diego has plenty of that. The easiest way to get around is by car, but many parts of the city are walkable and bikable. · BALBOA PARK· CENTRAL MESA PRECISE PLAN Analysis - Architecture ARCmTECTURE ANALYSIS Analysis of the architecture of the Central Mesa involved historical research, documentation of the condition of existing buildings and evaluation of projected facilities requirements. Historical research emphasized buildings and architectural features listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Architectural design themes, styles, dates of construction, and significant features were documented. Results of this research can be found in the historic context and architectural recommendations sections. Figure 20 is the Existing Architecture History map which identifies the existing buildings originally constructed for the expositions and the date of construction for non-exposition buildings. The condition of existing architecture was assessed by surveying organizations that lease building space, by conducting field observations and by interviewing Park management and maintenance staff. Future use analysis was conducted by distributing a questionnaire to the institutions and organizations leasing facilities on the Central Mesa. Information regarding existing conditions of buildings, future facilities needs, and the feasibility of locating some facilities or functions outside the Park was collected. Among the needs expressed in response to the questionnaire was the desire of some organizations and institutions to expand the size of their leased facilities in order to accommodate projected uses over the next twenty years. An evaluation of potential impacts such as historic character, visual quality, circulation, parking, existing topography and vegetation was conducted for each proposed building modification. The proposals were also evaluated to determine their conformance to the Master Plan. In addition, the potential for off-site use was evaluated and discussed with organizations whose expansion plans might have significant impacts on the Park environment. -
