Japan's Suicide Forest
Cold Open: An alarming number of Japanese citizens have taken a dark pilgrimage to the Aokigahara (“Ah-oakee-gah-hara”) forest, more commonly known as Japan’s suicide forest, to end their lives, most commonly by hanging themselves from tree branches followed by taking an overdose of sleeping pills. An untold number have wandered in and have never wandered out. Beginning in the 1960s, between approximately ten and thirty people each year spent their last living moments in this forest at the base of Mt. Fuji. And the number of annual suicides has greatly increased recently. In 2003, 105 bodies were discovered. Comprehensive data on lives lost in the forest doesn’t seem to have been released since 2003, which is not a good sign. Why here? Why is a small patch of serene forest the second most popular suicide destination in the world, thought to trail only the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco? More than 1,500 people have jumped off that bridge and died since construction was completed in 1937. So many that the government has decided to build the world’s most expensive safety net. A stainless steel net, located about 20 feet below the bridge’s sidewalk, will span 1.7 miles of roadway on each side of the bridge and extend twenty feet out over the water. It’s gonna take four years to construct and will cost just over $200 million. It should be finished by 2021. And while that net will certainly make it a Hell of a lot harder for people to throw themselves off that bridge, how do you stop people from taking their lives in a thirty-square kilometer patch of forest? You can’t put a net under every tree. -
The Reliquaries of Hyrule: a Semiotic and Iconographic Analysis of Sacred Architecture Within Ocarina of Time
Press Start The Reliquaries of Hyrule The Reliquaries of Hyrule: A Semiotic and Iconographic Analysis of Sacred Architecture Within Ocarina of Time Jared Hansen University of Oregon Abstract This study is a semiotic and iconographic analysis of the sacred architecture in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo, 1998). Through an analysis of the visual elements of the game, the researcher found evidence of visual metaphors that coded three temples as sacred spaces. This coding of the temples is accomplished through the symbolism of progression that matches the design of shrines and cathedrals, drawing on iconography and other symbolism associated with Shinto, Buddhist, and Christian sacred architecture. Such indications of sacred spaces highlight the ways in which these virtual environments are designed to symbolize the progression of the player from secular to sacred, much like the player’s progression from zero to hero. By using the architecture and symbolism of the three aforementioned belief systems, Ocarina of Time signifies these temples as reliquaries—that is, sacred places that house reverential items as part of the apotheosis of the player. Ltd., Japan (e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract: National highway No.135 is a main road that supports the regional economy and sightseeing spots in Izu Peninsula. Atami is a busy city and leading resort with many hotels and resort apartment buildings, attracting more than 8 million visitors every year. In late 2003/early 2004, warning phenomena appeared just before a landslide destroyed a slope along the highway. The road office administrators were concerned that the community would be seriously paralyzed if the landslide intercepted traffic and caused hotels and buildings to collapse. There had been several small landslides at the bottom of the slope in August and September, causing traffic jams and the successive rupture of water service pipes buried alongside the road. However, the administrators did not realize that the series of phenomena were caused by landslides. Two months later in November, a water service pipe ruptured again, and the road office finally investigated the slope. This time, a landslide scarp and cracks were found on the slope, and the administrators realized that the series of small August/September phenomena had been caused by a landslide 75 m long and 75 m wide. Monitoring of landslide activity by extensometers was quickly started, by which time the slide velocity had accelerated to more than 5 mm/day. On December 6, the sliding velocity reached 24.8 mm/day, and a landslide was predicted to occur at noon on January 5. -

Keller Kimbrough Tourists in Paradise Writing the Pure Land in Medieval Japanese Fiction Late-medieval Japanese fiction contains numerous accounts of lay and monastic travelers to the Pure Land and other extra-human realms. In many cases, the “tourists” are granted guided tours, after which they are returned to the mun- dane world in order to tell of their unusual experiences. This article explores several of these stories from around the sixteenth century, including, most prominently, Fuji no hitoana sōshi, Tengu no dairi, and a section of Seiganji engi. I discuss the plots and conventions of these and other narratives, most of which appear to be based upon earlier oral tales employed in preaching and fund-raising, in order to illuminate their implications for our understanding of Pure Land-oriented Buddhism in late-medieval Japan. Andrei Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2016 © 2016 Talia J.Andrei All rights reserved Abstract Mapping Sacred Spaces: Representations of Pleasure and Worship in Sankei Mandara Talia J. Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively). -
